June 7
Scripture: Genesis 3:8-15, Psalm 130, 2 Corinthians 4:13 – 5:1, Mark 3:20-35
Our lessons today begin when God learns Adam and Eve ate of the fruit of the
tree of wisdom. In the gospel lesson, Jesus returns home and is accused of being
Satan. He responds with parables about a divided house and proceeds to call all his
followers his family. And in 2 Corinthians the words often heard at funerals are heard.
“So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner
nature is being renewed every day.”
June 14
Scripture: Ezekiel 17:22-24, Psalm 92:1-4 and 12-15, 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 and
14-17, Mark 4:26-34.
In the gospel lesson Jesus shares the parable of the growing seed and the
mustard seed. The epistle passage from 2 Corinthians concludes with the words, “So if
anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see,
everything has become new.”
June 21
Scripture: Job 38:1-11, Psalm 133, 2 Corinthians 6:1-13, Mark 4:35-41
The scripture listed above, including the passage of Jesus calming the storm, are
the suggested lectionary readings for Sunday, June 21, but the “Bells of the Bay,” bell
choir will again be with us on this Sunday and their music will shape our worship.
June 28
Scripture: Wisdom of Solomon 1:13-15 and 2:23-24, Psalm 30, 2 Corinthians
8:7-15, Mark 5:21-43
In the Wisdom of Solomon, a book that we seldom read, we hear about earthly
life and eternal life, while in 2 Corinthians, Paul encourages the Corinthians to be
generous with their gifts. Jesus heals Jairus’ daughter and the woman who touched his
cloak in the gospel lesson.
July 5
Scripture: Ezekiel 2:1-5, Psalm 123, 2 Corinthians 12:2-10, Mark 6:1-13
The prophet Ezekiel is commissioned in the Old Testament lesson and in the
New Testament epistle lesson, Paul shares his glorious, empowering visions and his
fleshly “thorns” that keep him humble. Mark tells us of Jesus’ rejection in his hometown
and the commissioning and sending out of his disciples.
July 12
Scripture: Amos 7:7-15, Psalm 85:8-13, Ephesians 1:3-14, Mark 6:14-29
Words of conflict and judgement fill the Old Testament lesson of Amos, while in
Paul’s letter we come to know God’s love and blessings through the work of Jesus
Christ. In Mark, Jesus learns of the death of John the Baptist.
July 19
Scripture: Jeremiah 23:1-6, Psalm 23, Ephesians 2:11-22, Mark 6:30-34 and
53-56
The Old Testament lesson from the prophet Jeremiah begins with God promising
to punish the shepherds who have destroyed and scattered the sheep of his pasture
and ends with promise of a “righteous Branch” being raised up for David. In his letter to
the Ephesians, Paul reminds his readers that all, even Gentiles (formerly outsiders),
who believe in Jesus are one in Christ. In the gospel of Mark, Jesus is pursued by
crowds, seeks solitude, and heals the sick in Gennesaret.
July 26
Scripture: 2 Kings 4:42-44, Psalm 145:10-18, Ephesians 3:14-21, John 6:1-21
Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians offers a prayer for his readers to know and
comprehend the breadth, length, height and depth of God’s love. In the gospel we hear
the familiar story where Jesus feeds the five thousand, misses the boat and then walks
on water. The Old Testament lesson isn’t as spectacular. In it, Elisha only feeds 100
men!
Pastor Dale will be on vacation this Sunday and Rev. Selena Blackwell will be
feeding the congregation.
A note about our worship this summer – Most summers I deviate from the suggested
lectionary readings and preach on scripture related to a theme or topic(s) chosen by the
congregation or worship committee. This summer, I am planning to use the lectionary
readings, but would be pleased to address any special topics you might like to hear
about. So if you have any suggestions, feel free to forward them to me.
Another UCC First
The United Church of Christ and it’s predecessor denominations have been
known for many firsts. The first of which was the ordination of the first woman,
Antoinette Brown, by the Congregational churches in 1851. Earlier this year, the United
Church of Christ announced another first for our denomination. The NYFD appointed
their first female chaplain and she is an ordained United Church of Christ pastor.
The March 3, 2015 UCC News article, written by Connie Larkman, begins, “Her
father is a minister, her grandfather was a firefighter. The Rev. Ann Kansfield has
managed to combine both professions, sworn in Tuesday, March 3, as the first female
chaplain in the New York Fire Department.
Kansfield, a United Church of Christ minister and co-pastor of Greenpoint
Reformed Church in Brooklyn, was chosen from a field of 350 applicants and will
become the NYFD's eighth chaplain, joining a rabbi, three Catholic priests, and
Episcopalian and Baptist clergy to minister to more than 10,000 firefighters.

