More and more businesses are recognizing the added value that women bring to the workplace. Indeed, studies have shown that, globally, for several decades, the increased presence of women in business has been the strongest driver of growth and ability to compete. However, even though the percentage of women in senior management positions has increased in the past 20 years, statistics show that women are still greatly under-represented in top management and on boards of directors. The women who have made it into senior executive jobs will tell you that the road to these professional heights may be long and arduous, but that those who make it all share one crucial quality : ambition! At TC Transcontinental, we’re lucky to be able to work alongside women who have demonstrated the ability to shine at the highest levels. We’d like to introduce you to several who inspire us with their achievements. PROFILE SPECIAL ISSUE YEARS OF SERVICE ON THE MOVE DID YOU KNOW ? TC BREAK VOX POP 07 08 10 12 13 19 21 23 02 Interview with Isabelle Marcoux Isabelle joined TC Transcontinental in 1997. Her first position was Director of Mergers and Acquisitions; she was then appointed Vice President, Corporate Development, and then Vice Chair of the Board of Directors. During those years and today as well, her career has been driven by her ambition, which eventually led to her taking of the reins of the company as Chair of the Board of Directors in 2012. “I always wanted to set the bar higher and take my place in the business world,” she says. Today, she is involved in L’effet A project because she wants to inspire other women to break through the glass ceiling and create a pool of women who are qualified for senior management positions. What does ambition mean for you? Ambition means having the courage to make tough decisions and take risks, to jump without a parachute. I also define ambition as the ability to see the bigger picture. Ambition means you must move outside your comfort zone, be passionate and put in a lot of work. As Chair of the Board of Transcontinental Inc., my ambition is to grow our company and to create wealth, both as an individual and for the community. What do women bring to an organization? Women have excellent analytical skills and a consensus-building approach to problem solving. I’m not saying men don’t have these qualities, but I think it’s more apparent among women. And it’s normal and fair to have representation from both male and female perspectives in an organization. And, in your opinion, what keeps women from advancing within an organization? I think that in some areas we underestimate ourselves. When we’re offered a promotion, we wonder if we can handle it, if we’re ready, if we have everything we need to move up a level. It’s a hindrance. Instead, we should say to ourselves: “If they’ve offered it to me, it’s because I can handle the challenge.” The more we see women in corporate leadership positions, the more models there will be to inspire young women. L’effet A What is the biggest challenge you’ve encountered in your career? Since January 30, 2015, Isabelle Marcoux has been involved in a new web series called L’effet A, an innovative show whose mission is to offer women I’d say that the most ambitious decision I made in my career was when, at the tools and practical advice to help them drive their careers to new heights. age of 35, I joined the board of directors of Georges Weston Limited. It was a major corporation with revenues of more than $30 billion at the time, and was Five dynamic women, Sophie Brochu (Gaz Metro), Isabelle Hudon (Sun owned by one of the leading families in Canada. These steps were a great help in preparing me to perform the functions I carry out “I want women today. to feel they have the For L’effet A, you decided to put forward the Women in Print program, why? right to be ambitious and to express that ambition so they can rise to the highest levels in business.” - Isabelle Marcoux The company’s Women in Print program has been very successful and has resulted in a number of positive outcomes for our female managers, particularly in the Printing Sector, which is identified with men. This year we are holding our third annual national Women in Print conference, and, to our delight, several regional groups have been set up along the way. It’s important to encourage women to take centre stage and be ambitious, and Women in Print provides them with a great set of tools to help them take their careers up a notch. I wanted to share this exciting project, initiated by Marian Kerr, with the public so that other businesses would be inspired to do the same in their organizations. It’s also a fantastic showcase for our Corporation in terms of demonstrating our support for a diverse workplace. To follow Isabelle and her fellow executives and learn more about their projects, you can visit the L’effet A website (www.effet-a.com) until May 15. 