Gecko Studio Gallery Newsletter – September/October 2011 Points of View - A group show by students of Mandy Gunn in a variety of media - participating artists are Suzanne Brandenberger, John Brandenberger, Jill Harvey, Jill Butterfield, Marni Hattam, Rob Hattam, Anne Waters, Robin Stevens, Deb Bray, Elizabeth Landy, Helen Harrison, Helen Mackenzie, Neil Mackenzie, Rosemary Livingstone, Bruce Grainger, Ian Gunn & Mandy Gunn From Mandy Gunn……. I am very excited about this exhibition as it’s a first for the art group I run on Fridays and Wednesdays and for most of the members it’s the first time they will have exhibited their work publically, which is quite a confronting experience for them! We have been working together for about 3 years in my studio and if the weather is good, outside at various venues. There tends to be a predominant land/seascape theme as most of us live along the coastWalkerville, you will see features quite prominently. Within this theme and others I have encouraged an experimental approach with materials; for example Helen Harrison uses her camera to record detailed shots which she then forms into grids of box like forms, while Jill Harvey has concentrated on ink spattering with water colour to get her weathered beach paintingsthis came about after a rainy painting day one week. Robin Stevens has been trying palette knife painting while Helen Mackenzie and Suzanne Brandenberger have used watercolours, many of their works having been made on holiday locations like the Kimberley, Northern Territory, Menindee Lakes etc. Rosemary Livingstone has spent some time working as a volunteer in East Timor and her acrylic paintings on board have come from her impressions there. Print making is a favourite activity with everyone and started out with monoprints-Jill Butterfield, Anne Waters and Ian Gunn have examples of these and Jill, Elizabeth Landy, Deb Bray and others have progressed onto Perspex prints, some of which have been treated quite experimentally to achieve what is more a monoprint. Bruce Grainger arrives with lino cuts he has worked on at home to print in the studio and then paints into them to create a unique look. 1 Of course drawing is a fantastic starting point as well as an end in itself so quite often we return to the basics with charcoal still lifes and there are some lovely examples of this in John Brandenberger and Rob Hattam’s work. Sadly for all of us, Rob is no longer with us, so his exhibited work is his last and we dedicate this exhibition to Rob’s memory. The growing independence of individuals to work on their own is fantastic and it’s exciting after a break to see what everyone brings in: sketch books [a very important part of being an artist], new works, information about exhibitions seen, new materials etc. Working in the group is wonderfully supportive, reinforcing successes and giving everyone a huge amount of confidence. This exhibition breaks new ground for everyone, not only with the making of artworks themselves but also the know how of how to present these in public for a show. Many of this group had never even picked up a paintbrush before joining the group. Mandy Gunn ~~~~ Gecko Studio Gallery • • • What’s next?? This special exhibition and accompanying book is a fascinating search through public and family records that trace the lives of one Aboriginal family in the first half of the twentieth century. Footprints explores the different places the Pepper family lived along with extraordinary details about the events of their lives, their resilience in the face of adversity, and the strong family connections they fiercely protected despite government policies that aimed to separate so called “half-caste” Aboriginal people from their full-blood family relations. Featuring information panels and a short film, Footprints also illustrates how Aboriginal people can retrace the steps of their ancestors through public records, and in the case of the Stolen Generations, reconnect with families and communities. South Gippsland Youth Council calls on all young filmmakers to produce and enter short films for the 2011 South Gippsland Youth Film Festival in October. Entrants must be between the ages of 15 and 25 and be a resident of South Gippsland, or have a connection to the South Gippsland Region; this means young people who have been residents of South Gippsland and left the district