Isn’t technology wonderful? (Don’t
all shout at once). Everybody seems
to have it either glued to their ear
or gazing at its glowing surface
blissfully unaware of the bit of the
world they’re sat in. I’ve got one
of those wonderful mobile phones
called a Doro – loved by older folk
everywhere simply because it is a
PHONE! It just connects me to the
person I want to speak to – or to type
out a text to them, and, it has nice
clear numbers.
Until now this has been fine, but,
probably like lots of you, there are
times when I’ve seen one of those
moving adverts on the telly where
children die because they drink filthy
water. At that point I have sometimes
been moved sufficiently to follow
the instructions, text WATER to the
number given, and they take £3 out
of my phone account. Easy! Then the
tech guys move in. Having quietly
donated to Water Aid a couple of
times, and been instantly thanked
by them, I suddenly got a call from
someone, on my mobile (that I don’t
give out the number unless I choose
to) who thanked me again, and
“could you answer a few questions”
and you all know what’s coming
next “could I pledge a regular
amount”. Sorry, answer “No, and
please get me off your database
or I won’t do it again”.
Hopefully they heeded my polite
(just) refusal and then I got another
text. This time it was for the disastrous
earthquake in Nepal, from the same
people. I was a bit peeved about
this. Like anyone else I am appalled
at the loss of life and the problems
of survivors. So what do I do? First
job was to text ‘OUT’ to the request
for money. True to their word they
removed me from the list. Did I feel
good about it? Nope! How can I
turn away from orphaned children,
starving people, and wrecked lives
and have a clear conscience?
Well, I found another way. It’s easy
enough, you go into Morrisons and
put your money in the buckets
on the checkouts. No names, no
pack drill and conscience eased.
I shall also have gone along to the
hastily organised coffee morning
at Mafeking Hall to support Fiona
Ormerod who has several times
worked with the people devastated
by the disaster to give them medical
help.
But isn’t it a shame, that I cannot
sit in my armchair at home, see an
appeal on TV and think “I can afford
3 quid” and just text it to them, easy
peasy – and they go and spoil it by
asking for more.

Comment
“Summer is here again!”
How time flies! The last “Comment” I
wrote for “In View” - for last December’s
issue - was all about last summer, and
some notable experiences I remembered
at that time. And now we are into
another summer; though at the time of
writing we are having a remarkably cold
spell in early May. That’s British weather
for you!
Whatever the weather, as I have no doubt
mentioned before, I enjoy walking each
morning along the Binn Wall - as the
sea wall along the front at Severn Beach
is called. Carrying a pair of binoculars,
I’m ready to focus on anything of interest,
whether wading birds on the mud flats, or
shipping getting in and out of Avonmouth
or Portbury. But what dominates the
scene without doubt is the colossal
bridge, the Second Severn Crossing,
striding out across the estuary, carrying
the busy M4 Motorway into South Wales.
A truly remarkable engineering feat!
Mind you, there is another remarkable
engineering feat following the same line
as the bridge, though you cannot see it at
all. That, of course, is the Severn Tunnel,
taking the main London to South Wales
railway line deep under the estuary.
All you can see is the old ventilation
shaft just by the Binn Wall at the end
of Shaft Road (appropriately enough).
And although we cannot see them, we
know that express and local trains are
frequently passing to and fro through that
wonderful tunnel which was constructed
in Victorian times.

One might conclude that we here in
this area occupy a strategic jumping-off
point for crossing the Severn Estuary.
But of course this has not been the
case for many years, - not like the time
before the two bridges were built, when
you could load your car on to a train at
Pilning Station to get through the tunnel
to Severn Tunnel Junction on the Welsh
side, - or going further back to before
the tunnel was opened, - the time when
you could get on a ferry at New Passage!
Now, as we sometimes have to tell
bewildered motorists during the
summer, you can’t get on to that bridge
from Pilning or Severn Beach; you’d have
to drive up to Almondsbury or along to
Avonmouth, or take the older Severn
Bridge from Aust. And try going by train
from Severn Beach Station to Cardiff! if you can’t catch that once-a-week train
that stops at Pilning!
But let’s count our blessings. Though we
can often hear the noise of traffic on the
M4 going over the bridge, and have to put
up with a lot of lorries on the A403, we
are not overwhelmed by traffic passing
through between England and Wales.
We can just go on enjoying the view!

weather will have warmed up a bit, and
that you will have a very good summer!

Thornbury Science Festival 2015
In July 2011 Thornbury’s first Science
Festival provided a week of events
to enable members of the public
to interact with science activities
and scientists. The feedback was
overwhelmingly positive and as
a result the second such festival
will take place from Thursday, July
9th to Saturday, July 18th this year.
A detailed programme of all the
events will be available four weeks
before the festival begins. Tickets,
mostly priced at £5 - £7 per head
can be obtained at a box office in
the town in the weeks leading up to
it. Telephone and email bookings for
tickets will also be possible.
The festival will feature twelve events
open to the public, beginning with
two performances of Michael Frayn’s
acclaimed play “Copenhagen”
and ending with a Science and
Technology Exhibition and (weather
permitting) an astronomical
observing session. Along the way
there will be opportunities to try your
hand at making your own perfume,
to find out about the Rosetta comet
mission and about Tyntesfield’s
medicine cabinet. There will be a
Science Question Time evening, with
an opportunity to pose a question to
the panel as well as talks on cancer
research, and the Bristol Dinosaur
Project.

