Editorial
From now, April 1st, until you read this,
the nation is going to be bombarded
with politics. Politics is very important
and the right to have a say by
voting was hard won years ago. At
this point all I will say is that younger
people reading this, with the right to
vote, should please use that right.
Most of us ‘old-timers’ will.
Parliament is dissolved and battle
has commenced. I am an avid
fan of the BBC, and the 1o’clock
news has been aboard the
Conservatives luxury ‘Campaign
Bus’, (other political parties have
similar arrangements) where the
correspondent talked knowledgably
about the campaign whilst I tried
to concentrate on what would
happen to her glass of water if the
bus stopped a bit quick. The bus has
cooking facilities, microwaves and
is fully equipped for live broadcasts
to the nation. I couldn’t make out
where it was from the shops it was
passing. The ‘link lady’ meanwhile
was freezing outside No10, and not
a soul came or went, not even the
glistening door opening to let the cat
out – boring!
We next went to Edinburgh, a
draughty location where the reporter
was wishing the SNP had invited her
aboard their luxury bus. She was
just as unhappy as the man posed
against the H&W crane in Belfast
whose politicians aren’t likely to hold
any balance of power. The reporter
on Anglesey was upstaged by
seagulls.
I shall enjoy a month of watching
what’s going on in the background
as I’m pretty sure no one is going
to change my mind when it comes
to voting. But, there is a fly in this
particular ointment, where is Nicholas
Witchell, Royal Correspondent? He is
on tenterhooks somewhere because
the Duchess is about to have a little
prince or princess. With dreadful
timing the imminent birth of the royal
babe is scheduled for 7 days before
the General Election! How will the
BBC cope? What if, like my own dear
Poppy a few years ago, the event
overruns by a week? It will crash
into the election! We shall be torn
between Nicholas standing outside
the hospital with rain pouring down
his suit (remember last time?) and
the Swing-o-meter! Oh joy – what
fun!
Let’s wish the Duchess a safe
delivery, and as for the politicians
I will add that little bit of the Lord’s
Prayer “and deliver us from evil”, but
please, do go out and vote.

A Great Achievement Recognised
Palm Sunday is always a special
occasion in the Christian Calendar, at the
beginning of Holy Week. But this year
at St. Peter’s, Pilning, it was also special
for another reason. At the end of the
morning service we made a presentation
to mark a very great achievement. Our
dear friend Roy Edwardes was about to
retire after serving no less than 61 years
as Church Organist.
(Because the same man happens
also to be Editor of this magazine, I
am exercising my right as a trustee
of Compton Publishing - which is
responsible for publishing “In View” - to
instruct the Editor to include this item,
whether he approves or not!)
Ann Parker, our Minister, expressed
the thoughts and feelings of us all
when she paid tribute to Roy’s devoted
service on the organ stool over so many
years.
A card with many signatures,
and an appropriate gift, were presented
to Roy, and his wife Pat joined him and
graciously received a bouquet of flowers
to recognize her unfailing support for her
husband.
Roy responded with characteristic humour
and humility, and though feeling sadness
at giving up the post of organist, he said
how delighted he was that his daughterin-law Sharon had been appointed to
succeed him; and he still looked forward
to playing the organ from time to time
as ‘Organist Emeritus’ - especially when
the very special church organ returns
to its place after its current renovation.
4
However, Roy’s spoken response was
fittingly followed by a musical one, as
he played an organ postlude on the
keyboard (doing temporary duty during
the real organ’s absence).
We don’t
usually applaud organ voluntaries, but
on this occasion it seemed entirely
appropriate when the congregation broke
into heartfelt applause!
SEVERNSIDE NEWS
Very many people in the wider community
of our villages will want to join the
members of St. Peter’s congregation in
saying, “Well done, Roy, for the great
contribution you have made as Church
Organist over so many years!”
Aerial image of Severnside taken in February 2015
Roger Ducker.
Thank You
A sincere ‘thank you’ to all who contributed
to a gift on my official retirement as
organist at St Peter’s, and for Pat’s
flowers.
The event was sprung on me the day
after we visited Worksop to see progress
on the organ. I did my best to wear it out
during my 61 years, but am very pleased
it will be in far better condition than when
I first came to play it, and, resplendent in
gold leaf, and with all the parts that were
missing from previous ‘improvements’
replaced, it can safely be placed in the
capable hands of my successor, Sharon.