Bells of the Bay Concerts
Please make note and tell your friends, the “Bells of the Bay,” bell choir will again
be with us on Sunday morning, June 21. This group is a wonderful bell choir and the
music they offer is inspirational and heart warming. No sermon is planned for this
Sunday, so that is another reason to make a special effort to be with us on this Sunday!
A Christmas concert is also being planned for December.
Pastor’s Message — You are invited!
I would like to invite you to read a book with me. The book is, “We Refused to Lead a Dying
Church!” The book, recommended by many, is a collection of the stories of 15 churches that
have “come back against all odds.” Written by Paul Nixon, the book considers a variety of
churches from across the country that, in a manner of speaking, have been resurrected. Mr
Nixon says;
 These churches understand the Bible differently.
 Their pastors lead differently. One of the congregations is not clergy led at all.
 In at least three cases, laity became the major drivers of change and innovation.
 In one case, the breakthrough came in a pastor’s second decade of tenure in the congregation. That’s




unusual, but not impossible.
These churches thrive in different parts of the United States, in big cities and smaller communities.
They reflect the varieties of church size dynamics in terms of how decisions are made and how change
takes place. Six of these faith communities still gather less than a hundred people for worship each week.
Several of them experienced painful congregational conflict on the road to new life. Other churches
embraced their journey to life more easily.

Please join with me in reading this book and seeking out the insights that might help us grow (whatever
that means) at Immanuel. I have several books I can share with readers and can get more quickly. We
can decide how to discuss the book when we have a better idea of who and how many will read the
book.

JUNE 7, 2015
David Cannon, Jr., son of Patti & David Cannon, Sr., graduated from Salisbury
University in December 2014. To attend graduate school to pursue his Master
Of Medical Science in Physician Assistant studies.
Amanda Jackson, daughter of Deborah & G. Philip Jackson, Jr, graduated from
Salisbury University with a degree in Social Work on May 21. She has been accepted
to the Masters Program in Social Work at Salisbury University.
Amanda Leonard, daughter of Kim & Dave Leonard, graduated from the University of
Baltimore School of Law on May 18. She will sit for the bar exam in July and will
begin her career as a Judicial Clerk in the Circuit Court of Wicomico County in August.
Haylee Tyler, daughter of Gina & Troy Tyler, graduated from Salisbury University
on May 21, with a degree in Social Work. She has been accepted into the Advanced
Standing Masters Program in Social Work at Salisbury University.
Andrew Schnoor, son of Donna & Max Schnoor graduated from the University of
Maryland-College Park on May 22. He plans to work on the family farm.
Hannah McDonald, daughter of Claudia & Steve McDonald, graduated from
Salisbury University. Will be working at Lollipop Lane this summer.
Michael Ryan Jones, son of Julie Jones and the late Mike Jones, graduated
from the University of Maryland – College Park with a degree in Business Finance
on May 22.
Garrett Luthy, son of Tammy & Danny Luthy, husband of Kristina Luthy and
father of Verena & Scarlet, graduated from LEAD Maryland on March 14, 2015.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION BOARD
VBS will be August 3 – August 7. We are in need of volunteers. Help will be
needed in serving dinner and during the program itself. Contact Diana Krotee

We also look forward to honoring the high school and college graduates on June 7th.