03 Géraldine Martin Associate Publisher and Editor in Chief Les Affaires Group Her career path Géraldine’s career with TC Transcontinental began when Jean-Paul Gagné offered her a position as a freelancer at Journal Les Affaires, her first job after she immigrated here 15 years ago. She subsequently worked for 10 years as a journalist with other media outfits, including Radio-Canada and the Journal de Montréal. In 2009, the offer of a management position brought her back to TC Media. From journalist, she became content manager for the Investir supplement of Journal Les Affaires. A year later, she was director for the lesaffaires.com website, and soon became managing editor for Journal Les Affaires. More recently, she was offered the position of associate publisher and editor-in-chief, which she has held for the past two years. Géraldine’s rapid rise through the ranks shows management’s confidence in her. Her challenges In the past few years, her biggest challenge has been leading a traditional media into the digital era, with all the work that entails : from changing the culture within teams to technology issues, not to mention the importance of keeping readership levels up and being especially creative for advertisers. And the work’s not over yet ! Céline Brillant Vice President, Information Technology Project Management Office, Customer Relations and Quality Her career path Céline started working at TC Transcontinental in 2007. Over the course of her career she has taken on many different responsibilities that have always taught her a little bit more about the company and its departments. She has been in charge of information security, the PeopleSoft environment, the IT department of the Administrative Services Centre, and all IT projects, including customer relations, governance and quality assurance. In 2011, her ambition and extensive IT experience resulted in her being appointed Vice President, Information Technology. Her proudest achievement Géraldine is particularly proud of how successful Les Affaires is with businesspeople, despite the ups and downs of the media industry. The content strategy, special projects, revenue diversification and strict cost controls have rejuvenated Les Affaires and made it a profitable brand. She is proud of the transformation in the Group as a whole, a success which she attributes to the collaborative approach among all the teams, including management, and she is particularly proud of Les Affaires Events, which has been a real growth lever in recent years for the Les Affaires brand. Her message to women “Male or female, we all have the opportunity to be entrepreneurs, even within a large corporation. It takes good ideas, dedicated teams and courage. The courage to defend your ideas even if some people don’t agree with you. The courage to occasionally try a project that goes against the rules and is a little different. The courage to always be authentic with others, whether they are management, peers, employees, customers or partners. Being authentic means being real, being yourself, being spontaneous. All this builds strong and winning relationships.” Her challenges In her new position, Céline had to become familiar with all the areas of expertise in information technology in order to manage everything in the best way possible. Her leadership skills and confidence in her own abilities helped her find her place in the management team, and make her known to business units and other departments in the company. Her goal? To learn more about their operations, priorities and vision, so her team could help them grow and develop. Her proudest achievement The confidence placed in her, as well as the collaboration and teamwork she enjoys with skilled and interesting employees. She notes also that she is particularly proud of the motivation and participation of stakeholders when significant changes are being rolled out within the company. Her message to women “Don’t be shy about doing new activities, moving into new areas and getting out of your comfort zone to take on challenges. Develop your network, keep in touch with others in your area of expertise and listen to clients and the changes they are dealing with.” 04 Ozy Camacho Publisher, Investment Group Her career path Ozy had already been Vice President with Investment Executive for five years when TC Transcontinental acquired that newspaper in 1999. Prior to that, Ozy had worked for Info Globe, which was the Globe and Mail’s online division. Over the next 13 years, Ozy headed the Investment Group sales team, helping to maintain the newspaper’s remarkable profitability in an increasingly challenging marketplace. In 2013, Ozy was offered the position of publisher of the Investment Group. That new position not only increased her accountability on the sales side ; it added to her mandate an obligation to lead and represent the editorial perspective. In this new position, Ozy has managed to gain the confidence of both the sales team and the editorial teams at Investment Executive and Finance et Investissement, while directing the vision and the future of the Investment Group. Her challenges The world of publishing and advertising has changed radically over the past several years. Ozy and her team have had to work hard to keep their rates competitive for their clients and showcase the advantages of working with a top-quality editorial medium. Her proudest achievement Among her many achievements, Ozy is most proud of the launch of Finance et Investissement. When Montreal-based TC Media bought Toronto-based Investment Executive, the owner identified the opportunity to create a Frenchlanguage counterpart to