YOUR ARRIVAL
Your arrival at Salzburg airport
Once you've collected your luggage you’ll find your Thomson team waiting for you - just look for
the Thomson logo. Please let us know if you’re having any baggage problems, or if you need any
special assistance so we can help.
In the arrivals hall, there are toilet facilities on the right hand side and the exit doors you need to
go through to meet your Thomson team are directly in front of you. Trolleys can be found in the
arrivals hall and are free of charge.
If you wish to grab a snack or drink before your journey, you can purchase these from the small
bakery which is located outside the arrival doors.
Please be aware that many cash machines in Germany do not accept Visa Debit cards. You can
however easily use cash machines in Austria and there are two located in the arrivals hall.
Our team will tell you where to find your coach or taxi for your transfer to Ruhpolding. There may
be customers arriving from other flights on your transfer, so we'll do our best to keep you
informed of any waiting time before your vehicle leaves for the resort.
Transfer to your resort
When your transfer is ready to leave for Ruhpolding, we'll let you know an estimated journey
time and explain the route, including any stops or drop-offs along the way.
Generally, the transfer from Salzburg airport to Ruhpolding takes around 45 minutes. To reduce
transfer times, sometimes you may wait for a short while at the airport for additional flights to
land. In these circumstances, your travelling time to your resort will usually be less as the coach
will stop at fewer resorts along the way.
Just so you know, sometimes our transfer vehicles can’t make it right to the door of your
accommodation so there might be a short walk, possibly carrying your luggage, to get to the
entrance of your accommodation.
If you've booked car hire prior to your departure please contact a Thomson Holiday Advisor at
the airport - they'll be able to direct you to the car hire office.
If you’re travelling to your resort by car or train, you’ll find some information waiting for you at
your accommodation reception so you can arrange to meet your Holiday Advisor.
Check in and settle in
When you arrive at your accommodation, it’s usual for reception to request your passport.
If you have any dietary requirements this is an ideal time to inform reception. Alternatively, you
can contact us on [email protected] and we’ll let your accommodation know before

Please report any issues or requests you have to your accommodation reception. If anything
remains unresolved, please contact your Thomson Holiday Advisor who will be happy to help.
When you arrive in you room, don't be surprised if your twin room has one bed frame but with
two mattresses and two sets of bed linen. This is called a German or Austrian twin and is normal
both in Germany and the wider Alps. It is also normal that tea and coffee making facilities are not
provided in guest rooms.
Safety standards with regards to balconies differ in Germany. You may be staying in a room with a
balcony that is lower than we would expect in the UK. Please take care when on the balcony and
do not lean on or over the railings. Children aged 12 and under must be supervised and not left
unattended on the balcony at any time.
Welcome walkabout
Your Holiday Advisor will meet you at the Tourist Information Office in the centre of Ruhpolding
for a short walking your around the town. We'll show you how to get out and about, where the
best spots for coffee and ice creams are, and explain more about some of the fantastic places to
explore while you're here.

YOUR RESORT
This info is to help you get your bearings. You’ll also find many of these places along with your
accommodation marked on the resort map.
Banks and cash points
There are two banks in the centre of town - Sparkasse on Haupstrasse and the Volksbank, also on
Haupstrasse, both near the Tourist Office. Both are open Monday - Friday from 8am - 12pm, then
open again 2pm - 4.30pm apart from on Wednesdays when they are closed in the afternoon from
12pm. Cash machines are available with instructions in English, and are accessible outside of
business hours.
Please be aware that Visa Debit cards and Mastercards are not accepted in all cash machines in
Germany, although the ATMs in the Volksbank and Sparkasse both accept them. Maestro is
accepted. Cash machines that accept Visa Debit are also located in the nearby town of Traunstein
(Sparkasse), and also at Salzburg Airport. If you are planning on travelling further afield, it is best
to take out cash as a precaution.
The banks are also the best place to exchange foreign currency.
Bus stops
Bus stops are marked with a green 'H' on a yellow background circle.
All numbered busses, including the Mozart Express, leave from the left hand side of the railway
station’s ticket office. All lettered buses (the local service) leave from the right hand side of the
ticket office, closest to the Brot & Kaffe Haus.
With your Extra Card bus journeys are free. You can usually take bikes on to the busses but there
may be a small charge.

