2. ROWER ELIGIBILITY, NUMBER OF EVENTS, LIGHTWEIGHT CREWS AND NOVICE CREWS:
General eligibility:
Competition is limited to rowers under the age of 19 who are currently
enrolled as students in the participating High School.
Violation of this rule will result in
disqualification of all boats in which the over-age rower participated.
Number of events: No rower may participate in more than two events; a semi-final and final race
in a given event is considered one event for purposes of this rule. Violation of this rule will result
in disqualification of all boats in which the rower participated. Coxswains are exempt from this
two-event limitation.
Lightweight crews:
For men’s lightweight events, no rower’s weight shall exceed 150 lbs.; for
women’s lightweight events, no rower’s weight shall exceed 130 lbs.; no weight limit is set for
coxswains.
There will be no weigh-ins for Lightweight Crews.
Protests regarding competitor
weights must be made to Race Officials within 30 minutes of the conclusion of the event.
Protests made outside that time period will not be allowed. A weigh-in scale will be on site in
the eventuality of a protest. If a rower exceeds the Lightweight event weight limit, the rower's
boat is disqualified.
Novice crews:
No rower in a novice boat shall have competed prior to the current scholastic
year. Violation of this rule will result in disqualification of all novice boats in which the rower
participated.
3. BOAT AND TRAILER STORAGE: Overnight storage is available in the Concordia College parking lot
where designated after 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 26, 2013. Neither Skyline Crew nor Concordia College
is responsible for equipment theft or vandalism.
4. COACHES/COXWAINS MEETING:
The meeting for coaches and coxswains will be inside the erg
shelter as noted on the site map. Time for the meeting will be published the week of the regatta.
5. COURSE: The course is a fully buoyed, three-lane course approximately 1400 meters in length on the
Huron River immediately west of U.S. 23 in Ann Arbor; it begins from staffed starting platforms located
approximately 200 meters east of the launch area and ends some 1200 meters west of the launch area
in Gallup Park. Course and site maps are included.
6. START: Directions for proceeding to the start and returning from the race will be announced at the
Coaches/Coxswains Meeting. Boats must be ready to leave the dock at specified launch times. Due to
the number of crews anticipated, quick launching is essential. Boats must arrive at the marshalling area
5 minutes before the event start.
7. EVENTS: Please see the Events List and Schedule in the Race Packet. Every effort will be made to
keep to the published times.
Entries may row only at the event-specified time.
Please contact the
Regatta Chair for extenuating circumstances. Gold medals only will be awarded to winning crews.
8. CLASSES: Racing classes are established by boat size (8+, 4+, etc.), gender of the boat’s rower(s),
and varsity, lightweight and novice ratings. Because our course is limited to three lanes, varsity and
novice classes are subdivided so that a team’s designated A or fastest boat will compete against the A
or fastest boats of other teams, B or second fastest boats will compete among themselves, and so on as
illustrated below. Exceptions may be made for sculling events, based on the number of entries received.
Any event with more than three entries will have semi-final heats and a final race, with the winner of
each semi-final and the boat with the next fastest time overall advancing to the final for that event.
Varsity I: A team’s fastest boat in the event.
Varsity II/Junior: A team’s second fastest boat in the event
Varsity III: A team’s third fastest boat in the event (will only be provided if need dictates)
Novice I: A team’s fastest boat in the event.
Novice II: A team’s second fastest boat in the event.
9. HOT SEATING: “Hot seating” is permitted, provided races are not delayed in doing so. All crews
enter at their own risk. Hot seat shells will be given priority docking when returning from a race when
multiple shells are awaiting recovery.
The coxswain or coach must alert the Dockmaster of hot seat
recovery. If a hot seat crew entering a just-recovered shell must change oars or make adjustments, the
rowers must wet hot seat. Launch of ready boats will not be delayed to accommodate a hot seating
shell. Crews waiting for rowers to return from a previous race must wait on land until the shell with the
returning rowers is near the recovery area.
10. CONDUCT DURING TRANSIT AND RACING; PENALTIES:
A. Racing boats shall remain in their lanes for the entire race.
B. Any racing boat crossing outside a buoy for its lane with any part of the hull of the boat will
be assessed a penalty of 10 seconds per crossing. Each boat must finish within its assigned lane
between the finish line buoys, and any boat finishing outside its assigned lane will be assessed a
20-second penalty.
C. Any boat which, without justification, interferes with the forward progress of another boat will
be assessed a 1-minute time penalty or be excluded, at the discretion of the officials.
D. After crossing the finish line, boats must continue rowing at a paddle to clear the lane.
E. Conduct unbecoming of a rower will result in the immediate disqualification of that rower’s
boat.
11. SITE PLAN/GENERAL INFORMATION: The site plan and course map are included in this packet
and will be reviewed at the Coaches/Coxswain Meeting. The regatta is on the Huron River adjacent to
the grounds of Concordia College and Gallup Park. Please respect the grounds and observe the NO
SMOKING policy.
The staging area for boats will on the lower lawn adjacent to the launch dock at
Concordia College. US Rowing Association Rules of Racing apply to all situations not covered.
The decisions of the Regatta Chair and Grand Marshal on any disputes shall be final.