serve the Quebec financial services sector. Ozy was instrumental in developing the business model for the new project. Just five months later, in October 1999, the first issue of Finance et Investissement was on the newsstands. The publication was profitable from the beginning and has built a solid reputation in the industry. Her message to women “Get to know your manager and how he or she thinks and works, so that you can prepare for your meetings. You won’t always get what you want, but at least you will have a better chance of convincing your boss if you are able to get your thoughts and viewpoints across in a manner that he or she is accustomed to.” Catherine Milne Vice President, Human Resources, TC Transcontinental Printing Her career path Catherine Milne joined TC Transcontinental in 2008 as Human Resources Director for the Marketing Products Sector. Six years later, her leadership abilities earned her the position of VP Human Resources for the Printing Sector, which now has about 4,500 employees in 24 business units across Canada and the United States. Her message to women “Be willing to take risks and seize opportunities. Don’t be afraid to accept jobs, projects or assignments that may be risky or have an unclear future ; they’ll help you grow and build your credibility.” Her challenges To fulfill her new responsibilities, Catherine had to not only expand her knowledge of the printing industry and manufacturing, she also had to figure out how to support an organization going through transformation. In a constantly evolving industry, Catherine and the human resources team have been faced with a big challenge: to successfully keep the best people with the company, maintain and increase employee engagement and promote the TC Transcontinental brand as a solid enterprise that has survived challenging economic times and will continue to succeed. Over the past several years, the HR team has dealt with a number of challenges, including technological change, strong competition for the best talent, changes in pension plans and benefits, and the automation of HR functions. But Catherine’s keen sense of strategy and determination have allowed her to handle each challenge as it arose and overcome all obstacles. Her proudest achievement Successfully developing key relationships in an organization going through a major transformation and becoming an important and influential member of the management team. 05 During the TC Transcontinental Health and Wellness Month... The past months have seen a number of organizational changes as well as acquisitions and divestitures. Given this reality, many of our colleagues have agreed to change their roles, take on new responsibilities or head new teams. Their dynamic input and invaluable experience will help us continue the transformation of our organization. In addition, new employees have joined TC Transcontinental. of the market and making new acquisitions. We are counting on our Mergers and Acquisitions team to identify companies that could, in the short- or medium-term, join the TC Transcontinental family. In the Media Sector, the issues are quite different. The momentum of the shift to digital obliges us to drive our content to new platforms in order to attract the younger audiences who prefer digital devices, and thus to offer our advertisers the tools they need to reach their target consumers. Here again, we must optimize our processes and make the right moves for the right clients. My sense now is that we have the right people, in the right places, at the right time to successfully complete our 2015 Action Plan. We’re relying on the recent creation of the Local and Interactive Marketing Solutions Group, which is now comprised of our designers, developers and sales reps, to develop solutions that meet the needs of our national retailers and local merchants. 2015 Action Plan Our 2015 Action Plan reflects our need to grow and diversify while ensuring that the changes we introduce are suited to the realities of our sectors, groups and divisions. In our printing operations, we want to ramp up our transformation through innovation and the revitalization of our products and services, and ensure that our manufacturing processes are as efficient as possible. Our business units are doing an excellent job at maintaining steady profitability despite a slight drop in sales. In the packaging division set up over the past year, we are concentrating on consolidating our new operations. This means greater emphasis on organic sales growth, strengthening our sales force, gaining a better understanding Lastly, our operational support teams (Finance, HR, Communications, Legal and IT) have been tasked with creating and maintaining a work environment that helps us develop, while keeping all our employees informed, engaged, motivated and healthy. It’s up to all of us to make sure our transformation takes place in a workplace where fun, enthusiasm and good humour predominate. A FRESH TWIST ON DESIGN AND CONTENT FOR OUR TC MEDIA ATLANTIC AND SASKATCHEWAN NEWSPAPERS We are very proud to announce that we are bringing a fresh new look and newspaper redesign to our readers and advertisers across our communities in Atlantic Provinces and Saskatchewan. We felt that it was time to celebrate boldness – in ourselves