Church
Ruhpolding's main church is St George's in the centre of town, very prominent on top of the hill.
Catholic Mass is held in German at 8.30am and 10am every second and fourth Sunday, and 7pm
every Saturday. The church is open for prayer and reflection during the day.
Alternatively, you can visit St John's Evangelical Protestant Church off Zellestrasse. Their Sunday
service is at 9.30am.
Doctor
There is a range of doctors in Ruhpolding depending on your needs, however please note that all
practices are closed at weekends.
We recommend Dr. Lang GP - Brandstatter Strasse 5 - Tel +49 (0)86 632 992.

clothes shop at the top end of the Hauptstrasse. The telephone for the front desk of the hospital
is +49 (0)86 63 520.
The hospital can issue prescription medication if it is needed in an emergency and the Apotheke
(see below) are closed. The hospital does not have a Casualty Department and physical injuries
will be treated at Traunstein Hospital.
If you do need to see a doctor during your stay please take your European Health Insurance Card
(EHIC) and your travel insurance details with you. Also please be sure to inform Your Holiday
Advisor.
Internet
All of the hotels offer free WiFi just ask reception for any access codes that you may need. You
can also use the public computer at the Haus des Gastes with tickets purchased at the Tourist
Information Centre, €3 per day or €5 week.
Lifts for walkers
There are two summer lifts in the area - the Unterberg chair lift and the Rauschberg cable car.
With your Extra card you can enjoy one free ride on the cable care during your stay, and on the
chair lift you can take advantage of one free ride every day.
See ‘Getting around’ for more information on using the lift network for summer walking.
Newsagent
There are two newsagents in Ruhpolding, the Lotto Bayern, by the Train Station and the Post
Office near the top of the Hauptstrasse . Both sell tobacco, drinks, German magazines and a
selection of small souvenirs. Unfortunately they do not sell English newspapers.
Pharmacy
There are two pharmacies, called 'Apotheke', in the centre of Ruhpolding - the Adler Apotheke
next door to the Sparkasse bank and the Kur Apotheke across the road. Pharmacies have the
same opening times as shops (note that they still close for lunch like most other shops).
You can get most prescription medicine here, as well as things you may normally find in the
supermarket in the UK, such as plasters and painkillers. If the pharmacies are closed and you
need emergency prescriptions please go to the hospital located at the top of the Haupstrasse.
Post office
The Post Office is located at the top of the Hauptstrasse, between the hospital and the "NKD"
clothes shop. It is open 8am - 12pm and 2.30pm - 6pm everyday. It is closed Tuesday and
Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday. A stamp for the UK will cost 75 cents.
Railway station
The railway station in Ruhpolding is at the bottom of the Haupstrasse. This line is a single track
running to Traunstein, the local market town and with your Extra Card you can travel for free.

Supermarket
There are two supermarkets in resort - Edeka, past the Hospital to the end of the Hauptstrasse

where you cross the road and follow the path directly in front of you. There is also Penny Markt,
10 minutes walk from the town centre on Zellerstrasse. From the roundabout at the Brot & Kaffe
Haus walk to the traffic lights and turn left.
Edeka is open 7.30am - 7.30pm and Penny Markt is open 7am - 8pm. Both supermarkets are
open during lunchtime and are closed all day Sunday. Edeka is more expensive but has a much
wider selection, and also a café.
Tourist information
The Tourist Information office is centrally located on the edge of the Kurpark near the Kurhaus
(meeting hall). Herbert and his staff speak very good English and are full of knowledge about the
area and that there is to do in and around Ruhpolding. They are open from 8am to 5.30pm on
weekdays, 9am to 4pm on Saturdays and 9am to 12noon on Sundays. They also remain open over
lunchtime.

