Call for Nominations
Missouri State University Study Away Advisory Committee (SAAC) seeks to recognize
outstanding faculty members who foster cultural competence and community
engagement in fulfillment of the University’s Public Affairs Mission. Short-term study
away programs are defined as credit-offering programs that are eight weeks or less.
There are two Study Away Awards for Excellence in Short-Term Study Away
Programming. The first award recognizes faculty members whose programs directly
address the recognition and respect of multiple perspectives and cultures, i.e., cultural
competence.
The second award recognizes faculty members whose programs enable students to
participate in an organized service activity that meets reciprocally identifed
community needs, i.e., community engagement.
For each award, please consider the criteria listed on page 2.
Award Features
•The award will be presented at the All Faculty Recogni on Recep on on May 5, 2015
• The recipient will receive a trophy, along with permanent recogni on on a plaque in the Study
Away Programs Office
• The recipient will receive $1,500 in professional development funds
• The recipient will par cipate in campus ac vi es promo ng excellence in short-term study

Award Criteria
Cultural Competence Award
Recognizes faculty
members whose
programs directly
address the recognition
and respect of multiple
perspectives and
cultures
Did the faculty member’s program promote cultural awareness of self and others by
describing beliefs, perspectives, and behaviors acquired through cultural immersion in
different societies? Did the program require students to self-evaluate their own cultural
norms in relation to cultural norms on-site?
Did the faculty member examine and articulate both differences and similarities
between the students’ native cultural practices and the host site cultural practices?
Did the faculty member encourage belief in the importance of interaction with
people of diverse cultures and backgrounds?
Did the faculty member model respectful consideration of different cultural
viewpoints, and encourage students to develop an awareness of difference that
may be integrated into individual and culturally-developed belief systems?

Community Engagement Award
Did the faculty member’s program include an organized service activity that met a
reciprocally identified community need?
Did the faculty member enable the group to integrate their academic knowledge by
making relevant connections from academics to personal and civic participation
in the host community?
Did the faculty member facilitate reflection on the service activity in such a way to
enable students to further understand course content, a broader appreciation of
the discipline, and an enhanced sense of personal values and civic responsibility?
Did the faculty member challenge students to clarify and reconsider their role as
citizens?

Nomination Procedure
Nominee Names and Letters of Recommendation due October 24, 2014
Complete the simple Nomination Form (attached) and a letter of recommendation for
each nominee. Letters of recommendation should reflect the criteria listed on page 2 of this
packet. Submit nominations to Elizabeth Strong, Director of Study Away Programs (contact
information below).
Department Head & Dean Endorsements due December 5, 2014
Study Away Programs will contact each nominee’s department head and dean to solicit
an endorsement, based upon the letter of recommendation. The endorsement will include a
statement indicating how the short-term study away program nominee exemplifies
excellence in fulfilling the cultural competence or community engagement aspect of the
University’s Public Affairs Mission.

Do you know someone who has demonstrated excellence in developing and leading
a short-term study away program?
The Missouri State Study Away Advisory Committee (SAAC) seeks to recognize outstanding
faculty members who foster cultural competence and community engagement in
fulfillment of the University’s Public Affairs Mission.
Any faculty member who has led a short-term study away program (defined as a creditoffering program of eight weeks or less) is eligible to be nominated for these awards.