and to reflect our readers. Our rebranding made its debut in Newfoundland and Labrador in mid-February with The Telegram and The Western Star, and all our weeklies across the province. The second wave of the redesign was rolled-out in several other communities in March, including our dailies in Sasktachewan and Prince Edward Island, as well as our papers in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Other waves should follow. They say that “Orange is the New Black”. Well orange is the new colour for the front pages of all our dailies*. And while it’s boldly celebrated in our mastheads, we made sure to preserve the iconic and familiar brands of our newspaper titles. Several weeklies have also been revamped from top to bottom, using a blue color palette. These products now have a sharp new design with a more dynamic, streamlined presentation, and most of them boast an easier-to-handle narrower page size. The redesign, however, is more than skin-deep ; it’s anchored in words and content, in what matters to our communities. We have revisited our story-telling approach to transform the way our content is portrayed, to tell each tale better, for a more compelling read, both in print and online. We are the local news leader in our different markets and this redesign retierates our commitment to providing our readers and advertisers with high-quality local newspapers. Thank you to the redesign committee, for your focus and hard work, and congratulations to everyone who contributed to this project. The result is outstanding ! * With the exception of the Journal Pioneer, in PEI. JOBGO.CA OFFERS AN INNOVATIVE RECRUITING SOLUTION : VIDEO INTERVIEWING JobGO.ca is proud to have launched, on February 4, an innovative online video interview solution that complements the services it already offers, slashes recruiting time for employers and takes scheduling out of the process. New to Quebec, the platform is easy to use, available online and on mobile, and is compatible with most ATS systems. Offered in English and 13 other languages, the platform allows selected candidates to choose a time when it’s convenient for them to answer the employer’s interview questions. “With this simple and easy platform, an employer can receive individual video interviews from multiple applicants, and there are no scheduling or 08 travel constraints,” says Nancy Talbot, Product Director for JobGO.ca. “It’s a complete and flexible solution that lets employers contact candidates who may already be employed, or have atypical hours, or be geographically distant, while cutting the time and cost of the selection process.” The solution is powered by Sonru, a European company that provides online video interview solutions and has signed an agreement with JobGO.ca. Congratulations to the team JobGO.ca ! The strategic plan was consolidated with a two-day meeting in February, attended by an even larger number of TC Media leaders and experts. It was also the perfect opportunity to officially name and launch the LocalMotion project. A VITAL PROJECT FOR TC MEDIA Local business is core to TC Media’s strategy. Over the past few years, we have invested in these operations with new product launches, system improvements, and several acquisitions to bolster our portfolio and solidify our presence in our markets. Our goal has always been and still is to better meet the evolving needs of our audiences and clients. The media industry is in a period of rapid change: audiences are migrating to digital media and advertisers are following them. While the local market is continuing to evolve, new opportunities are opening up for companies that position themselves as a single source for media and marketing solutions. With this reality in mind, the TC Media Senior Management Team initiated a strategic planning process and conducted an in-depth analysis to deliver a robust local business strategic plan for 2015-2016. The LocalMotion project, spearheaded by Ted Markle, is all about positioning TC Media as the one-stop-shop and local media partner of choice for SMBs. We aim to capture the growth in SMB spend in digital media and marketing services, while maintaining our local customer base. Our strategies will be set in motion as part of a concerted and coordinated effort. Six task forces are in charge of developing action plans to implement the project. Three task forces are directly aligned with our three strategic poles : ► Offering more relevant and efficient local media content ► Developing a comprehensive & competitive SMB offering ► Defining a tailored go-to-market approach Three additional task forces are supporting the implementation from an operational, financial and communication standpoint. Over the coming months, as we set our strategies in motion, we will keep you informed of our progress. The Task Forces ► Media Portfolio led by Jean-Pascal Beaupré ► SMB Offering led by Laurent Elkaim ► Go-to-Market led by Jules Roux ► Operations led by Pascale Fortin ► Finance led by Julie Tardif ► Communication and Change Management led by Katherine Chartrand and Mélissa Barrett AUTOGO.CA, PROUD PARTNER OF THE TEST DRIVE FAVOURITES AT THE 2015 MONTREAL AUTO SHOW AutoGo.ca proudly teamed up with the 2015 Montreal Auto Show this year as the official partner for the Test Drive Favourites. Throughout the show, from January 16-25, AutoGo.ca made 11 cars available to the public for test drives in the streets of Old Montreal. AutoGo.ca also held a contest offering 20 lucky winners an exclusive tour of the show before it opened to the public. The 11 test-drive cars were selected through a contest on the 2015 Auto Show Facebook page, in which the public could choose from three models put forward by each of the participating car manufacturers. Visitors to the car show were then able to test drive eleven 2015 models. For the occasion, Marc Bouchard, Editor in chief of AutoGo.ca, prepared a test drive sheet for each model specifically for the event. A car lover, Michel Langis drove the Scion FR-S in the Montreal Auto Show Test Drives. 