WASP (Wheels at St Peter’s) is a
registered charity, formed in 1997, by
members of St Peter’s Church, Pilning,
with the aim of recycling mobility
scooters, and wheelchairs, to villagers
in the ‘In View’ area who need them.
It relies on donations to keep going.
It also runs the WASP Luncheon Club
which provides elderly residents with a
monthly visit to a pub for lunch.
There appear to be lots of village people
who have no idea what WASP is or does.
If you suddenly have need, short or
longer term, of the use of a wheelchair
WASP will do its best to help out.
You may see some of its dozen or so
scooters (bearing a WASP number plate)
around the area. These are ‘recycled’
as needed, although since its inception
when there was a lot of ‘Rip off’ activity
going on, scooters have become more
affordable. If you buy one, when you
come to sell it on, you usually find your
£1500 scooter is worth £100, if you’re
lucky, WASP scooters don’t have that
problem, they get passed around! All
riders pay for is third party insurance
£100 per year. All maintenance is carried
out by Pearce Bros Mobility, Yate, on
behalf of WASP. Light maintenance and
some administration is carried out by
Mike Woodhouse, and the secretary is
Robert Griffin who can be contacted by

Mr David Thorne is trying to trace any pictures of the Sea Walls Camp
at Severn Beach. His family lived in one of the huts there during WWII,
when he was very young, The huts were very basic, without electricity,
running water or toilets. The Camp later became a gipsy camp, now
Riverside Park. He is looking for pictures for his family history project.
He has spoken to Shirley Nemeth in the Cafe and Mike Edwards, the
History Group photo archivist, but cannot find any pictures of this site.

Once again I ask if anyone would like to join the Committee and run the SBNHW. There are quite a few now using the SBNHW web site, and I am sure some of you could help out. There is still some money to help restart it. Having kept it ticking over for the past 2 years I could do with some help and would love to hand over the reins to someone younger. You only need to meet once every 3 months and the main task is to help people be aware of incidents, how to theft proof their homes and liase with the local police. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT:
THE CLIFTON SUSPENSION BRIDGE
by Doug Nethercott PART ONE
The notion for the Clifton bridge
originated upon the death of the highly
respected Bristol wine merchant,
Alderman William Vick who bequeathed
£1000 (equivalent to approximately
£130,000 in 2015) to the Society of
Merchant Venturer’s in his Last Will
and Testament dated 1st December
1753 to build a toll free stone bridge,
with the expectation for the money to
accumulate interest until it reached
£10,000 and then be used to construct
the bridge crossing the gorge. By 1829
it became apparent that the intended
£10,000 was not going to be anywhere
near sufficient to construct a masonry
structure. An Act of Parliament was
obtained in 1829 to change his will to
make the structure out of steel and for
tolls to be levied.
It was through ill fortune that Isambard
Kingdom Brunel gained the good
fortune of submitting competition
designs for the Clifton Suspension
Bridge for which he ultimately
triumphed. He was born 9th April
1806 in Portsea, Portsmouth, and at
the age of 14 he was enrolled first
at the College of Caen in Normandy,
then at Lycée Henri‐Quatre in Paris.
When he completed his studies at

