kulanu INDIANAPOLIS HEBREW CONGREGATION ALL of US IHC's mission...sustaining and building a progressive Jewish community through Torah, T'fila, and Tikkun Olam March 2015 • Adar/Nisan 5775 PURIM—SPECIAL EDITION Rabbi Mark Covitz CLERGY VOICE We all know that the terms “Jewish” and “Sports” are practically synonymous. Legendary are the tales of baseball greats Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax, who refused to play in important games on Yom Kippur. Once again, the worlds of Judaism and sports are on a collision course. Earlier this month, the NCAA Board of Governors announced that this year’s College Basketball Final Four in Indianapolis will be postponed one week out of respect for the festival of Passover, which falls on the first day of the tournament. This decision was made at the behest of our Jewish community leaders who expressed the concern that after ingesting four full glasses of Manischewitz at the previous night’s seder, local Jewish sports fans would not be in any shape to attend the games. It was further noted that Jewish fans who did attend the games would be unable to enjoy hot dog buns, pizza, nachos, or even a beer, due to traditional Passover dietary restrictions. Days later, the NCAA reversed that decision after backlash from CBS Sports, the network broadcasters of the tournament, who expressed fear that moving the Final Four too far into the month of April would hurt the events branding as “March Madness”. However, a statement out of the NCAA offices here in Indianapolis did recognize the need to make some concession, “out of respect for not only the great Jewish and Israeli players like Dolph Schayes and Gilad Katz, but especially for the great basketball figures for whom Passover means the most, like Moses Malone (who was the first player to ever Passover college and go straight to the NBA), God Shamgod (Providence), former Pacers coach Jack Rameses, legendary NBA coach Red Sea Auerbach, and Cleveland legend World B. Free.” And so, the games will be played, as scheduled, on Passover. But thanks to the sensitivity of the NCAA, the traditional orange basketball will be replaced with one painted to look like a matzah ball. Said former Duke and Maccabi Tel Aviv player Jon Scheyer, “I can’t think of anything better for dunking!” Now, you are likely to have two reactions to the above paragraphs: 1) That’s ridiculous; and 2) Why is this in our temple bulletin? In response, I would say: 1) Correct, it’s ridiculous; and 2) Because it’s Purim! While many Jewish holidays present us with a list of restrictions and obligations, Purim is a day of joy and celebration, a festival of foolishness. According to the passage from the Book of Esther, we are to feast joyfully (drink), send gifts to our friends, and give to the poor. We are not asked to abstain from any type of food; and the only service we attend is one filled with silliness, frivolity, costumes, songs, and noisemakers. Many temple bulletins feature clergy articles, or even entire bulletins, that are not to be taken seriously. I am always amazed at how easy it is to get Jewish adults to observe the somber holidays, and how challenging it is to convince them to celebrate one like this that requires little of us, only that we celebrate joyously. The fact is, Purim is not a children’s holiday. It is a holiday for adults to act like children. We observe so many holidays in a solemn manner, wouldn’t it be nice to observe one by simply revisiting our childhood sense of silliness. With all of the challenges in our nation and in the world right now, wouldn’t it be nice to set aside one day with nothing on our agendas save for being festive together, visiting our friends with baskets of goodies, and giving a little to those in need? Purim begins at sundown on March 4th. I encourage you to celebrate in your homes, or with friends. Get crazy. Wear costumes. Yes, it’s a weeknight. But, c’mon! It’s Purim! IHC’s megillah reading and Purim carnival will be on Sunday March 8th at 10 am. It’s in place of Religious School, but is not restricted to Religious School students. All should feel welcome to attend, to attend in costume, and to get loud. Who knows, maybe afterwards we’ll organize a march on NCAA headquarters. The service begins Sunday, March 22 at 3:00 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3243 North Meridian Street. JEWISH BOOK CLUB Tuesday, March 10, 2015 BRINGING BUBBE HOME by Debra Gordon Zaslow TEMPLE LIBRARY JEWISH BOOK CLUB—A special treat is in store for Jewish Book Club attendees on March 10 as we meet Debra Gordon Zaslow, author of Bringing Bubbe Home We will be meeting Debra electronically via Skype (thanks to Ron Herman for facilitating the setup). Debra is a professional storyteller and you will feel part of her emotional story of what occurred when she decided to bring her 103 year-old grandmother to live with her during the last months of Bubbe’s life. For details about the book and the meeting, contact the librarian. FROZEN??? READ JEWISH BOOKS—They’re THAWsome! is the theme of the 2015 Religious