Dear Parent I am writing to you on the back of a hugely successful first term in order to provide you with a few important dates for House activities and to celebrate some of the many achievements of the students in Bowen House. There are two dates after school that I would like all students in Bowen House to attend (Year 7 through to 13), as we seek to build even stronger team spirit and develop our House identity further. Please can I ask for your support in keeping these dates free. Wednesday 11 February will see our House trip take place after school. Details of this will follow shortly but I would like all students from Year 7 to 13 to make the effort to attend what will hopefully be a really enjoyable evening. Tuesday 24 February will be the first round of our House Music Competition which will start at 16:00. This is a new format which will see solo performers from the House perform to the Bowen audience. The House will then vote for their favourite acts. The winning performers will go forward to represent us at the House Music Competition. Details will follow shortly about how your child can enter this. Other dates that you may wish to attend are the House Athletics Competition (10 February), the House Music Final (evening of 17 March) and the Swimming Gala (19 March). At the start of the school year, the atrium was filled with students from all four Houses for the school photo, and Simon Giddings spoke to the community about our focus for the year, expectations and growth mind-sets. With these words in mind, much has already taken place this year within the House; Alex Mortensen has done a fantastic job as Bowen House Captain, ably assisted by our Assistant House Captains: Max Rosgen and Chloe Ng. Their hard work and dedication meant that over $25,000 was raised for the schools chosen charity, Small Group Homes. Additionally the House were fully supportive of ‘Pink Day’ raising over $12,000 for the HK Cancer Fund. Successful trips have taken place to Thailand with Year 8, and Year 9 enjoyed a successful trip to China, where Mrs Thomson was delighted with how hardworking and kind-hearted the students were whilst working to renovate an orphanage; it was certainly one of my proudest moments as a teacher. The Year 13’s enjoyed their trip to New Zealand, and I would like to give a particular mention to Tom Cooper and Mark Lam for completing their HKAYP Gold expedition but also for the way they grew and developed personally as the week progressed Kellett School Association Limited Tel: (852) 3120 0700 Pok Fu Lam Campus 2 Wah Lok Path, Wah Fu, Pok Fu Lam, Hong Kong Fax: (852) 2875 0262 Kowloon Bay Campus 7 Lam Hing St., Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong Fax: (852) 2305 2292 www.kellettschool.com We have many skilled performers within Bowen House. Ela Moss flew back a day early from the China trip in order to perform in the Nutcracker, and our wonderful school performance of Blood Brothers had Bowen’s Oliver Overman in the lead role, with Freya Darnton, Gwyneth Choy and Archie Wilkinson playing beautifully in the band. Additionally, Archie expertly played the Last Post in the House Assemblies for our week of remembrance. I am also thrilled for Sebastian Clifford from 7 Bowen who had the lead role in HKYAF production of Oliver. Throughout the term, our boys and girls have sported the colour blue at numerous House sporting events. In the House Cross-Country, we saw Bowen come third overall and I was delighted to see the spirit of Bowen House in full bloom as the students applauded each other across the line. Special mention must go to Oliver Overman for coming first, Alex Mortensen fourth, Ela Moss fifth, Zac Campbell-Breeden third, and Yuvrajsingh(Yuvi) Bayas for taking fifth place. In the second half of the term, I was thrilled to see not only all the students taking part in the House Basketball and Rugby competitions but, also to see the support that their fellow House members gave our competitors. Suzannah Hornett was part of the team that represented Kellett in the thirty sixth Hong Kong rowing championships last term. She was entered in the women's four and her team achieved the gold medal, whilst she also won silver for her single entry. Sophie Krantz and Jenny Jones were part of the successful Kellett U16 HKSSF Netball team our Cross Country division 3 girls got promoted and the boys came second with Joseph Rabey placing first! A huge congratulations also go to the U14 Football team who became ISSFHK champions, this included Eddie Bischoff and Jake Ford. Our swimmers also did well: Abby Adebiyi (9 Bowen) achieved a Bronze medal in the U14 50 free style event, Ryan Whittington (10 Bowen) a 200m Individual Medley silver medal and a 50m Butterfly silver medal. In the Language Perfect competition, Silver awards went to Charlotte Bird and Takano Kobayashi and Bronze went to Rose Duckworth and Mia Hornett. At various times throughout the year, Bowen House have been leading the House Cup Competition and they should all feel truly proud of their achievements, both in class and beyond. I mention these House highlights because I know that this House community is at its happiest if each and every one of us, pupils, teachers and parents, treats the other as an individual, worthy of kindness and respect. It is an enormous privilege to be Head of Bowen House at Kellett School and I thank you, the parents, for your continued support. I am looking forward to another successful term.
