Village of Gates Mills
Dear Villagers,
American flags and red, white and blue bunting celebrate America’s birthday in the prettiest Village
in Ohio. New residents, the parade is a Norman Rockwell painting come alive, so do not miss it!
The parade, ceremony and games are a delightful way to spend a couple of hours on the morning of
the Fourth. Parking along Epping Road or at The Community House are good options. There is no
parking along the parade route or in the school’s parking lots. On Old Mill Road, cars may park on
the south side of the street in a limited area west of Epping Road. Officers are there to assist you.
Our Glorious Fourth of July Parade steps off at eleven o’clock, leaving just enough time in the
morning for float builders to finish up their designs and parents to get the kids and their gear gussied
up for the grand promenade. Youngsters can decorate their rides beginning at 9:30 at Burton Court
courtesy of The Friends of the Library, or they can simply show up at the school’s lower lot with
their bikes, trikes and magnificent wheeled creations. Picnickers can come into the Village early and
spread out blankets and chairs to enjoy a leisurely lunch by the Polo Field. The Community Club
will be selling delicious grilled hot dogs, water, pop and snacks at the corner of Epping Road and
Main Street. As always, all proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.
Police Chief Minicello leads off the parade at 11:00 sharp followed by The Sons of the American
Revolution Color Guard. The Mayfield High School Band and The Cleveland Kiltie Band
enter from Colvin Road, as do The Chagrin Valley Hunt Club hounds. The convertibles and antique
cars enter from the school’s parking lots. The fire engines and floats join in from the service drive.
The full Parade Route starts in front of Village Hall.
« The parade heads south on Chagrin River Road,
« turns right and crosses over the South Bridge onto Old Mill Road,
« passes the reviewing stand by The Hunt Club & Southwick House,
« makes a left onto Epping Road,
« turns right onto Sudbury Road and
« pours onto the Polo Field on Epping Road for ceremonies, awards and games.
Parents and grandparents are reminded to keep children safe at curbside or “inside the white line” to
allow the parade vehicles safe passage. Thank you to The Improvement Society, Clark
Langmack, all the parade officials, the refreshment stand helpers and our Police and Service
Departments for planning a terrific celebration. A special thank you to Carillonneur David
Osborn for the pre-parade concert at 10:15 from St. Christopher’s-By-The-River Church.
The Summer Band Concert & Picnic Supper on the Village Green is set for Sunday, July 19th, at
5:30 PM. New villagers, this is a summer tradition where friends and neighbors pack picnic suppers,
bring flowers and table linens, and spend a summer evening in the heart of the Village. Our Service
Department will set out picnic tables and chairs, and families can picnic on blankets. T h e F a t
S u m m e r C i t y S a u s a g e B a n d will be providing the musical entertainment and SWIFTY THE
CLOWN, OHIO’S PREMIERE BALLOON ARTIST will be creating inflatable marvels for children of all ages!
Thank you to the Gates Mills Recreation Board for sponsoring this fun evening.
The Community Club has awarded scholarships to two recent high school graduates. Jan Carlisle
and Ann Jackson chair this committee, and both were impressed with this year’s award winners
whose photos are within. Congratulations to all! Best wishes for success in the fall and an enduring
tradition of volunteer service.
Have a wonderful summer, everyone! The Pink Sheet will return in September.

July 2015
Village of
Gates Mills
From the Mayor:
To paraphrase Garrison Keillor, it has been a quiet month in Gates Mills. Beneath that quiet,
however, is much activity. The warm weather has arrived, and with it various Summer
activities in the Village, from tennis and pickleball on the newly-rebuilt courts to the Garden
Club’s garden walk. Next up is the Independence Day parade and the Band Concert.
Some of you may be aware of House Bill 8, which was introduced in the Ohio Legislature
earlier this year. The bill proposes to further erode local governments’ home rule powers by
potentially forcing local governments to allow land they own to be included in oil and gas
drilling pools. It appears that the bill may not come up for a vote, as the Legislature is
consumed by its budget efforts. Nevertheless, the Gates Mills Regional Commission – which
first spotted the issues the bill raises – has kept a close eye on the bill and on related matters.
If you would like more information about it, please visit the Village’s website.
One of our police officers – Angela Suchetka – had a recent scare when she responded to a call
to assist a broken down truck on Mayfield Hill. As she arrived, the parking brake on the truck
failed, and the truck slid down the hill and hit her vehicle, pushing it off the road and flipping
it. The truck then crashed into a guard rail a few hundred feet down the hill. Fortunately,
Officer Suchetka and the driver of the truck suffered only minor injuries. Our police vehicle
did not fair as well. It had to be totaled. A replacement vehicle will be paid for out of an
insurance recovery.
I announced last month that our Village Administrator – Jo Ann Lechman – is retiring at the
end of August. The Gates Mills Improvement Society has organized a retirement party for Jo
Ann. It will be Sunday, August 30, at 4:00 p.m. I am sure many residents are looking forward
to telling Jo Ann how much she has meant to the Village. I hope to see you there.
Finally, it is with a great deal of sadness that I note the passing of Bob Matejka, a long-time
Village resident. Bob was often described, quite accurately, as a man’s man. But he was also a
great husband, father and friend. He will be missed.

