There’s still time to register for the March 20 Trustee Conference.
As an Intermountain trustee, you’re invited to attend the 2015 Intermountain
Healthcare Trustee Conference, scheduled for March 20 at the Little America Hotel in
Salt Lake City. Nine presentations are planned by trustees and senior leaders, and there
will also be a mini health fair offering information on prevention and wellness topics.
The conference provides a perspective on the challenges and opportunities we’ll face
in 2015 and helps board members govern Intermountain more effectively.
There’s still time to register by contacting Delinda Gordon in Intermountain’s Travel
Services at 801-442-3931 or at [email protected].

Utah’s 2015 legislative session concludes.
Bill Barnes of Intermountain’s Government Relations office provides the following
update at the conclusion of the 2015 Utah legislative session:
The 2015 session ended on March 12, and the big issue for healthcare was what to do,
if anything, about Medicaid expansion. The governor, the House, and the Senate were
not able to come to an agreement about how to expand Medicaid to serve the lowerincome residents of the state, and no bill passed both houses. The governor and
legislative leadership announced a plan to keep working on the issue, with the hope

that they can come to an agreement and have a summer
special legislative session to
deal with it. The governor is still expressing confidence that they will come up with an
agreement to expand Medicaid “in some form.”

Also on Medicaid: SB 98, by Sen. Stuart Adams, establishes a framework for state
budgeting and appropriations for Utah’s Medicaid Accountable Care Organizations.
If you would like more information about any of the issues discussed in the legislative
session, you can always go to the legislature’s website at www.le.utah.gov.
Trustees with questions about these or other issues may contact Bill Barnes at
[email protected].
Trustees are also invited to subscribe to the Intermountain Health Policy
Network. In an effort to support trustees and employees who are interested in
receiving legislative updates—as well as information about how to become more
involved—Intermountain has created a subscription service called the Intermountain
Health Policy Network. Those who subscribe receive periodic emails concerning
pressing issues and information about how to contact appropriate officials. You may
subscribe to this network here.
Participation in the network is strictly voluntary and informational. Intermountain
Healthcare neither endorses nor opposes any political candidate or party.

Truven Health Analytics has released its list of the “100 Top Hospitals” for 2015, and
five Intermountain Healthcare hospitals were named to the list. Included are
McKay-Dee Hospital, LDS Hospital, Logan Regional Hospital, Riverton Hospital, and
Valley View Medical Center.
Only one other health system in the U.S. had five hospitals recognized.
The Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals study asserts it is “the most comprehensive,
rigorous study of its kind, incorporating public data; proprietary, risk-adjusted and
peer-reviewed methodologies; and key performance metrics to arrive at an objective
balanced scorecard measuring current performance and long-term improvement. It
evaluates performance in 11 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety;
average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical
standards of care; and post-discharge mortality and readmissions rates for acute
myocardial infarction (heart attack).
The 100 Top Hospitals are not ranked, but are listed alphabetically in one of five
categories: Major Teaching Hospitals (15 hospitals), Teaching Hospitals (25), Large
Community Hospitals (20), Medium Community Hospitals (20), and Small
Community Hospitals (20).

Blog: The imperative to transform healthcare.
Intermountain is an active voice in the national and
international conversation about transforming healthcare.
Recently, Joe Mott, Intermountain’s Vice President of
Healthcare Transformation, published an article in
Intermountain’s blog network that posed the question,
“Should healthcare organizations transform?” (Click here
to read the blog post.)
He said any organization that’s unsure about the question
should look at its mission statement. “Why does your
organization exist? After spending an afternoon pondering that question, the direction
you should pursue should be readily apparent,” Mott said. “But from comments I’ve
heard from executives across the country, not everyone has yet spent an afternoon
considering their mission.”
Once an organization decides to transform, they must do it in the right way. “Real
transformation is about fundamental change,” said Mott. “It’s not incremental and it’s
not subtle. It’s big. . . . It will take a fundamental change in how we approach the
delivery of healthcare with a true commitment to value for those we serve.”