Councillors given facility tour
Farmfoods and Delta Properties, the landowners
at Central Park, recently welcomed South
Gloucestershire Councillors and the Chairman of
Pilning and Severn Beach Parish Council on a tour of
Farmfoods’ new state-of-the-art distribution centre at
Central Park, Severnside. Councillors heard how the
new facility is boosting our local economy.
Did you know…
Central Park is part of a wider 650 ha area of land
that benefits from planning permission granted in
1957/58. The whole area has now been declared
an ‘Enterprise Area’ by the West of England Local
Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which includes South
Gloucestershire Council.
This means our area can keep the growth in business
rates income from new development.
Minimising flood risk
Delta Properties, the
landowners at Central
Park, have been
working closely with the
Environment Agency and
Lower Severn Internal
Drainage Board to improve
the local drainage system
to prevent the risk of
flooding.
As a result, works will soon
start to further deepen
the recently enhanced
local rhine (ditch) network
to further increase their
capacity to hold water.

Smile month
May is the last month of Spring and
the weather can be unpredictable.
Shakespeare observed ‘Rough winds do
shake the darling buds of May’ - hence
the expression ‘ne’er cast a clout till may
be out’. In other words hang on to your
warm clothing for a while yet.
This month provides us with two holidays:
the Early May Bank Holiday on May 4th
and the Spring Bank Holiday (formerly
known as Whit Monday) on May 25th.
There is a lot going on in between. Firstly
we have the General Election on May 7th.
By the time you read this you may well
have had your fill of party politics. We are
fortunate however, to live in a democracy
where any one over the age of 18, male
or female, has the right to vote and we
should exercise it.
Whether the outcome of the General
Election makes you grin or grimace, from
May 18th we enter National Smile Month.
This is an annual initiative by the British
Dental Health Foundation, which aims to
make people aware of the importance
of good oral health. I wonder if it is a
coincidence that it is scheduled so soon
after the chocolate onslaught of Easter
Eggs!
Caring for one’s teeth leads me on to
thinking about caring in a wider sense
and Jesus’ commandment that we should
love our neighbour with no limit on
who that neighbour might be. Every year
in the second week of May churches
of all denominations encourage local
communities to support Christian Aid in
challenging poverty across the world.
6
This year Christian Aid Week is raising
funds to target discrimination against
women.Women make up half the world’s
population but they are still, all too often,
economically disadvantaged and subject
to abuse because of their gender.
Throughout his ministry Jesus vigorously
promoted the dignity and equality of
women in terms of both value and
function. It is our responsibility to follow
his example and to support the efforts
of those who endeavour to do so both
nationally and globally.

Calling all creative families in Easter Compton Thank you
Dear Community and Friends I wanted to thank you all for the most wonderful send off "Into Retirement". I shall remember with a warm heart the tea party of the 6th March 2015 that you so kindly prepared and shared with me. Thank you for the overwhelming love and friendship you have shown to me over the past 21 years and it has been my honour and privilege to be one of your community doctors. I have loved my time with you all and I hope that I have made some differences to your health and well being. I leave looking ahead but I shall never forget you and how you have also shaped my life and that of my family in a very positive way. Thank you for the flowers, the cards, the book of comments, the local bird photographs, the Bee Keeping tokens, the John Lewis vouchers and all the charity donations. I hope to continue to be a volunteer doctor in Nepal and this autumn I am going to look after the children in remote villages along the Amazon in Peru. The disease profile will be very different with mosquito transmission causing Malaria and Dengue fever. I keep reappearing in Pilning and I am sure that I shall see many of you around and about, maybe on my bicycle whilst I try to keep fit in the fine weather. As promised, I will do another Cream Tea this summer, so keep a look out for the date in the In View and pray for sunshine. I look forward to seeing some of you and hearing your news when we meet. I wish you all good health and happiness. With grateful thanks for all your kindness. Would you like to make a scarecrow and take part in the village Comic Book Heroes & Villains