GETTING AROUND
Here are some basics to help you get around Ruhpolding and the surrounding area.
Buses
In Ruhpolding there are two public bus lines, both are freewith the eXtra card.
Firstly you have the dorf bus (A, B, C & D) which runs around the local village and nearby areas (eg
Rauschberg lift & Unterberg lift)
Then you have the Oberbayern bus which takes you to Reit im Winkl (stopping at the 3 lakes ‘Little
Canada’) Inzell and also Traunstein which are the three biggest villages to Ruhpolding.(9506)
There is also a special bus called the Mozart express which takes you to Salzburg for just 5 Euros
with your extra card. It leaves the train station at 9.35am Mon –Fri (except bank holidays) and
drops you off at the Mirabellplatz. You will get to enjoy the whole day in the city before catching
the return bus at 4pm, again from the Mirabellplatz.

Taxis
There is one taxi company in Ruhpolding.

You can call them yourself or ask your hotel reception who will be happy to call on your behalf.
Trains
The railway station is at the bottom of the hauptstrasse (main street).
With your extra card you can travel on the train for free to the local town of Traunstein, from
there you can change to travel on to destinations further afield. For times and prices, please
refer to the German railway website www.bahn.de

Lifts
There are two lifts in Ruhpolding- The Rauschberg and Unternberg
The Rauschberg is Ruhpolding's highest local mountain at an altitude of 1.626m.
First ascent: 9.15am - Last descent: 5pm

The journey up itself is pretty magnificent, and at the top you can relax on one of the basket
chairs watching the handglider’s and paragliders taking off. You can also have a look at the ‘mile of
art’ on the hiking trail up there where there is sculpture and descriptions of local zoology created
by artist Walter Angerer jnr.
The Unternberg chairlift is a great day out whether you want to hike up and catch the chair down

Here are suggestions of places to visit during your holiday. All but the Farmer’s Walk are
excursions run with a local supplier which you can book through me after our Welcome Walkabout
or throughout your stay.
Farmer's Walk– Monday
Come with me on this stunning and magical walk through the beautiful landscape of the
Bavarian countryside. We will catch the bus to the stunning Three Lakes area then venture into
the mountains for this gentle stroll following the river through the forest.
We stop for a farmer’s lunch at a picturesque and quaint alpine Alm’s hut surrounded by
impressive mountain peaks - Included in the price

Berchtesgaden - Tuesday
Visit the royal Bavarian spa town, famous for its old working salt mines.
From Berchtesgaden you have the option to visit the Salt mines and be given a guided tour of
the complex tunnel system, dress up as a minor and journey by train, slide and even boat deep
into the holes of the ‘white gold’ that made Bavaria rich.
Another option is to visit the famous ‘Eagles Nest’, Adolf Hitler's teahouse for diplomats given
to him on his for his 50th birthday. Witness amazing 360° views from Hitler's mountain retreat,
and get an insight into history at the documentation Obersalzburg museum. Audio tour
available in English.
Or you can choose to go to Koenigssee where you can enjoy a scenic boat trip on this
spectacular lake which is compared to the fjords of Norway because of the rugged cliffs
surrounding it.
Due to time restrictions it is not possible to visit both the Salt Mines and the Eagle’s Nest
during the excursion.
For those guests wishing to visit neither the Salt Mines nor the Eagle’s Nest, you can explore
the Bavarian town of Berchtesgarten.

pretty Fraueninsel.
Find out the history behind some of Bavaria’s well known castles and the most famous
influence behind them in the King Ludwig museum.

Exploring Ruhpolding
If you would like a helping hand to guide you through unfamiliar terrain, I am always happy to sit
down with the map and help you decide on a suitable route. And don’t forget, I lead the Farmer’s
Walk on a Monday which is a great way to experience one of the most beautiful walks available
locally whilst in good company.
Farmers' Walk
On Monday at 11.15am meet me at the railway station for the Famers’ walk where we catch the
local bus to the Weitsee lakes, also known as ‘little Canada’. We then follow the river until we
reach the pastureland where we will take our time over a leisurely farmers’ lunch at an alpine hut
overlooked by impressive mountain peaks. We then walk, downhill through forest, past waterfalls,
across rivers and over working farmland before finishing the walk with a fairytale forest and
drink, served by our friend Erhart, in a traditional Austrian Gasthof while we wait for the bus to
take us back in to town. A walk to remember and not to be missed.

buildings of unique architectural style where traditional tools are still being used.