09 WHAT’S NEW AT TC TRANSCONTINENTAL PRINTING ? A TIME OF CHANGE FOR COMMERCIAL PRINTING For the past several years, the printing industry has been in continual transformation, which has created strongpressures due to declining demand in some niches, including commercial printing. Given this reality, TC Transcontinental Printing is facing situations where its facilities are not being used to their full capacity. “By grouping the operations of these two business units (Ross-Ellis and TAD) under one roof, we’ll become more efficient, remain the leader in direct marketing in Quebec and provide solutions that are entirely designed and produced in-house,” says Philippe Mayrand, General Manager of Transcontinental Ross-Ellis. “Our aim is to position this operational unit as one of the key players in high-end cardboard packaging products for the commercial and entertainment markets.” Recent analyses of the situation made it clear that some printing operations had to be reorganized. This reorganization involved : “This is a major project that will offset the declines in the web-press publishing and commercial printing market. It will also make it possible for Transcontinental Interweb to diversify its offering and provide publishing clients with innovative inserts and products that are all produced in-house,” says Normand Préville, General Manager of Transcontinental Interweb. ► grouping all of Transcontinental Acme Direct’s (TAD) activities involving the sheetfed printing of marketing products, as well as its digital departments and direct marketing (inserting) activities, at Transcontinental Ross-Ellis ; ► the transfer of the responsibility for promotional-insert overprinting from TAD to Fulfillment at Transcontinental O’Keefe Montreal ; ► the transfer of TAD’s web press print orders to Transcontinental Interweb. TRANSCONTINENTAL TRANSMAG STANDS OUT To reduce the cost of managing hazardous materials, Transcontinental Transmag recently started a project to reuse its waste fountain solution. Fountain solution is used to repel ink from any area other than the printable areas of the plate. Transmag installed an in-house filtering system that prevents the production of hazardous materials when the ink fountain is being cleaned. All it takes is the addition of a cleaning product, followed by a quick filtration, and the 10 The transfer of TAD’s web press printing operations to Transcontinental Interweb, which will be completed by December 2015, will involve moving web-press inline finishing equipment, to ensure that we can continue to offer innovative direct marketing products that are finished right on the press. Apart from the transfer of a limited number of print jobs, these recent changes should not affect the commercial printing activities of the other plants in the network (namely Transcontinental Québec, Transcontinental Interglobe, Transcontinental Aurora/Markham and Transcontinental Dartmouth). If you have any questions about these changes, please talk to your manager. waste fountain solution can be used again and is just as effective. After a few months, the results are quite impressive : ► about a 40% decrease in the cost and volume of hazardous materials sent for disposal ► a 40% decrease in purchases of new fountain solution All of which proves that an environmentally friendly approach and cost-savings can go hand in hand ! Well-deserved recognition ! Every year, the selection committee evaluates the projects submitted to see how well they meet the program objectives, and then awards three $1,000 “Recognition” prizes to the top projects. Two “Distinction” awards are also given out in the following categories : ► “Maintaining Results,” which goes to a plant that has maintained good results in HS&W audits, frequency indicators and severity indicators. ► “Transformation,” which is awarded to a plant that has shown a significant improvement in HS&W results over the past year. Each of these two prizes comes with $2,000 ; part of this amount is allocated to the recognition of the employees involved in the projects. The Big Top Program was introduced in 2005 to recognize the Printing Sector’s best practices in health, safety and wellness (HS&W) every year. Program objectives Lastly, the jury may give out a “Favourite” Award and a “Special Mention” to a project that they consider worthy of interest. The prizes for the 2014 projects will be awarded at the 2015 HR Forum on April 29, 2015. Good luck everyone ! ► Make employees aware of the need for prevention Kudos to the Transcontinental