All scarecrows must be registered so that they can be included on the entry form and to ensure that there are no duplicates. A Most Unusual Day Trip
built the organ.
The coach set off at 8.30 on a blustery
Saturday morning in March with about
thirty people on board. This was the
start of a 170 mile journey, from St
Peter’s, Pilning, to the workshops of an
organ repair company situated in the
northern part of Nottinghamshire, just
north of Sherwood Forest. No, we didn’t
see Robin or Little John!
The only concession to machinery in the
workshop was a small lathe and a foot‐
operated shearing machine for cutting
sheet metal. The wooden framework
and the more intricate slides, sound
board and linkages within the organ
are all hand crafted. The keys are hand
carved, with cow‐bone for the white
keys and ebony for the black.
What we did see was the dismantled
organ from St Peter’s. After many years
of service, the organ is at the restorers
for a much needed MOT and detailed
refurbishment, a refurbishment that is
so meticulous that the organ will return
to Pilning in as-new condition. The
purpose of the trip was to familiarise
those with an interest in the organ with
the progress being made. The work
is being carried out by Goetze and
Gwynn (www.goetzegwynn.co.uk) in
their workshops on the Welbeck Abbey
Estate, near Worksop, and the highlight
of our trip was a guided tour of this
workshop.
Our guides gave an interesting insight
into their work, with a practical
demonstration of forming and
soldering an organ pipe, as well as
demonstrations of tuning.
After lunch in one of several eating
places on the Estate, we had the
workshop tour. This was truly an eye‐
opener for most of us, an Aladdin’s
cave of crafts, and skills of the highest
order. I hadn’t thought about it before,
but the differing skills of metalwork
and woodwork that come together in
the making of an organ is astounding.
The crafts-people have to be absolutely
accurate and precise; and I really
do mean precise, as precise as an
engineering masterpiece. All this is
done with hand tools in the traditional
manner, just as the craftsmen used who
18
We saw the Pilning organ, and its
many constituent parts. The main
carcass, with bellows laid bare, looked
quite stark without its cabinet and
foot-pedals. Only the keyboard and
stops gave it any resemblance of the
original instrument. The workshop also
displayed the main slide‐block, ready
to be skimmed and resealed to stop
air leaks. The new pipes for the organ
were laid out in neat rows on a bench.
We admired the workmanship and had
explained the different markings to
denote the notes to which the pipes
were tuned.
I enjoy listening to music, but I am not
musical, so to hear some of my fellow
travellers playing several of the organs
in the workshop was a pure delight. The
day was long and tiring, but this most
unusual trip was well worth while. I
look forward to hearing the refurbished
organ when it is reinstalled in St Peter’s.

Fauré’s Requiem and a sense of place
Pilning Festival Choir is something
to be cherished and encouraged. An
enthusiastic group of singers meet most
Mondays and practice a wide variety
of pieces with a view to performing as
a choir three or four times a year. We
have a choir that is well established,
with a friendly reputation and ready
for people to join them in sharing
their passion. In the last year or so
I have listened to several of their
performances, initially as a supportive
friend but now as a fan, if they are
allowed such, appreciative of what they
are trying to do.
Last Monday on March 30 the Requiem
consisted of seven pieces interwoven
to a Holy Week Communion Service.
I sat to read the order of service and
was taken back to sitting in St. Nicholas’
Church in Severn Beach. I never did
take Holy Communion and would not
this evening. I am no stranger to a mass
but no great friend either. This could be
a long evening. Those thoughts were
punctured by passages of simple choral
delight. I gradually determined to ignore
the religious aspects of the service and
throw myself to the places these sounds
and shapes of music might take me. I
know that they put a lot of effort into
making the choral input the best that
they can and I may be stretching your
imaginations to get to where I was. The
music had some serious value to this
56-year-old, old romantic. I didn’t join in
the hymns, I determinedly tried to close
out thoughts other than those created
by the sounds of our church and those
people in the choir.
th

