DULCIMER DAY 2012
A HEARTFELT THANK YOU to all that worked to make our Fourteenth
Annual Dulcimer Day a success at the historic Buchanan Log House.
ored
We had wonderful weather and great performances but most of all, we honored
David with a day celebrating the music of the mountain dulcimer with picnic
ic
and friends.
Our TRADITION CONTINUES segment with adults and young people showwcasing the dulcimer was charming and entertaining. The log house was a
perfect setting for both the dulcimer and the house. We couldn't have a better
ter
home !
Lora, thank you for using our media articles and pics in the newsletter each
month. Thank you Nancy, for your help with notices to members and the
media. Thank you Sandy for arranging for the featured performers and
making the stage come alive, yet again. Special thanks to Mike Pentacost
for arranging sound for all the stage activities and to Houstons for great
food. Thanks also to Judy who updated the flyer again this year and to Jonathan
athan for
keeping the website current with this year's information. Thanks to the Cookeville gals for taking up the task of
the hospitality area. Thanks to Ethan because he supported and assisted whenver asked and led the group in great
musical selections. But most of all, thank you Neda. I knew that I could depend on you anytime in any way and I
appreciate your support and hard work during the year long preparation.
Finally, Thanks to all the performers and to the members of the Grand Old Dulcimer Club for another great
celebration of the mountain dulcimer.

Cumberland Mountain Deer Chase
Graciously supplied by Tull Glazener!
This traditional American song, circa 19th century, was originally learned by David Harrison
Macon in the 1880's from the black stevedores who worked alongside the Cumberland River near
his childhood home. Though the authorship is unknown, the tune was made popular by David
Harrison Macon, better known as Uncle Dave Macon, also known as The Dixie Dewdrop. Born
October 7, 1870, Uncle Dave Macon grew in notoriety as the first star of the Grand Old Opry.
Just In Time For
35th Annual
UNCLE DAVE MACON
DAYS FESTIVAL
He was born into a well-to-do family in central Tennessee, but after the family suffered financial
reversals following the Civil War they moved to Nashville, where they ran a hotel. The hotel served
as the venue for many vaudeville performers who came through town. The teenaged Macon
watched them as they rehearsed and he became fascinated with the various "trick" banjo players
then in vogue. Soon,
he talked his parents into buying him a banjo. It was not long before he was perfecting his skill as
a musician, storyteller, and entertainer. Unable to make a steady living as a musician as a young
adult, he started a freight line business, retiring at 52. He continued to entertain the locals as a
musician and a storyteller and never went anywhere without his banjo. One day a talent scout
offered Macon a job on the vaudeville circuit, where he became an immediate hit in cities from
Birmingham to Boston. By 1924, he began making records for Vocalion. He first recorded "Cumberland Mountain Deer Chase" (which he usually referred to as "Cumberland Mountain Deer
Race") in 1932. He continued touring and performing at the Opry right into his eighties, and did
his last show just months before he died in 1952 at the age of 82.

Enjoy!
In music and friendship,
Tull
Tull has been sharing the music of the mountain dulcimer since 1984. He has performed and
led workshops throughout the mid-west and south. Tull enjoys arranging aires, waltzes,
ragtime, traditional, old-time, contemporary, classical, and jazz for the mountain dulcimer.
His most recent book is called "Dulcified on Tin Pan Alley", which, as the name implies, is a
collection of old Tin Pan Alley era tunes. The selection includes things like "Take Me Out
to the Ball Game", "Daisy Bell", "Button Up Your Overcoat", "My Blue Heaven", "Peg O My
Heart", "Whispering", etc. The arrangements are in D-A-d tuning, with a few requiring a
capo. Many are multi-part arrangements. The CD, which is included with the book, has
separate tracks for each of the individual parts for each arrangement, plus an additional
track with all the parts being played together.
Tull also has available a series of teaching/workshop CD packets. Each packet includes the
tab for one tune, plus an accompanying teaching CD. It's like having a private lesson on a
CD! Titles include things like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", "Vincent" (aka "Starry
Starry Night"), "Dream A Little Dream of Me", "Mr. Sandman", "Last Date", etc. The most
recent ones are "Both Sides Now" and "Moon River". There are 25 titles in all.