Ross-Ellis graphic design team for creating the new logo for the Big Top Program! ► Improve HS&W management ► Improve HS&W results Nadia Ridolfi, HR Coordinator at Transcontinental Transmag and sponsor of the Big Top Program, says that the winning formula for HS&W is innovation, communication and leadership. NEW CONTENT ON THE COMPANY WEBSITE Printing Division Packaging Division The Printing Sector’s marketing team recently added a brand-new section called Print Essentials to the Expertise part of the corporate website. The new content is designed to reach out to existing and prospective customers, to help them understand the technical options available to them and how best to set up new printing projects. For its part, the marketing team at the TC Transcontinental Packaging Division has just created a new website section for our new specialty in flexible packaging. In addition to demystifying the printing process—from sending digital files to the production of the finished product—the section provides a general lexicon and technical vocabulary, and clearly explains the key elements of printing (papers, printing formats, colour, graphic production chain, etc.). Print Essentials : Expertise/Thought Leadership/Print Essentials The new content highlights our competitive advantages, which are based on the full set of prepress services offered by Transcontinental Optium in Aurora, the extensive experience of Transcontinental Capri with cheese manufacturers, and the all-important emphasis on cleanliness at every stage of the manufacturing process. Each team chose five ideas ; out of those five, one was chosen and then submitted to a checkpoint to make sure it hadn’t already been developed elsewhere in the organization. The first steps have been completed ! Over 200 employees in Printing Division business units are getting actively involved in the 2015 Innovation in Action as participants, facilitators, team mentors and jury members. To date, all the scheduled activities have gone very well. The 19 facilitators responsible for supporting the 25 teams and their 175 members have all taken their training sessions. The veterans were updated on what’s new in 2015, and the recruits were instructed in facilitation techniques in an innovation context. Once that step is completed, the teams will flesh out their main idea in a second workshop, and prepare their presentation for the Selection Event in May. The teams have until April 30 to submit a detailed description of their idea for this decisive event. For more information, visit the Innovation page under the My Company tab on the intranet. Good luck everyone ! The brainstorming session led to very fruitful discussions among the teams participating in the 2015 Innovation in Action. The Transcontinental Transmag team is a good example here. New this year ! Each team has been assigned a mentor from the SLC (Sector Leadership Committee). The role of the 14 mentors is to help the teams develop their ideas by sharing their extensive knowledge and solid experience of printing. Note that the team mentors are given special training on how to be mentors specifically for Innovation in Action. 19 LES AFFAIRES EVENTS : UNIQUE IN QUEBEC Do you know Les Affaires Events ? This jewel of a service offered by Les Affaires Group is a brilliant and unique concept in Quebec that was introduced in 2007 and has grown in popularity ever since. Les Affaires Events are primarily seminars for professionals and business people on a wide range of topics and issues, mainly in human resources, marketing and communications. The events also address industry issues such as the development of the North and natural resources, energy policy for Quebec, and manufacturing. The seminars provide an excellent opportunity to meet and network with experts and leaders in different segments in an atmosphere that promotes discussion, debate and the sharing of best practices through case studies. For Les Affaires Group, the events are a platform that complements the material it already provides the business community through its print publication, website and iPad app. The enhanced material in the seminars provides these communities with very practical and value-added information that speaks to their concerns. The events take different forms depending on the topic being addressed : they may be presentations of case studies based on very concrete management issues ; or Rendez-vous, offered to highly targeted audiences ; or webinars and webcasts. Overall, the Group organizes about 50 events every year. What makes Les Affaires Events stand out from its competitors ? It’s the upstream research they do in the different business communities so that they can provide comprehensive and targeted information that speaks to current concerns. Also, the speakers they engage are leaders who are passionate about what they do, deal directly with the issues being presented and are willing to share their best practices and successes. Since the project was introduced, several executives and experts at TC Transcontinental have been invited to share their experience, including Isabelle Marcoux (Chair of the Board), François Olivier (President and CEO), TALENT SCOUTS WANTED Are you up for it ? Stay tuned ! 