PARENT BULLETIN
JETS
Debbie Glinowiecki, Principal
Nancy Aumiller, Assistant Principal
March 5, 2015
Dear Parents,
This past month Mother Nature has played havoc with all of our schedules. Our students
continue to play “catch-up” as teachers retool their plans due to scheduled and
unscheduled closings and delays. We have had two full Mondays of instruction since
Winter Break and no week has been five full days! With that said, we can’t thank you
enough for your patience and understanding. Safety for all students and staff is the
primary concern for BCPS when any decision is made. Hopefully next week we will
start to turn the corner towards spring!
As of Tuesday, our third, fourth, and fifth grade students are taking the new PARCC state
assessment. The math portion is online while the reading is paper and pencil. Due to our
“mini-lab” we are able to test two classes at a time online. Unlike past years, we also will
be testing in the afternoon. This year is the baseline year for scores. It means that it is
the “starting score” for any child taking the test with the goal being to improve the score
in each subsequent year.
Career Day has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 12. We appreciate all the parents
and community members who have volunteered to speak to the students. It promises to
be a great morning! Don’t forget to have your children wear “college attire.”
We thank all of the Jacksonville families for their generous support shown to the Daniels
family at this time. Mrs. Epple visited Ava last week taking over cards, gift cards, and
the generous amount of money donated on Wacky Wednesday. The PTA is coordinating
efforts to assist the family in other ways.
Focused on Quality
Committed to Excellence
Our sympathy is extended to Ms. Aggie Rodriquez, second grade teacher. Her mother
passed away in February.
As we move into spring, it is hard to believe that Spring Break is right around the corner.
Students will begin their break on Thursday, April 2. It is actually a professional
development day for teachers. School will resume on Monday, April 13.
Happy Spring!!!

What Are First Graders Learning????
First Graders learned about China as part of their social studies unit, My World Near and
Far. On February, 19th, first grade celebrated the Chinese New Year. Part of the
festivities included eating rice from the Golden House Restaurant. Golden House
donated chopsticks, rice, and placemats with the lunar calendar to help give the
students an authentic experience. A big thank you to Ms. Stacy, owner and manager of
Golden House Restaurant and former Jacksonville parent, for making this day a huge
success!

TALKING ABOUT THE TOUGH STUFF
Have you ever wondered how to talk to your child about "the tough
stuff"? Talking to young children about the loss of a pet, friend, parent or
grandparent, divorce, etc can be really scary for them and for us as parents.
Join us on Wednesday, March 11th from 6:30pm-8pm at Jacksonville
Elementary School (in the cafeteria). We will review how children
understand these concepts from a developmental perspective and learn how
to answer their questions and how to explain things to them in a
developmentally appropriate way.
Guest Speakers: Beth Kreyling, MS, CCLS, CT, Child Life Specialist and
Aminah Wells MSW, LCSWC, CT, Pediatric Hospice Support Specialist
Please sign up by March 7th if you plan to attend so handouts can be
planned for accordingly. This event is open to parents, grandparents and
caregivers of 1st and 2nd graders only at this time.

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear JES community,
In the midst of record-breaking cold this winter, JES families and staff have shown (yet
again) that you have the warmest hearts. Your outpouring of compassion and support
last week for 1st grader AVA DANIELS and her family was truly inspiring and will help
this family make every moment count. Thank you so much for your generosity and your
continued thoughts and prayers for them.
VISIT US AT
WWW.JESPTA.ORG
The Hawthorne Elementary and Ark Preschool students also greatly appreciated your
kindness as you donated over 900 books during the Book Drive and JES students made
more than 200 bookmarks for them at the Outreach Kids Clubs – wow!
International Night was an amazing experience for all who attended thanks to the
dedication of founder and chair JASSI AHUJA and a phenomenal group of family and
staff volunteers! We look forward to this event’s return in two years – and while Jassi will
not be at JES to chair it again, we’re grateful that she has kindly promised her assistance
then.
I feel very fortunate to have JES parent AMY CUCINA (443-540-6629 - acucina@hotmail.
com) as our new PTA Special Education Liaison. She’ll share resources with our families
from the BCPS Special Education Office and looks forward to helping with questions
about the IEP process and more.
This March brings an opportunity to celebrate how lucky we are to have such fantastic JES
educators – JES Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is March 23-27. LAURA BEYNON
has super plans and students will have many fun options to participate.
Spring is almost here - really! Let’s think ahead to a great day at Camden Yards: Sunday,
May 3rd, is our JES Orioles Day – order your tickets this month. Also, you’ll be able to
stock up for Spring Break fun with good stuff from Five Below on March 20-22 – bring
the attached flyer to the Hunt Valley or Cockeysville locations and the JES PTA will receive
10% of purchases! Amazing amusements are ahead, too, with our May 8th Spring
Carnival and Silent Auction – mark your calendars and THINK SPRING!

JES PTA Funding Update:
Your support now is needed and appreciated!
Dear JES community,
We’ve kicked off our 20th anniversary with a great party in October and circled the globe at International Night
last month. Thank you for the time, talents, and funds you’ve shared so far this year!
We must ask for your help again now with funding to make sure we can provide the support pledged in our
annual budget to our amazing students, staff, school, and community!
While generous donors contributed $15,000 to our Jet Fuel fundraiser, this was $5,000 less than anticipated.
eScrip has also fallen short by nearly $2,000 due to unexpected program changes. Fortunately, there are
many ways to help make up this shortfall now:

Tax-deductible JET FUEL donations are still welcome - grandparents, aunts, uncles are all invited to donate

It’s not too late to join the PTA – membership lasts through Sept. 30th – only $8 per member

Purchase our awesome SPIRITWEAR and support JES in style

Participate in our upcoming benefits:
o Five Below (Hunt Valley & Cockeysville locations) – March 20-22
o Greene Turtle Restaurant in Hunt Valley – April 16 (all day)
o Domino’s Pizza – March 25, April 22, & May 27 (delivery or carryout all day)
o JES Day at Camden Yards – May 3

Support our May 8th SPRING CARNIVAL & SILENT AUCTION with your donations and enthusiastic bidding!
Watch for info coming soon on the popular GRADE BASKETS! Silent Auction - contact Susan Marziale.
Business sponsorship opportunities – contact Jennifer Walter or Whitney Leber.

Help us earn eScrip funds with your SAFEWAY purchases: Register your Safeway card at www.eScrip.com
and pay by cash, debit, or gift card at Safeway. Credit card payments will NOT earn eScrip.

Support the PTA with your AMAZON purchases – we receive 0.5% through the Amazon Smile program:
Select “Jacksonville Elementary School PTA” and shop at http://smile.amazon.com/

Business support invited! Matching gifts for your Jet Fuel donations, in-kind donations for many events
and programs, and sponsorships are appreciated.
Visit www.JESPTA.org for quick links, forms, and
information for all of the above opportunities!