Gates Mills Police Department
Proud to Serve…Sworn to Protect
From Your Police Department:
Last month, your Police and Fire Departments partnered with Gilmour Academy to provide Safety
Town classes for two energetic groups of four and five year olds. The week long curriculum
incorporated hands-on activities addressing traffic safety, stranger safety and fire safety. The
program was a great success due to the efforts of Officers Suchetka and Strasshofer, Fire Chief
Robinson, Gates Mills Service Department and the staff at Gilmour Academy. Please visit the
Village’s website, www.gatesmillsvillage.com, where you can view photos from Safety Town.
The Police Department has added a new part time police officer to our staff. Jaime Planinsek is a
28 year veteran of law enforcement, and has worked for the City of Shaker Heights since 1992.
Jamie is currently a shift sergeant in Shaker Heights and will prove to be a valuable addition to the
Village.
With the Fourth of July quickly approaching, here’s what you need to know about fireworks. The
general public may purchase consumer fireworks from a licensed wholesaler or manufacturer, but
those fireworks cannot be discharged anywhere in the State of Ohio. Ohio’s fireworks laws are
written to protect people and promote safety. Failing to comply with these laws can result in
devastating fires and catastrophic personal injuries. Enjoy your Fourth of July celebration, but leave
the fireworks displays to the licensed professionals.
Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing everyone at the Fourth of July Parade and at the
Band Concert!
Until next month – Proud to Serve…Sworn to Protect

NEWS FROM THE CHIEF!
Well, it’s time to get ready for summer vacations that we all look forward to. Every year many of our
residents leave home for out-of-town trips and vacations. But what happens if while you are away,
your fire alarm system malfunctions and sends a false fire alarm signal? The fire department will
respond to your home and perform an exterior check for smoke and/or flames. But how can we
effectively check a basement or upper floor?
The answer is simple: JOIN THE KEY PROGRAM! Contact one of the Gates Mills Town Hall
Coordinators (Char or Dorothy) at (440-423-4405) and provide them with a key to your home. A
Police Officer will bring this key to your house whenever there is a fire or burglar alarm reported.
Utilizing your key, the fire department will be able to check your entire house for smoke or fire
without breaking doors or windows. Also, the Police Department will be able to check your home
thoroughly for signs of an intruder.
Summer means that it’s time f or the FIRE HYDRANT MAINTEN ANCE PROGRAM !!!
Every year, the fire department must test the fire hydrants for proper operation. All 709 fire
hydrants must be flushed (which means opening the hydrant to flow water) and then all three hose
connections are lubricated. This continued maintenance of the water system is required to assure
that if needed, there will be sufficient water to fight fires. This program also helps keep fire
insurance rates down.
Fire hydrants will be flushed throughout the summer on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from
8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Sometimes the increased amount of water moving through the pipes will
disturb sediments such as dirt, small stones and rust making the water look dirty or cloudy. If this
happens the best way to clear it up is to run your water until it returns to normal.
Once the flushing and lubrication is completed, fire hydrants that need to be repainted will get a
fresh coat of green paint and a new reflective band. Thank you for your support of this critical
program.
Have a great summer!