20 Katya Laviolette (Chief HR Officer), Patrick Lauzon (VP Interactive Marketing Group), Mohamed Kahlain (VP Interactive Marketing Strategy), reporters such as Olivier Schmouker (Les Affaires), and printing sector experts like Hugo Parent (Continuous Improvement Advisor). To find out more about Les Affaires Events or to attend one of their many seminars, visit their website at http://www.lesaffaires.com/evenements (French only) DID YOU KNOW ? GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY IN SO MANY WAYS ! Nine TC Media reporters probe the heart of homelessness - for a night The Targeo team helps grant the wishes of sick kids This past January, nine reporters from several of our newspapers in Atlantic Canada took a journey into cold and solitude. Their mission : to spend a night homeless – without money or food – and document their experience. Some found comfort in a shelter and the kindness of volunteers and staff ; others spent the whole night on foot, looking for help they could not find. Nine moving and disturbing stories that everyone should read in the headline of February 17 ! The employees at Targeo have reason to be proud of their efforts. Despite their busy schedules, over the past few months they have raised $710 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Photo : Reporter Tara Bradbury from The Telegram, photographed in downtown St. John’s, Newfoundland, gave up a night’s sleep in a warm bed to give us a glimpse of the unfamiliar world of the homeless. Transcontinental Capri helps with the Angel Tree Project For over ten years now, the employees of Transcontinental Capri (formerly Schreiber Foods – Capri) have taken part in the Angel Tree Project, an opportunity, provided by Family Services in the Missouri Division, to “adopt” children and help families in need during the holiday season. This project exists thanks to the efforts of the various receptionists who have held the position over the years. This year, 48 children were “adopted” and received a Christmas present due to the generosity of more than 30 Transcontinental Capri employees. (See the January 9 headline for the names of all the employees who took part). In a spirit of generosity and the desire to pay it forward, the Targeo Social Committee organized games and draws, including bingo and a half & half, to encourage donations from fellow employees. The fundraising campaign ran from November to the Christmas holidays, bringing pleasure to employees while supporting a cause they care about. Les Affaires wins Grafika Award Magazine/Full Design The total redesign of Les Affaires and Les Affaires Plus newspaper won a top award on February 5 at the 18th annual Grafika Awards, which honour the best of graphic design in Quebec. The team won the Grafika Award - Magazine/Full Design, recognition that is much-prized by the Quebec publishing industry. Congratulations to the everyone in the Les Affaires Group ! 21 Finance et Investissement holds its 15th annual gala to celebrate the Top 25 in Quebec’s financial industry After more than three months of preparation, the TC Media publication Finance et Investissement held its 15th annual awards ceremony in Montreal on February 3rd to celebrate the Top 25 in Quebec’s financial industry. The gala pays tribute to the 25 winners whose achievements and influence marked the industry in 2014. During the evening, top industry professionals received major awards, including “Financial Personality of the Year,” which celebrates the influence, outstanding achievements and qualities of the winner, as well as the vigorous growth of the company under that person’s leadership. There are also two awards for financial advisors in the securities and life & health insurance industries. Kudos to the Finance et Investissement for organizing this event ! At the ceremony in February, it was our very own François Olivier, President and Chief Executive Officer of TC Transcontinental, who gave the 2014 Personality of the Year award to Louis Vachon, President and CEO of National Bank. Graduation ceremony for the first cohort from the Rémi Marcoux Entrepreneurial Track Program The graduation ceremony for the first students to complete the Rémi Marcoux Entrepreneurial Track, an academic program of study introduced just over a year ago and offered to students of HEC Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and Université de Montréal, took place on January 21, 2015. The program’s seven students had the honour of receiving their diplomas directly from Mr. Marcoux, who attended the ceremony with his daughter, Nathalie, and wife, Carmelle. Mr. Marcoux was particularly proud of the achievements of the first graduating class. “I know from experience that being an entrepreneur is not the easiest road to take, but I believe it’s the most exciting and gratifying one. I’m certain that you have all worked very hard to develop your entrepreneurial skills and I congratulate you for it!” said Mr. Marcoux in his remarks to the graduates. Long may the Rémi Marcoux Entrepreneurial Track program flourish ! Rémi Marcoux with one of the graduating students, Catherine S. Beaucage, as well as the Entrepreneurial Track coordinator, Marie-Ange Masson, the director of the program, Luis Cisneros, and Mr. Marcoux’ daughter Nathalie Marcoux. 22 TC BREAK The joys of winter, from coast to coast !