Henri‐Quatre in 1822, his father, Mark
Isambard Brunel (who was knighted a
Sir on 24th March 1841 by the young
Queen Victoria at the suggestion of
Prince Albert) had him presented as a
candidate at the renowned engineering
school École Polytechnique, but as a
foreigner he was deemed ineligible for
entry. He subsequently studied under
the prominent master clockmaker and
horologist Abraham‐Louis Breguet, who
praised his potential in letters to his
father.
In late 1822, having completed his
apprenticeship, he returned to England
to eventually work on the Thames
Tunnel project as an assistant engineer
to his father, who was Chief Engineer.
On 12th January 1828 the river broke
into the tunnel and a massive wave
swept along and killed six of the work‐
force. Isambard suffered a crushed leg
and semi‐consciousness and was sent
to Brislington in Bristol to rest and took
months to recover, which is when he
learned of the Clifton Bridge project.
A competition was held on 1st
October 1829 in order to find a design
for the bridge, and he submitted
four alternative proposals on the
19th November 1829 (aged 23)
for consideration by a Committee,
appointed by the Society of Merchant
Venturer’s who would adjudicate on the
matter.
The Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust
Committee consisted of members of the
Society of Merchant Venturer’s itself,
the Mayor of Bristol, the Governor of St.
Peter’s Hospital and the President of the
Chamber of Commerce.
A total of twenty two designs were
submitted and the Committee decided
they were not sufficiently competent
to make the necessary technical
judgments, so they appointed Thomas
Telford, (FRS, FRSE, first President of
the newly formed Institution of Civil
Engineers (ICE) in 1820), to be Chair
and make the necessary decisions.
Telford rejected Brunel’s designs on
the grounds that although “pretty and
ingenious, would certainly tumble down
in a high wind”.
The other designs were dismissed for
the reason that “none of the designs
were suitable for adoption”. The
Committee then asked Telford to submit
his own plans for a single short span
suspension bridge, which he did in
January 1830. Initially thought to be a
good solution, the latter came under
much criticism and was embarrassingly
rejected at a Committee Meeting held
on 16th October 1830. The Committee
then decided to invite thirteen
engineers, including Telford, to submit
designs for a second competition which
this time would be judged by Davies
Gilbert (PRS, founder member & first
Chair of the Royal Geological Society of
Cornwall in 1814), who appointed John
Seward (FRS, British Civil & Mechanical
Engineer) as his assistant.
From the elicited twelve designs
submitted, five, namely from Telford,
Brunel, Smith and Hawks, Rendel and
Brown were chosen for further detailed
consideration. Telford’s proposal
was quickly set aside for rejection,
“on account of the inadequacy of
the funds requisite for meeting the
cost of such high and massive towers
as were essential for the plan that
the distinguished individual had
proposed”. Discarding Telford’s design
left the judges with only four serious
contenders. Gilbert arrived at Blaise
Castle on 17th March 1831 to evaluate
the remaining designs. His final order of
merit was:‐ 1) Smith & Hawks. 2) Brunel.
3) Brown. 4) Rendel.
Brunel, however, was in Clifton when
the result was announced and as soon
as he knew what had happened he
arranged a meeting the very next day
with the judges at Blaise Castle through
Jeremiah Osborne, the Trustees solicitor.
If Brunel’s diary is to be believed, what
then followed was a tour de force by the
24 year old engineer. It seems that the
details of the scheme which the judges
had found to be “very bad” were really
Seaward’s view of the design and not
necessarily shared by Gilbert. Isambard

“talked over the old fool (Gilbert) until
he returned to his original opinion”.
Later that day, Brunel met the Trustees
and Gilbert further stated that “Brunel’s
explanations had materially altered his
original impression as to the details
of Mr Brunel’s plan” and it was “quite
equal to those in the plan submitted
by Messrs Smith & Hawks, but as his
plan was superior in strength it was
better overall”. Gilbert thus rationalised
his change of mind and Brunel was
formally appointed and congratulated
by everybody.
Most importantly, none of the three
other competitors was accorded
an interview or given the chance of
submitting second thoughts.

SEVERN BEACH & DISTRICT OVER 50’S CLUB June – I believe that’s half way through the year already – doesn’t time fly when you're having fun! If you're not having fun then why don’t you join one of the wonderful groups or organisations we have in this area, where you will always be made welcome. Of course if you’re of a certain age ours should definitely be your first choice, we have the best cakes and wine selection and aim to make everyone welcome. In June we have live entertainment from Holly House Jazz, a coach trip to Weymouth, and a Strawberry tea with Raffle. On the first Thursday of the month we hold our committee meetings whilst the members play cash prize Bingo. Also in June, along with the great and good of the area, we are submitting a floral depiction of a Nursery Rhyme for the St. Peter’s Flower Festival on the 27/28/29 June. Janet Slade ‘volunteered’ to produce the display for us, and roped in her husband John to build the prominence required for this display – that’s a huge clue to the Rhyme we are portraying. I hope you’ll come along and support this local show and have fun identifying the Rhymes. It is hard to believe that Term 6 is
beginning and another school year is
rapidly coming to an end!
Year 6 pupils were relieved when the
SATs they all worked so hard for were
over and we now await the results. In
June They spent a day at Marlwood, as
part of their transition to secondary
school in September.
We invited our new Reception children
in for the Teddy Bears Picnic, so they
could start getting used to ‘big school’.
Games, food and of course teddies were
enjoyed by all.
The Friends held their Summer Fayre in
June – thank you to everyone who came
and supported us.

Tang Soo Do has International Champions! On 25 April, four students from Severn Beach Dragon Tang Soo Do
entered the UK World Championships held in Cardiff. Various nations compete
including Canada, USA, Holland and Korea. Jo Wardrope, Mathew Brown, Ashlee Williams and Tyleigh Ellicott all competed
as individuals, representing their club and country. Jo walked away with a gold and silver medal for open hand forms and sparring
respectively. Mat, Ashlee and Tyleigh took 4th and 5thplaces, narrowly missing out
on place medals, but receiving competitor medals for their efforts. Their Instructor, Georgie Hilton, also competed in the Black Belt division, gaining
a silver medal. With a new world record for 1083 competitors on the day, it was always going to
be a tough championship. Severn Beach Club proved themselves on the day,
making their instructor especially proud. Well done to you all, you did brilliantly. Tang Soo! 28