Losing fat isn’t easy. I don’t have to tell you that.
You’ve been striving for a fat loss goal for longer than
you’d like to admit. To work towards your goal, you
slave in the gym and watch what goes in your mouth.
But what if you could drop 100 calories or more by
making a single change to your meal or snack? It is
possible. You’ve just got to know where to swap.
Check out the list below to find out nine easy swaps
that will make your diet drop 100 calories instantly.

calories from your meal. At the same time, you’ll get

They’re readily available, taste great, and give you

Have a hard time taking your coffee straight? You’re

GATES MILLS EDUCATION COMMITTEE LIAISON TO MAYFIELD SCHOOLS SANDRA TURNER, CHAIR Like Father like Son, GM Elementary School is still second to none!! JENNIFER DECKER AUDREY DVORAK LARRY FRANKEL EMILY MCCARTNEY JENNI MCMASTER MARY REYNOLDS JODY SAKS Jim Stafford and his son Dylan both have had the great honor of going from Kindergarten through 5th grade at GME School! For Jim, it meant so much to know that Dylan attended each of the same classes as he did but many decades later. Jim stated, “I only have fond memories of Gates Mills School, and I feel so fortunate to know that my son, Dylan, has had the very same opportunity.” Even though many decades have separated the two, many qualities of the school have remained the same. According to Jim, “Having observed how Dylan was treated not only by his friends, but also by his teachers and staff, the school has been able to retain a unique quality that I experienced as well. With the small population of the school and its beautiful setting, a student not only feels safe and respected but also loved! There is no better way for a child to start out their life than with that type of foundation under them!” He went on to say that he feels that the school has been able to improve by opening up the boarders a bit and taking in those who are not residents. “One of the benefits I had while attending the school,” Jim added, “was that my friends were children of well educated, mostly born and raised in Cleveland, parents who had the common goal of offering their children the best educational opportunity they could. That was, of course, a great environment for me, but now, the parents are not only well educated ,but they are also coming directly from different parts of the world. Dylan now has an international perspective with friends from India, Russia, Africa and Jamaica who may all become lifelong friends!! As our world gets smaller, he will have a considerable advantage over what was offered to me.” And to think that this is coming from a little school on Colvin Street nicely nestled in our own valley!! MARIE SALIBRA MITZI SEITH JIM STAFFORD Gates Mills Elementary School Amazing Kids Doing Amazing Things! When Isabella McMaster, was doing a project in Mrs.Vujaklija’s 3rd grade class about Jane Goodall, she was inspired to hold a fundraiser of her own to help orangutans in Borneo. Her caring teachers and principal supported her efforts every step of the way. She researched, made signs and asked her friends to join her in her efforts. With the help of her classmates, the 2-‐day fundraiser raised enough money to “adopt” an orangutan named Mr. George Baru who is being protected by Orangutan Foundation International after losing his mom and home to palm oil plantations. The entire school community helped Isabella fulfill her dream of having a successful fundraiser. Gates Mills School supports students inside and outside of the classroom to be the future leaders of the world! Hooray for Gates Mills School and for Mr. George, the new unofficial mascot of GMS! ISABELLA MCMASTER & ABBY DOMINISH MR. GEORGE BARU Congratulations to Gates Mills resident, Jack Hansen! Jack was a recipient of the A.V.I.S. Award (Attitudes Visible In School) presented by The Mayfield Academics Boosters Club. Jack demonstrated outstanding enthusiasm, leadership skills, cooperation and effort during his 6th grade year at Mayfield Middle School. Way to go, Jack! The goal of the Academic Boosters Club is to promote and enrich the academic climate of the Mayfield Schools. It recognizes and rewards academic achievement, scholastic improvement, positive attitude, and extraordinary efforts in the students, as well as recognizing, rewarding and assisting the Mayfield Schools staff. Hundreds of students and dozens of staff members benefit each year from the various projects we support, such as Academic Hall of Fame, the Great Readers Program, Mock Trial, the World Affairs Club, the AVIS (Attitudes Visible in School) Awards, literary magazines, and numerous mini-‐grant requests for special classroom enrichment activities.
We raise our funds through an annual membership drive joined by over 400 parent and staff members, corporate and
commercial sponsors, an annual reverse raffle, and other activities. Gates Mills Garden Club

Cuyahoga National Forest Leased Farm Program Tour
August 11th, 2015
Carpool from “The Barn” 9:00 a.m. sharp
Surrounded by the history of the valley's early farmers, modern families carry on agricultural traditions, while also
introducing their own specialized practices. In order to preserve the valley's pastoral landscape and protect both natural
and cultural resources, the National Park Service developed a program called the Countryside Initiative which invites
farmers to lease land and farm in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This program balances the needs of the land and
farmer, who must follow strict guidelines for sustainable farm management. Plan to join us for a very unique experience
visiting two of these farms. We will also enjoy a special cooking demonstration and ‘farm to table’ lunch at Spice Acres.

