Islip Arts Council School of Cultural Arts
The Islip Arts Council through its School of Cultural Arts offers fine art and theatre classes for adults and children. Members of the
Islip Arts Council are entitled to a 10% discount on classes. Classes take place at the Islip Arts Council School of Cultural Arts in
Brookwood Hall (unless otherwise noted). Material lists are provided for all classes. Students are responsible for all material costs.
Registration: Mail-in, In Person or Phone-In. You do not have to be a Town of Islip resident to take classes.

Waterscape & Wildlife Photography
With John Cardone
Local author and photographer John P. Cardone conducts this class based on his photo book Waterviews: A Collection of
Photographs, Thoughts, and Experiences. This class is interactive as John brings up topics and hands out weekly photo-shoot
assignment to get you involved, so bring your camera equipment, take lots of photos, and come prepared to discuss your photo work
while learning from others. We will also discuss many aspects of cameras and photography and create a class photo calendar.

Creative Writing 1
With Don Uhrie
We will discuss creativity and the creative process. Students will then discover their own creative ability by writing responses to
written / visual prompts, poetry and music. From there, students will utilize journal writing as a means of “finding their voice,”
expressing thoughts and feelings on paper, and removing writer’s block. Next, students will explore and write the personal narrative, a
creative non-fiction literary piece that may reflect on significant events, or people, in their lives.

Intro to Art History: Venetian Renaissance

A foundation course designed for those with little to no prior knowledge of art history. This course is designed for those interested in
the art produced in Northern Italy, specifically Venice, during the 14th – 16th centuries. Venetian artwork differs from their central
Italian counterparts as the style blends together Byzantine, Islamic, & Western traditions and favors color over line. The course will
explore the work of Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Paolo Veronese, & more.

Seascapes of Summer

Capture the summer sun and beautiful Long Island coast in a relaxed painting class geared for all levels. Beginners welcome! Students

Intro to Art History: Early Italian Renaissance
With Jay Schuck
A foundations course designed for those with little to no previous knowledge of art history. The course is
designed for those with an interest in art produced in central Italy during the 13th–15th centuries, a time known as the Early
Renaissance. The artists of this period are known for making a conscious break with the Gothic tradition, ushering a new artistic
movement that would reach its height in the late 15th century. The course will explore the work of major artists from this period
including Giotto, Massaccio, Donatello, Pierodella Francesca, Botticelli, and more.

Intro to Art History: High Italian Renaissance
With Jay Schuck
A foundation course designed for those with little knowledge of art history. The course is designed for those with an interest in art
produced in central Italy during the late 15th – 16th centuries, a time known as the High Renaissance. Artists of this period are known
for their close observation of the natural world and human figures, their sophisticated use of iconography, and their innovations in
composition, perspective, and design. The course acts as a continuation to the Early Italian Renaissance course and will examine the
artwork of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and their contemporaries.

Watercolor for All

Pet Portraits

This class is dedicated to those friends that make our lives more complicated but give us company and happiness. A fun and relaxing
experience where students will be able to learn about animals' anatomy while learning drawing, and mixing methods to bring home a
portrait of your pet or your favorite animals.

Painting with Picasso

This peculiar class would focus on understanding why a painter as important as Picasso was successful by interpreting his paintings,

Northern Europe, particularly the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium. The course begins with the development of Early
Netherlandish Art and continues to the time of the Reformation. Artists to be examined include Jan van Eyck, Petrus Christus,
Albrecht Dürer, Bosch, Pieter Brueghel, and more.

Intro to Art History: Art of the Dutch Republic

This course is designed for those with little to no previous knowledge of art history. The course will survey the artwork produced in
the Dutch Republic during the 17th century, a time known as the Golden Age of Dutch Painting. The course will explore the various
genres of paintings, such as portraits, landscapes, scenes of the everyday and the artists who made them. Artists to be examined
include Rembrandt, Johannes Vermeer, Frans Hals, and more.

Silk Scarf Painting (Dyeing)

In this beginner class students will learn the art of painting on silk scarfs. The teacher will provide scarfs, non-toxic dyes, frames for

History of Modern Art: Early Modernism

This course is designed for those with little or no previous knowledge of art history. The course will begin in early 19th century with
a look at early themes of Modernism in the works of Romanticism and Realism through the years leading up to World War 1. In
addition, we will explore Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Art Noveau, Expressionism, Cubism and Futurism. Artists to be
considered include Turner, Manet, Whislter, Monet, Degas, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Matisse, Kandinsky, Picasso and more.

History of Modern Art: World War 1 through Post War 2
With John Cino
This course is designed for those with little or no previous knowledge of art history. The course will begin with the turbulent years of
World War 1 and Dadaism. The many varieties of art in the ‘Inter War’ period will follow including German New Objectivity, the
School of Paris, Surrealism and International Abstraction. The focus then shifts to New York and the Abstract Expressionists of the
New York School in the Post WW2 years. The course will conclude with the boom years of the 1960s, Neo Dada and Pop. Artists to
be considered include Duchamp, Matisse, Picasso, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Dali, Miro, Pollock, Rothko, Johns, Warhol and more.