our choir to fill the space between the
floor and roof. In Pilning church that
20
space is considerable and the choir
succeeded in creating a mood that
offered me a genuine feeling of serenity
and reflection. I was getting nostalgic
but not melancholic. I spent a fair bit of
time wondering about fellow members
of the congregation. I knew none of
them. They did not know me. We had
been brought together by this event.
Friends of choir members? Regular
church goers? Random music lovers?
One thing was for sure. I was one of
the youngest. What should be done
to get more people to hear this? Who
will be singing, or listening, in twenty
years’ time? Are the efforts of the
choir being wasted? At the very same
time that villagers who proclaim to like
things cerebral are at home watching
University Challenge or only Connect,
something very special was going on in
our village.
howling wind and the two courageous
male singers hitting first notes that were
nowhere similar (by composers choice,
I should add) to those played on the
piano.
An hour and a quarter later and the
choir were processing out. We, the
congregation, were left in a reflective
and shared silence. I was left feeling I
wanted to hear more. It was a church
service, there were only opportunities
for personal comments of appreciation.
This perhaps, is my vote of thanks. I
enjoyed every minute, every note of the
Requiem. I know it is not supposed to
be a joyous event but was left feeling
quite proud that this was happening
only a few hundred yards from my
home. It needs sharing, the choir would
benefit from having a larger audience.
Then again I shouldn’t demand what
maybe the choir doesn’t need. This
was the best performance I have heard
from them. No doubt Jonathan, and the
choir themselves, will pick holes in their
achievement. I only offer support and
have no expertise. I left thinking, if only.
Perhaps someone might read this and
think, I want a bit of that. What is next?
Whatever: no wherever, it may be, it will
be good for the soul.

Sadness did creep in. The Rev. was
imploring us to remember the message,
to stay on course. She wanted us to hear
the central purpose; that it was time to
share in the churches message. Pie Jesu
was sung, enjoyed and appreciated. Was
I wrong to feel this? I was taken into
melody, to rhythm, to patterns within
the walls of our little church and away
from my impending sit of shame where
others trooped up to take the bread
and wine. The silences in the service
were something to consider. This was a
space full of people unfamiliar with the
church and its ways of working. I say
full, but I mean half full. This should be
a central event in a village calendar. It
was mentioned in the parish magazine
but that message had not drawn people
out. Let’s not get too critical here. The
biggest challenge for those sat at the
back was the competition between the

Term 4 ended with the Easter Fayre and
Easter bonnet/baseball hat competition
organised by the Friends. Congratulations
to Klaudia, Sam P, Sage and Courtney,
who came first in their classes. The event
raised over £400 and a great time was
had by all!
We welcomed our new Head Teacher,
Mrs Read, at the beginning of Term 5 and
also Mr Partridge who is teaching parttime here too.
The Sandpipers have been learning about
Isambard Kingdom Brunel and went on a
trip to Bristol where they went aboard
the SS Great Britain (thanks to our Chair
of Governors, Carol Woodhouse, for
organising this) and walked across the
Clifton Suspension Bridge.
The Wagtails class finished their

On 14th March, Severn Beach Dragon Tang Soo Do celebrated it’s 24th year in operation. It was also the annual Interclub Championships. Severn Beach Club entered 7 students, not including myself as the instructor! Five of the students were entering the championships for the first time!
The day was long and it was rather intimidating seeing over 100 martial artists lined up for battle, but they stayed calm and focused. The categories were tough, and with each category came five judges who sat in silence watching you.
I am proud to say we now have some champions among us!

The organising committee is currently busy, visiting
the local primary schools to sow sunflower seeds
and to launch the poster competition. It will be
approaching local businesses for sponsorship and
will be meeting later this month to refine the show’s
schedule. Following the success of last year when
£1,000 was raised for WASP, this year’s chosen
local charity will be Pilning Pips Pre‐School who just
happen to be celebrating their 50th anniversary. So please do support the Flower

members of our community.

The students also got to loudly cheer when I received 1st and 2nd place trophies, and saw off 31 other competitors for 3rd place in the Black Belt Challenge! I appreciated the chanting!
