Students will hear “responsibility” reminders and songs each day on BBTV. They will have the opportunity to participate in classroom activities as well. These activities will center on the idea that responsibility is: *Being accountable for your action and words *Completing work both in and out of school *Making good choices each day without an adult reminding you “The right thing to do and the hard thing to do are usually the same.” ― Steve Maraboli 2015-16 CLASS LISTS & ROOM REQUESTS Dear BBES Parents/Guardians: Each spring our staff diligently works on creating class lists for the following school year. We are dedicated to taking the time necessary to reach the following goals: Students placed in classrooms where a teacher’s strength will provide the best opportunity for academic success. Classrooms that have a balance of students at, above and below grade level. Classrooms that have a balance of girls and boys. Classrooms that are balanced in numbers. Classrooms that purposefully separate groups of students with a past history of conflict. Class lists are made consulting the current year teachers, the past year teachers, specialists and special education teachers. Current grade level teachers consider a student’s strengths, needs and personality characteristics when creating the classes for the upcoming school year. If a parent feels there are needs we are not aware of they may explain them, in writing, by April 30, 2015. Verbal requests will not be considered and requests made for particular teachers may not be valid as changes in summer are sure to occur. We ask that you utilize the “Classroom Environment Description Form” for these requests. You can obtain this form in our school office or on our school website http://internal.masd.k12.wi.us/cms/bbes/bbes-classroomenvironmentrequest.pdf. If you choose to make a request, we ask that parents request a particular environment or set of teacher strengths which allows a good match to be made. If you have questions, please contact me at [email protected] . A WHALE OF A THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this spring’s Book Fair “Under the Sea” a jaw-some success! With total sales over $9,200, the Book Fair earned our school more than $2,300 in cash, which will help pay for new books, online book subscriptions, events such as Family Reading Night and One School, One Book as well as other library activities. The fair also earned $920 in Scholastic dollars, redeemable for Scholastic books and other library resources. In addition, through lollipop tree sales and customer donations to Scholastic’s All for Books program, we were able to select almost $200 in books from the fair. For each dollar raised, Scholastic donates one book to nonprofit organizations that help families in need, so we also put nearly 200 books into the hands of kids across the country! The Book Fair Committee truly appreciates the adult and student volunteers who greeted and signed in visitors, paraded around in costumes, ran registers, bagged books, rolled posters, straightened shelves and helped customers. In addition to committee members, volunteers included: BBES Student Council Maureen Basting Kelly Bruhn Nicole Craig Mandy Haseman Dawn Henkhaus James Hewitt Kristy Santos Brenda Spiegel Amy Steinhauer Lauri Sweetman Kristin Wilber Debbie Young We’d like to give a special shout-out to retiring committee members Stacey Kelly and Kimberly Tran for the many hours they’ve devoted to BBES book fairs over the years. We will miss their great ideas and enthusiasm this fall when their sixth-graders move on to middle school. —The Book Fair Committee: Carrie Campanelli, Alicia DeLaney, Samantha Hietala, Julie Kastello, Stacey Kelly, Nicole Munson, Lisa Pritzlaff and Kimberly Tran -6- Attention: Parent/Guardian of 5th Grade Students Mukwonago Area School District Human Growth & Development Presentation Parent Information Meeting Date: Wednesday, April 15th, 2015 Time: 7pm - 8pm Location: Park View Middle School Library Presenter: Mukwonago School District Nurse Your child is about to study an important lesson on the early stages of puberty, which many fifth-graders are beginning to experience. One way to ensure that they are developing to their full potential is to encourage them to play. Scientific research has shown that playtime stimulates children’s brains and helps them develop essential skills. By allowing them to express their creativity and use their imaginations, we are helping them build healthy brain architecture. It’s also important for you to play with your children! Get down on the floor and become a part of their world for a while. Playing helps build warm relationships and strong attachments among families. Playtime with adults encourages vocabulary development and communication skills, so that children can better express their thoughts and feelings. They will learn social interaction, like how to take turns and share. And your children will feel important, which builds self-worth and confidence. Most importantly, shared playtime can be fun! Find out how much you can learn from your children, take a break from the stress of everyday life, and know that you are investing in your children’s future. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. As part of activities to recognize and support community efforts that help protect children, pinwheel gardens will be put up around the country. Here’s a Pinwheel Protector Activity you can participate in with your child. Pinwheel Wind Collector Materials Needed: A push pin, a square piece of construction paper (about 8.5” by 8.5”), a sharpened pencil with an eraser, and scissors. Procedure: 1. Lay the square paper flat on a table and draw a line diagonally from each corner to the opposite corner. 2. Mark the center of the square where the two lines cross and punch a small hole through it with a pencil tip. 3. Next, cut along each line stopping about an inch from the hole in the center of the square. 4. Take the pin and punch a hole in the top left corner of each of the four flaps. (No two holes should be next to each other.) 5. Pick up a flap at a punched corner and carefully curve it over toward the center hole, securing it with a pin. 6. Repeat this with the other flaps. 7. When all four flaps are held by the pin, carefully lift the paper without letting the flaps unfurl. 8. Lay the pencil flat on a table and carefully push the point of the push pin into the side of the eraser. 9. Now your pinwheel is complete and ready to go! Pick up the pinwheel near the pencil point and let it catch the wind. To connect this further to Child Abuse Prevention Month, you could ask your child to write the names of the adults in your child’s life that make them feel safe on the flaps of the pinwheel.