for work/study are still eligible to enter their films. Entrants will need to submit their films on DVD, and can obtain an entry form with full details by contacting Sophie Dixon, Community Strengthening Support Officer at South Gippsland Shire Council on 5662 9202 or via email [email protected]. Prom Coast Film Society The Prom Coast Film Society offers a BONUS SCREENING - 6:00pm on Friday 7th October in the Fish Creek Hall. The first film to be shown is Australian Rules, a 2002 Australian film directed by Paul Goldman. The film was adapted from the novel, Deadly, Unna?, by Phillip Gwynne. It stars Nathan Phillips, Luke Carroll, Tom Budge, Brian Torry and Lisa Flanagan. The film was launched at the Melbourne International Film Festival. Australian Rules is about a young man experiencing the hardships of growing up in rural South Australia, in particular dealing with the issue of racial relationships through the central characters, their involvement in local Australian Rules football, and aboriginal players. In an isolated South Australian fishing town, the only thing that connects two communities the whites and the blacks is football. Gary Black (Nathan Phillips) and Dumby Red (Luke Carroll) are an exception; teenage best friends from different sides of the tracks. Dumby is the star of the football team and likely to become the next big Aboriginal star in the big leagues. Gary is the bookish son of a hard-drinking and brutal white fisherman, Bob Black (Simon Westaway). He is attracted to Dumby’s beautiful sister, Clarence (Lisa Flanagan). When their team wins the premiership, Dumby’s elation is short-lived. He is passed over for the best-on-ground prize, setting off a chain of events that ends in tragedy. 8:00pm Friday 7th October in the Fish Creek Hall A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 film adaptation of Anthony Burgess’s 1962 novel of the same name. It was written, directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick. It features disturbing, violent images, facilitating its social commentary on psychiatry, youth gangs, and other social, political, and economic subjects in a dystopian, future Britain. ● The rules governing Victorian Film Societies allow only subscriptions, rather than charging for individual films and the Prom Coast Film Society will be offering annual, six month and three month membership subscriptions. The exhibition explores Chevalier’s landscape work in depth, spanning Victoria from the Grampians to the Gippsland and Great Dividing Ranges. Throughout his long and illustrious career as an artist and illustrator, Chevalier developed a fresh and lively style that was entirely his own. The exhibition will assemble Chevalier’s most significant works, accompanied by lesser known works, studies, sketches, and a complete set of lithographs. Dark Star unites recent works by Knox ranging from intimate light installations to large-scale sculptures. Opening: Friday 16 September 6.30pm. ● Averse - Delphine Reist. 29 October to 11 December. Acclaimed French artist Delphine Reist has established a profile as one of Europe’s most innovative makers of video art. Her compelling work Averse 6 (2007) has been shown in biennales around the world, and has been collected by the Pompidou Centre, Paris. In a Gippsland first, the Gippsland Art Gallery presents Averse (translated as ‘downpour’ in French). In an extension of the actual gallery space, we observe the falling and shattering of fluorescent light bulbs. In its slow and inevitable sequence, Averse surmises the end of civilisation. Opening Friday 18 Nov 6.30pm ● New Romantics - Rob Bartolo, William Breen, Sheridan Brown, Jane Burton, Jason Cordero, Peter Daverington, Iris Fischer, Louise Hearman, Chris Langlois, Tony Lloyd, Joanna Logue, John Morris, Saffron Newey, Sarah Nguyen, Izabella Pluta, Kathryn Ryan, Sam Shmith, Sophia Szilagyi, Camilla Tadich, Stephen Wickham, Philip Wolfhagen, Greg Wood. 19 November to 15 January. Something is happening in Australian art today. We are witnessing the resurgence of ideas that took root centuries ago – a return to passion in art, and a return to atmosphere and awe. Art today recognises that we have undergone a spiritual loss in recent times, and is summoning the courage to fill it. Its links to an art of two centuries ago are profound and undeniable. Historians called it Romanticism; a disposition