School-Temple Library sponsored reading incentive program. We have had great participation thus far and ask you to encourage students in Kindergarten through Seventh Grade to continue reading to earn credits for prizes, a certificate, and a pizza party. Most importantly they will further their Jewish and literacy skills. The program ends on April 19 so March is the last full month of borrowing books to read in order to complete the cards you need to participate. In addition to the pre-set times for Storytelling during the first session of Religious School, all students can come to the library before or after class to borrow books. Just ask any questions you have about the program—it’s our 22nd year and IHC students have read more than 7,000 books during this time! RETURN BOOKS—Just a gentle reminder that the quicker you return books to the library the more opportunity you give others to read them also. Let us know if you need to renew. WHAT’S NEW March includes the joyous holiday of Purim. Much has been written, both in adult and children’s literature, about the uniqueness of this holiday. Here is a brief sampling from the children’s section. Barnyard Purim, by Kelly Terwilliger, tells the humorous tale of farm animals acting out the story of Purim. But what happens when a real fox appears? Delightful illustrations by Barbara Johansen Newman complement this lighthearted, yet informative text. Here Come the Purim Players! is Barbara Cohen’s retelling of the holiday story that captures the spirit of the occasion in the long-ago Jewish community of Prague. Lusciously illustrated by Shoshana Mekibel, this 1998 edition of the original 1984 text remains a classic favorite. On Purim is one in a series of holiday books by Cathy Goldberg Fishman, illustrated by Melanie W. Hall. A young girl sings, “Oh, today we’ll merry, merry be,” as the 14th of Adar approaches and she makes her Purim mask. A lively and educational celebration of the holiday is portrayed in the words as well as the colorful illustrations. There is a Glossary at the end that includes a pronunciation guide. 3 IHC KULANU • MARCH 2015 Note: Conversation via Skype planned with author. Check with Librarian for minor changes in time and room number at IHC. LOOKING AHEAD Tuesday, April 14, 2015 THE GALLERY OF VANISHED HUSBANDS by Natasha Solomons Meetings at 12 noon at IHC in Room 206. Read the book. Bring your lunch. Join the group for a lively discussion. Contact Evelyn Pockrass, Librarian, for details at 255-6647, x217; [email protected]. Purim, written and illustrated by Miriam Nerlove, contains a wonderful introduction to the story and customs of the holiday and is presented in a manner that is easily understandable for pre-school and early elementary school youngsters. Told in rhyme, the author also provides a backpage about the holiday that adults will find helpful. Purim Goodies, written and illustrated by Amalia Hoffman, is bassed on a story by Sholem Aleichem. Two maidservants meet as they are bringing Purim goodies to each other’s families. What happens when the goodies are so tempting and do the girls get punished? This warm, caring story includes both a Glossary and a recipe for Hamantaschen. Enjoy your Purim celebration and keep visiting your Temple Library whenever the building is open. MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Message from the President: February was a very busy month for Sisterhood. Hamentashen baking was a weekend activity in January and February! Thank you to Tammy Falender and Judy Levy for their many hours of prep and organization If you have not ordered yet it’s not too late, there will be some bags for sale on March 8, after the Megillah reading and during the Purim Carnival. You do not want to miss out on these deliciously yummy treats!! Thank you also to all of the bakers, dough rollers, cutters and fillers. The kitchen is a lively place with all the women and young girls and boys who, while chatting away, work very diligently. Without you we could never have fulfilled our orders! On February 18th we had our first Lilith Salon. Bi-monthly we will be selecting articles from the Lilith magazine to read and discuss as a group. Thank you to Rosanne Marusa and Jenny Angel-Reese for their leadership and organizing the Lilith Salons. We also had our annual day of pampering at the Julian Center! Every year we provide a day when the women at the center can be pampered by having their hair, nails, and make up done by the volunteers from EVEDA. At the same time we provide snacks, a boutique (stocked with personal items, purses, clothes, and jewelry), and we entertain the children. The women at the Center truly appreciate having a day to be pampered!! Our Social Action committee does a wonderful job in making this happen. Thank you to Lisa Deremiah, Karen Schiffer and their committee and the volunteers. In March we are looking forward to our Women’s Seder and our weekly Torah study. We have a lot going on. We will discuss articles and issues included in the Lilith Magazine, which is a wonderful magazine for Reform