5 EASY WAYS TO PREVENT GETTING CANINE INFLUENZA
Canine influenza is a viral disease of dogs. You may have read reports
about this in the news. Luckily, there are 5 easy ways you can prevent
your dog from getting this disease or managing it.
Here are the 5 easy ways to protect your dog; details are provided below.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Know more about how this virus is spread to your dog.
Get your dog vaccinated against canine influenza.
Stay away from areas where your dog will encounter other dogs.
Learn more about whether canine influenza can spread to other species.
Understand what it looks like if your dog may be infected with canine influenza.
Canine influenza is spread to other dogs like human influenza virus is spread to other people-coughing, sneezing, and even indirectly through objects like leashes, food bowls and even
clothing that can carry live virus (they can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours).
Just as human influenza virus changes every year, so can canine influenza. Therefore, currently
available canine influenza vaccines may not be 100% protective. Regardless, they are likely to
help your dog’s immune system fight against exposure to many strains of canine influenza. Talk
to your veterinarian about what vaccines are recommended for your pet’s lifestyle.
One of the best ways to prevent the spread of canine influenza is to keep your dog away from
other dogs. However, you may want to balance the risk of exposure versus your dog’s
happiness. If your dog loves to have “playdates” with other dogs, be sure you know that you
dog’s playmates are receiving the same kind of precautions you give your dog, like vaccines.
Luckily, canine influenza isn’t thought to be able to infect people and make them sick, but it may
be able to make your cat sick.
What does it look like if your dog has canine influenza? Your dog may cough, have runny eyes
or nose, be lazier than is typical for your dog, not want to eat all its food, and have a fever.
If you suspect your dog has been in contact with an infected dog or has the symptoms
mentioned, then call or make an appointment with your veterinarian. Canine influenza and other
infectious diseases of dogs and cats reinforce our commitment to the Veterinary Payment
Program for our One Health Family Members in Need. For more information about this program,
reach us at [email protected] and search our web site at OneHealth.org.

GEORGE PESUIT was born on March 16, 1917, and died on January 31, 2015, just short of his 97 birthday.
He was born and raised in Cleveland. George is survived by his sons Gary, who was our service director in
Gates Mills Village (Diana), and Craig (Barbara); three grandchildren, Benny, Wendy and Frank, and one
great-grandchild child, Jimmy. His wife, Eleanor, preceded him in death. For many years Eleanor had
worked at the town hall, mostly as the police dispatcher, and secretary to the mayor. She had the job of
assembling the Pink Sheet around her dining room table with the "help" of her sons. After her death,
George lived by himself in his house on six acres next to the river until he died. George and Eleanor
moved to Gates Mills in January 1950. Their house was built by Sherman in 1851. George still has an older
brother who survives him at 101 years old in California. George's father was a house builder, John Pesuit &
Sons, one of the sons being George. He built several houses here in Gates Mills. When they retired, they
spent winters in Ft. Myers, Fl. for five months. Coming home George loved taking care of his property. He
was also an artist who entered and won in the Gates Mills Art Show and gave paintings to friends

Our club’s mission is to have fun, meet new people and develop personal relationships--maybe even romance.
We have been together for more than 5 years and have had many exciting social gatherings.
Bring us your excitement and enthusiasm, and we will share ours.
OPEN TO SINGLE MEN AND WOMEN
The Gates Mills Band Concert is Sunday, July 19th.
This will be a pot luck, type picnic, so let me, Nicki or Diane know what you will be bringing to share.
Nicki will set up the tables Sunday morning. Call her if you can assist: 440 669-7434.
In August, we will have either a pool party at a member’s home or a potluck meal at Burton Court, 1601
Chagrin River Road, Gates Mills. It is between the Library and Sara's Restaurant.
Please RSVP to me at 440 255-2425 or [email protected] so we can eliminate duplicate food item.

HELP ME, HELP YOU &
GATES MILLS
It's about time for me to head off to college. I'd
like to thank the village residents for giving me
the opportunity to serve them and our
community through the 'Help Me, Help You and
Gates Mills' recycling program. It was a true
pleasure getting to know the residents, and I
am grateful that I was able to offer my
assistance.
Don't worry, though, another village
resident, Mat DiPuccio, is taking over my duties
and will continue to pick up your paper
recyclables. Please call Mat at 216-536-0233,
and he will be happy to continue this service.
Thank you, Nick Regalbuto
(216-536-0233)
Thank you to Chagrin Valley
Nursery for supplying the parade
floats with plants! The nursery is
open to the public. See website!