The Cowbell Forge Museum
The Cowbell Forge Museum (Glockenschmiede Museum) Hasslberg, tel. +49 (0)86 632 309. A 350
year old bell smithy preserved in working order at its original site.

The 'Old Timers' Museum
The 'Old Timers' Museum (Schnauferi - stall) on Bacherwinkl, tel. +49 (0)86 639 948. A must for
any motorhead, this museum is a celebration of automobiles, its chief exhibit being a collection
of seventy classic motorcycles dating back to 1924.
Local markets
Local markets are well worth a visit, not only for the colours and atmosphere but also to use your
bartering skills to pick up some excellent bargains. Ruhpolding itself doesn't hold a market, but
Traunstein, easily accessible by train, has a market day on Saturday.
Events and concerts
Every week Ruhpolding has a variety of events to offer like Aqua fit, archery, golf and guided
walks. The programme changes weekly so please ask for details.
Here are a few of the events happening in July:
Every Sunday 10:45am – Kurhaus or Kurpark weather permitting.
‘CONCERT OF FOLK MUSIC’ - Presented by local folk musicians in traditional dress, enjoy listening
to the sound of Bavaria.
Walking

journey up and down on The Rauschberg Cable Car and unlimited use of The Unternberg Chairlift.
If you would like to buy a pair of stout walking shoes to take full advantage of the breadth of trails
in the region, Sport Plenk on Haupstrasse has a good selection of modern styles of light and heavy
shoes.

Cycling
Bikes can be hired from Radl-Sepp just up from the railway station on the Hauptstrasse, tel +49
(0)86 635 607. If you are staying in the Steinbach, bikes can also be hired directly from the hotel,
just ask at reception.

Aqua Fit
Aqua Fit sessions are held throughout on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9.15am at the Vita
Alpina Swimming Baths. Your Holiday Advisor will be able to give you more details.
Golf, Archery and Rifle Shooting
If you're looking to try your hand at a new sport there are weekly sampler lessons available for
golf, archery and rifle shooting. Golf and archery can be experienced on Monday mornings at the
golf course and Maiergschwendt hotel respectively, and an opportunity to practice target shooting
with authentic biathlon rifles takes place at the Chiemgau Arena on Tuesdays and Thursdays from
11am (sessions include a tour of the stadium).
Guided Walks
From Monday to Friday there are short guided walks to local destinations departing from the
tourist office. The programme changes regularly so please consult the Tourist Information Office
if you would like to join one. Also remember that we have our own Farmers’ Walk for you to
enjoy new perspectives on the landscape that you might not have experienced before.
Disc Golf
For something a bit different, try the Disc Golf near the Unternbergbahn chairlift - making frisbee
a tense and thrilling game of precision.
Paragliding

can organise both solo and tandem taster sessions.
Eating out
Café Janos
Café Janos on Hauptstr.45 has a bright, cheery atmosphere and while it makes hearty pizzas there
is also a great deal of variety in its menu with main dishes starting from 10 Euros. Be sure to
enjoy their succulent (and very filling) Hungarian dishes, or their American Toast if you want a
lunchtime snack. It also serves food until 11pm.

Something quick and easy
For something quick and easy, takeaways in Ruhpolding include the Napoli near the Haus Des
Gastes and police station, Pizza & Co. on the Haupstrasse near the Wittelsbach, and the
Ruhpolding Kebab House on the lower end of the Haupstrasse as it approaches the train station.
All offer a wide variety of quick, easy and delicious fast food options of the highest quality.
Ruhpolding also features a famous café, the Windbeutelgrafin on Branderstrasse. This attracts
coach parties from all over Europe to sample their famous desserts with paper swan-neck
ornaments that record which number customer you are, I believe they are up in the 6 million’s to
date.
Don’t forget to try the famous Ruhpoldinger Schnitzel, like the traditional Wiener schnitzel
(Vienna Art) it is a pork escalope in breadcrumbs but covered with cheese and fresh tomatoes.