for melancholic yearning, for communion with nature, for the sublime. Australian artists, in countless numbers, are engaging with these themes again today. New Romantics surveys the work of twenty-two contemporary Australian artists who have reinvigorated this movement. This is the first exhibition that seeks to understand a paradigm shift that is shaping the course of Australian art in the twenty-first century. New Romantics coincides with the release of a major new publication. ● Port of Sale Civic Centre 68-70 Foster St, Sale. Ph 5142 3372. Open weekdays 10 – 5pm. Memory Weaving will be Jacki Parry's first solo exhibition in Gippsland and Victoria since leaving Australia in 1964. Intimate and obsessive, the Memory Weavings are an ongoing group of works which begin as drawings and develop into intaglio prints on handmade paper. The exhibition explores various strands of her artistic practice as printmaker, sculptor and papermaker. ● The Shape of Things - Dan Wollmering. 6 August - 1 October. Dan Wollmering's current exhibition focuses on his wood sculptures in various timbers and celebrates his significant output as a sculptor. As an artist, he researches new ways to find meaning in historical and contemporary abstract sculptural form. Using contrasting edges, form and shape we are taken on his journey with objects as life. Opening Celebration: Friday, 19 August, 6.00pm - 8.00pm. RSVP to 5128 5700. ● Timescapes - Sarah Reark. 20 August - 18 September. Sarah Reark's Timescapes takes us on a journey through her connection and response to the Gippsland landscape. In her paintings, Reark explores the transformation, immersion, transcience and solidity in environment inflicted and conflicted by time. Opening Celebration: Friday, 19 August, 6.00pm - 8.00pm. RSVP to 5128 5700. ● In the Grey Scale - Li Gang. 3 September - 16 October. Curated by the Australian artist Tony Trembath, Li Gang - in the grey scale surveys the recent photographic work of this Australian-trained Chinese artist. Li Gang is a graduate of Victorian College of the Arts. Since returning to Beijing in the late 1990s, he has maintained a diverse practice, which includes painting, sculpture and photography. The use of hand-built cameras introduces risk and accidents to Li Gang's work. In his photographs, instead of control and mastery, there is magic and mystery. The photographic darkroom was always a place of magic and mystery, where alchemy and science turned silver halides into pictures. Li Gang returns to these roots. • Breathing Space - Works from the CBus Collection of Australian Art - 2 July – 6 November 2011. Richard Wagner commented on its ‘indestructible beauty’ and Robert Schumann of its ‘floating Grecian grace:’ one of Mozart's most dramatic orchestral works, his 40th symphony is also one of his most cherished creations. It shares this Melbourne Symphony Orchestra program with Dvořák's heroically-scaled, hauntingly melodic cello concerto, featuring as soloist the MSO's own Nicholas Bochner. The heartfelt Adagio of Dvořák's concerto was inspired by the death of his beloved sister-in-law, and it is this glorious music which also dominates the concerto's poignant final minutes. Paul Fitzsimon: Conductor, Nicholas Bochner: Cello. Program: Dvořák Cello Concerto, Dall’Ongaro Perpetuum mobile, Mozart Symphony No.40. Formally of the Felice Brothers, and now a fully fledged solo Artist and published Author, Simone will be hitting Melbourne in September as he attends engagements at the Melbourne Writers Festival. Born in the Catskills Mountains, Simone's story is one to behold. At age 12 he suffered a brain aneurysm and after emergency surgery he had to relearn all his basic motor skills, and in 2011, he undertook emergency open-heart surgery which forced his last tour cancellation, but that's just the body. The mind, voice and soul have been working fine 8 so at 15, he was starting punk bands before turning his hand to poetry and writing, which lead to his first collection, The Picture Show, at age 22. Then, with brothers Ian and James he formed The Felice Brothers, which Simone stayed a part of for the recordings of Tonight at the Arizona, The Felice Brothers, and Yonder is the Clock. During this time, Simone also managed to publish his first short works of fiction, Goodbye Amelia, and Hail Mary Full of Hole. Moving onto a new musical group, he formed The Duke & The King with his old friend Bird. Recorded in a cabin in the Catskills Nothing Gold Can Stay hit the stores in 2009 being hailed as one of the most haunting and honest albums of the year. 2010's follow-up Long Live The Duke & The King has been similarly praised. Allen & Unwin will release Simone’s latest effort and his first novel, Black Jesus. Simone lives less than a mile from the creek-house he was born in, and travels his own country and abroad sharing his songs and stories and we can now all share in their majesty. We know this show will be a very special musical engagement. It has been our pleasure to have had Jordie Lane perform at Meeniyan in the past but not for a couple of years now. Jordie has been developing his craft and a devoted audience in the U.S. for some time now, but Jordie has returned home after this extended stint in the U.S. to release his second album, 'Blood Thinner'. With his unique finger-style guitar, blues harmonica, and a commanding voice that jumps from a Jimmie Rodgers yodel to a Springsteen-like roar, Jordie Lane is fast creating a rumble amongst not only Australia’s music fans but is gaining much respect from it’s songwriters too. Saturday 15th October SOLD OUT Okkervil River (USA) Support: Roller One. $45/$50 (Only a few tickets left) The poster kids of high concept alt-country, Texan six-piece Okkervil River can also lay claim to being amongst the most critically lauded indie bands of the past decade. This Austin-based outfit combine rambunctious country underpinnings with flecks of drunkenly melancholic rock, but their musical sorties often range into surprisingly lyrical and complex territories. Touring on the back of their sixth studio album, I Am Very Far, a magisterial assortment of paeans to the difficulties of being alive, Okkervil River return to Australia in typically raucous fashion, proving to be exuberant in loneliness and exultant in defeat. "All human life is teeming about in Sheff’s songs, which untangle the roots of Americana with sublime narratives and a diverse, musical heft. Fifty-one literate, intense minutes long, I Am Very Farisn’t very far short of magnificent." BBC (UK) Friday 4th November Joe Pug (USA), Jordie Lane, Henry Wagons $35/$40. Joe, Jordie and Henry have all performed at Meeniyan before and we have had many requests for them to return. Luckily we have the opportunity to present you with a very special one-off show: We have managed to get them to come to Meeniyan all on the same night and they will perform one set each. Joe Pug: Last November saw the first ever visit by Chicago born Artist, Joe Pug to Australia and to Meeniyan. He was introduced to audiences in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, and wowed them all. So much so, he has been asked back. Performing with his trusty guitar, harmonica and sweet and soulful vocal chords, Joe Pug takes you on a journey with a swag full of tunes from his acclaimed debut, 'Messenger', released last year on Shock. Jordie Lane: As mentioned above, Jordie is only back in Australia for a short time and so we have jumped at the chance to present him twice in 2 very different settings for you to enjoy before he takes off back to America. Henry Wagons: Henry is one of Australia's most entertaining solo shows involving one man and his acoustic guitar. "He has a wonderfully wicked, dark sense of humour, but is also capable of delivering truly beautiful songs.' Jeff Jenkins/The Age. Saturday 12th November John Hammond (USA) Support: Nick Charles $50/$55. Grammy winner and this year’s Blues Hall of Fame inductee John Hammond is visiting our shores! Also winning this year’s Blues Music Award for Acoustic Artist of the Year (as well as in 2003 and 2004), Best Acoustic Album in 2002 (for his Tom Waits-produced ‘Wicked Grin’), is arguably the best exponent of acoustic blues guitar in the world. His career spans nearly 50 years with over 30 album releases and an album score. Tom Waits called him “a great force of nature”, he’s earned the respect of many blues legends and he’s the only musician to boast having Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton in his band at the same time. Need I say more................................? Saturday 17th December An intimate evening with Colin Hay $40/$45. Colin Hay returns to Australia and will perform at Meeniyan as part of his Gathering Mercury Tour. There