Studio Painting: Exploring Color & Composition

The intermediate student may work in watercolor, pastel and/or acrylic from their own reference material. Color and composition will

Color the Supreme Tool

An understanding of Color helps to ensure a successful creative journey for the artist, while at the same time guiding the viewer

The Renaissance: Noble Patronage in France

We will endeavor to explore the foundations of the Renaissance in France through patronage by the nobility. The class will cover the
time period from roughly the mid-14th century to the mid-15th century. In the class we will explore patronage by those such as Jeanne
D’Evreux, King Charles VI, Charles VII, and King René of Anjou. Key artists the class will cover include Jean Fouquet, Bartholomé
D’Eyck, The Limbourg Brothers, and Nicolas Froment.

Spanish Renaissance Art: Royal Patronage Through The Centuries

We will explore the foundations of art in Spain and its pathway leading up to and through the Renaissance. The class’ topics will
begin with roots in Muslim Spain and continue through the 16th century. This class will focus on patronage of the Spanish monarchy,
which stems from the art of Isabel and Ferdinand and expands to the tastes of the Holy Roman Emperors Charles V and Philip II who
were also kings of Spain. This class’ lectures will focus on breathtaking masterpieces by artists ranging from Juan de Flandes to
Titian and from diverse cities ranging from Granada to Augsburg.

Those CSI Shows: Fact or Fiction?

Linda Maria Frank, author of the Annie Tillery Mystery Series, presents the realities of Crime Scene Investigation, from working the
crime scene and analyzing the evidence to apprehending the “perps”. Today’s law enforcement agencies have powerful tools at their
disposal, and our justice system uses these tools to make sure crimes are objectively and expeditiously prosecuted. Learn how the
protocols and procedures of forensic science are used to solve crimes and compare this knowledge to those TV shows we find so
fascinating. See for yourself, fact or fiction?

Weather permitting we will sketch and paint by the lake- exploring, observing and using our imaginations- to create our own unique
works of art. We'll look at the collages of Henri Matisse and Romare Bearden, the imaginative works of Marc Chagall, the
impressionist works of Renoir and many many more to inspire and to learn from! Artists will use pencil, charcoal and conte crayon,

We will make use of an array of materials, and experiment with different techniques so that we can tap into the unique artist we each
have within us. From the sensitive art of Camille Corot, August Renoir, and Mary Cassatt, to the imaginative and fun collage work
and paintings of Romare Bearden, Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse and the illustrations of Norman Rockwell, Jan Brett, and Maurice
Sendak- to name a few- we will learn. The classes will introduce and explore art from many cultures, from Africa to Asia to Europe
and America. (Ages 13 – 16)

Music Theatre Dance & Performance

Music theatre dance and audition intensive for ages 13-16. Class is designed especially for students interested in auditioning for high
school and college musical theater programs, but can be enjoyed by anyone with an interest! We will learn about important artist who
influence jazz and theater, while also learning how to survive a dance audition, what to wear, what to say, and how to act! On top of
that, we will learn a music theater jazz combination that we will perform for parents at the end of the session. Students need jazz shoes

Tweenz and Teenz Art

Explore various art forms from painting, and drawing to mixed media! Students learn how to represent their ideas and the world
around them in two and three dimensions. They will learn texture, pattern, contrast, focus, and composition among other important
techniques and concepts. (Ages 13 - 17)

The Mystery Writer’s Workshop
With Linda Maria Frank
Local author Linda Maria Frank has written a teen mystery series called Annie Tillery Mysteries. The Madonna Ghost, Girl with
Pencil Drawing, and Secrets in the Fairy Chimneys. Using her novels as a vehicle, she presents the techniques of mystery writing, and
explains the protocols used to solve and write mysteries. Equipped with these new skills, participants will view a crime scene and
receive some introductory plot information. A packet of clues completes their tool kit for mystery solving. From these materials new
mystery writers will write a mystery story of their own. (Ages 11+)

MUSEUM PROGRAMS FOR HIGH SCHOOLS
DOCENT PROGRAM: For National Art Honor Society Students
The annual National Art Honor Society requirement of student volunteer service will be fulfilled by the students’ work as docents at
the Islip Art Museum. Selected students will train with museum staff to become part of the volunteer staff and will be assigned a
schedule for giving tours.
A DAY AT THE MUSEUM
Spend the day at the Islip Art Museum and create art based on the current exhibit. This is a collaborative program with the museum
and local high schools. Islip Art Museum will provide a guided tour for students and teachers and the classroom space required for
completion of project. High school teachers will visit museum prior to field trip to develop lesson to be incorporated into the school
visit. Individual schools will provide materials for project.
Thursdays or Fridays – call to register.

How small is miniature, you ask? Works should be small enough to hold in the palm
of your hand or smaller! (8″ x 8″ max. not including frame) As has been previously
done, we are calling upon the global community of artists to present their work on