Jewish women. Lilith magazine was first published in the 1970s and focuses on Jewish women. The magazine’s website states that Lilith Magazine is for: “Everyone interested in family politics, Jewish hair, race and reconciliation, new liturgies, good advice, fabulous fiction, parenting now, marriage equality, feminist philanthropy, sex, food—and so much more”. See more at: http://lilith.org/salons/#sthash.czTmInxH.dpuf The magazine focuses on social issues, religious issues, writing and poetry, travel, parenthood, food, and entertainment. There are four issues per year, and each Lilith Salon meeting will focus on an article or two. We will meet bi-monthly, rotating between members’ homes and IHC. It will be like a book club, but with less content to focus on and a bit more fun! Care to join us? Want more info? Contact Rosanne Marusa at [email protected], or Jenny Angel-Reece at [email protected]. GREENBRIAR PROJECT Please donate items for the children at Greenbriar Elementary. The Sisterhood will be sending home bags of food for at risk students. The items we are collecting are: fruit and applesauce cups, juice boxes, canned pasta and cans of soup, individual cups of Mac and cheese, oatmeal packets, cereal bars, granola bars (no peanuts please). Individual servings work best to place in the bags for the kids to take home. Every Christmas IHC provides a festive and plentiful lunch to the homeless families temporarily residing at the Dayspring Homeless Shelter in downtown Indianapolis. The lunch this year was a huge success, thanks to the following IHC volunteers and their families: Dodie Stein, Beryl Cohen, Jackie Suess, Amy Isaacs, Diane Evans, Joanne Bates, Laura Jeffs, Kathy Sax, Stefany Mitlak, Leah Alvies, Ira Mallory, Aron Kramer, and Shirley Backer. Thanks also to Myra Levine for all her help. IndyCAN IHC is participating in the Indianapolis Congregation Action Network, IndyCAN, a multi-ethnic, multi-faith, multi-racial federation of Indianapolis congregations that brings together people at the grass roots level to work for positive, systemic change in our community. The congregations in IndyCAN are not just the Northside congregations that IHC has long worked with. Many are inter city, minority congregations with which IHC has had little real contact. IndyCAN leaders connect congregations and their member with civic and political leaders to build relationships, identify common concerns, find solutions and take action to improve the quality of life and expand opportunities for all Indianapolis families, especially the most vulnerable. IndyCAN believes that solutions to the problems confronting our neighborhoods and community must involve those who are directly affected. RESTORATION OF ARJE-LEIJB MAUSOLEUM IN SHPOLA One of the famous Jewish tsadiks, philosophers, healers, and miraclemakers, Arje-Lejb the Shpoler (1725-1812) was born, lived, died and buried in Shpola. Bolsheviks, Nazis, and time practically destroyed the little mausoleum built over his grave, as well as the rest of the old Jewish cemetery in Shpola. Ten years ago members of the congregation “Menorah” made an attempt to restore this sacred place, but did not meet any support from the local authorities. They managed to do some cleaning and restoration of some headstones. In 2014, with the participation of members of the Hassidic movement from abroad, help of the local bosses, and just neighbors, members of this little community managed to restore the grave and even build the mausoleum. Members of “Menorah” were present at the dedication of the memorial. Also prominent were the current chairwoman of the Jewish community of Shpola, Alexandra Plakhotnik, and the Rabbi from Kiev. Local women gave a gift of the traditional Ukrainian style blouse they embroidered in memory of Arie-Leib, the Shpoler. A core group of IHC congregants, separate and distinct from IHC’s Social Justice Committee which will continue to work on interfaith hospitality, donating money to Gleaners, Second Helpings and other projects, has formed and is developing relationships with other people and congregations within IndyCAN, exploring community issues and proposed solutions identified by IndyCAN, and raising awareness within IHC of issues facing people, especially low income and minorities, in Indianapolis. If you would like to join the group or just learn more, contact Alex Slabosky at [email protected]. ISRAEL MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE (YOM HAZIKARON) This year the Yom Hazikaron Memorial will be on Tuesday, April 21 at 7:00 pm and the Israel Independence Day event in celebration of Yom HaAtzmaut will take place on Sunday, April 26 at 4:00 pm. This celebration will begin as Earth Day at the JCC winds down. We are encouraging everyone to come early and enjoy Earth Day, and then continue with a celebration for Yom HaAtzmaut. 6 IHC KULANU • MARCH 2015 www . ihcindy . org CELEBRATE PURIM AT IHC It has been decreed in the Land of Indianapolis that the Feast of Esther shall be observed at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation.