will be no support act on the night but 2 sets by Colin Hay with a selection of his many songs, both new and old, interspersed with Colin talking to the audience. As frontman and principle songwriter for eighties hit machine Men at Work, Colin Hay is responsible for one of the most identifiable sounds in pop music. He may be best known as the lead singer for Men At Work but he feels that his new album is the best he’s ever done. Inspired by the loss of his father, Gathering Mercury reveals Hay’s emotional depth and musical 9 diversity all the while captivating listeners with his usual optimism and quizzical, instantly recognizable voice. Colin will perform songs from his new album in a night of sidesplitting random comedy, as well as selections from his solo albums and fan favorites from the past.Hay is at the absolute peak of his craft. As a writer and vocalist, he has never been more masterful. "Hay is funnier than most stand-up comedians, so he'll split your sides and then drop a heartbreaking ditty on you." - The Houston Chronicle “Gathering Mercury, his 11th solo release, contains some of the finest songs he has ever written.” Tony Hillier, The Australian ● Tickets available from Lyrebird Bookings: Phone 5664 9239 or email [email protected] or from Gecko Studio Gallery - 15 Falls Rd, Fish Creek ph 5683 2481, Main Street Revelations - 31 Mains St, Foster , ph 5682 1381 or Bair Music - 52 Bair Street, Leongatha ph 5662 3466 IMPACT 7: Intersections & Counterpoints - International Multi-disciplinary Printmaking Conference 27-30 September 2011. www.impact7.org.au Impact 7: Intersections & Counterpoints will focus on the multiple identity of the print, exploring the cross-disciplinary nature of printmedia internationally and in the context of the Asia-Pacific region. Printmedia will be explored as a heterogeneous, diverse and all pervading aspect of contemporary culture. It aims to provide a platform in which practitioners and researchers can engage in a mutually productive exchange. Media identified by the conference will include but not be limited to: Printmaking, Photography, Graphic Design, Architecture, Drawing, The Artist’s Book, Text, Animation, Film and Digital Media, Jewellery and Metalsmith, Glass, Ceramic and Textile. Winery of the month - Clair de Lune Vineyard was established in 1997 and is nestled in the rolling hills of the Strzelecki Ranges, South Gippsland. The 12ha property has a 4ha vineyard with three distinctive soil types, variation and aspects which add to the diversity, character and complexity of their wines. Winemaker Brian Gaffy is not an interventionalist and wants his wines to reflect the originality of his terroir at Clair de Lune. To achieve this he works extremely hard in the vineyard, believing that the creation of a healthy vineyard will in turn produce magnificent fruit. Their wines are not industrial in texture or style but display a uniqueness of flavour and character that embodies the magic of their terroir. All wines are hand-crafted using traditional winemaking techniques, and grapes are gently hand pressed to ensure maximum flavour and wine quality. At Moo’s in September we are showcasing these two favourites from Clair de Lune Vineyard:2009 Oaked Chardonnay - cool climate in style, stylish with vibrant pear/apple and grapefruit qualities. Matured in both old and new French oak 2009 Pinot Noir - an attractive, deep, cherry-coloured wine matured in French oak offering soft tannins, savoury fruit and spice flavours, with a complex mouth feel and long after-taste. Dinner with winemaker Brian Gaffy at Moo’s on Saturday 24th September at 7.00pm 3 course dinner including wine tasting $70 per person, bookings essential. Artist of the month - Shirley O’Donnell is a local artist and valued Moo’s customer! She was born and brought up in South Africa and always knew she had a love of art. She is very worldly, having worked and travelled in Europe and England which is where she met her Australian husband. After settling here and raising two children Shirley finally realised her dream and started drawing classes, “I had found my great love!” Shirley has worked in life drawing, portraiture, watercolour, sculpture and nowadays mosaics and craft of all sorts, “I am happiest always making something!” Shirley has adorned our walls with some lovely pastels, come and enjoy. 89 Whitelaw St, Meeniyan.
