Updated March 2015 What is Supadance?? Supadance is a series of competitions that takes place throughout the year over 5 matches, with an additional presentation event. It is between dance schools all over the UK but is segregated into areas for practical reasons. As the name suggests the event is sponsored by Supadance, a big name in the world of Ballroom & Latin dancing. How does it work??? Supdance Guide Each school puts forward a team of 4 couples to compete in a particular age group, (the children groups are Juveniles -Under 8, & Under 12, & Juniors Under 16). If there are more than 4 couples available in a particular age group then there will be reserves and couples may be rotated through matches. You will need to complete a registration form at the beginning of the year for your dancer and make a registration payment approx. £5. If you are in the under 8 or 12 team you will dance the waltz, quickstep, cha cha and jive at every match. Each couple in the team dances these 4 dances against different couples from other teams. The under 16s will do waltz, quickstep, cha cha & jive at the first 2 matches and then foxtrot, tango, rumba & samba at the next 2 matches. Whilst each couple dances the remainder of the team is encouraged to support their team mates with cheering and clapping to cement the team spirit. Website www.jansu.co.uk Email [email protected] Telephone 07810 208765 Scan here with smart phone Find us on facebook for photos, Results & other useful information Each team is awarded points per match in accordance with their performance and in relation to other teams, and these are accumulated throughout the season to produce a place ranking and the top 3 teams are awarded medals at the November presentation. The first 4 matches will involve all the schools having a team on the floor in a specific age group and in the fifth and final match the teams will be split into divisions according to their performance throughout the season. The results will be posted on our website throughout the season. Supdance Guide Page 1 of 3 Updated March 2015 What happens on the day?? What happens on the day continued…. When the venues for the season are confirmed they will be posted on the JanSu website, the address can also be found on your ticket for satnav reference. The venue may change for each match but is likely to be a leisure centre, check for any specific parking arrangements before you go. After the couple competitions it is then time for the team matches, each team parades around the floor in school jackets (see Sue if you need to order one), the team sits together and each couple needs to listen for their letter and number to be called. Once the matches are run there may be more couples competitions but once you have heard the couples results you are free to go home!!! (Around 12.30 for juveniles.) The doors open usually 9.45am so you need to aim to arrive by then for juvenile dancers, with girl dancers hair already gelled and sprayed back in a tight bun; and join the queue in the leisure centre to enter the sports hall. Once you are allowed into the sports hall (you will need to show your ticket on the door), look for people you recognise from JanSu to locate our area of seating. All dance schools have an allocated space. Then you can put down some of your baggage and take the children to get changed. Your couple will need to collect a number, Sue is often at the table giving these out near the stage. This needs to be safety pinned onto the back of the ‘boy’ in the partnership. It is then a good idea to practice on the floor, music will be playing and it just helps to settle in. The competitions usually start around 10.15 for the juveniles and first of all there are couples events. These are for individual couples to win trophies (or a small amount of money – the money that would have been spent on the trophies is then donated to charity). The competitions are split into age groups and for Under 12 and Under 8’s and whether you are a boy/girl couple or girl/girl couple. These are run in heats and once you have danced you need to listen for the next round of your event and then listen for your number to see if you have succeeded in getting a recall. This continues until the final 6 dance couples are selected for the finals. Afterwards a new number is needed for the team matches and someone from JanSu will supply this. Brief Timetable of the day for juveniles (Juniors and Adults have same format but later star times) 9.45 Arrive at venue with ticket and queue to enter sportshall Locate JanSu dancers in hall to find seats Get dancers changed into outfits and shoes Dancing couple collects a number pinned to back Practice on the floor 10.15 competitions start Couples competition separated by age and on match days by division and boy / girl or girl/girl couple (this does not apply on selection day) Listen for recalls in events Change number for team match and put on jacket If it is on a split floor make sure you know which side your team is Parade with team and dance when number called Listen for couples results especially if you made it to a final!! Approx 12.30pm Go home!! Not forgetting the most important point of the day – to have fun and enjoy dancing and supporting your team mates. Regardless of your ability or how well you do on the day, participation and enjoyment are the vital ingredients. Supdance Guide Page 2 of 3 Updated March 2015 Obtaining dancewear – please see also Competitive Dancewear Guide. As mentioned there are often second hand outfits available within the school so please ask. Ebay can also be useful, but it may be wise to just check with someone before you spend a lot of money on an outfit that may not be suitable. Key things to remember Shoes are sometimes available second hand too, especially juvenile ones (white ones), but they can be purchased online, reputable dance shoe specialists include. www.supadance.com www.dsi-london.com www.dancesport.uk.com www.internationaldanceshoes.com Again ebay can be useful, just be careful with the junior shoes especially that they are genuine dance shoes. There is a shop in North Camp, Farnborough – Flashdance, 44 Alexandra Road, Farnborough, GU14 6DA - which sells dance shoes and you can go and try them on, and they are happy to order other sizes for you. There is also a shop near Waterlooville - All For Dance, 1A The Precinct, Portsmouth Road, Horndean, Hampshire, PO8 9LA. Facebook If you are facebook users you may want to like to the Supadance page and of course our JanSu page where we post results and pictures and other useful information! Whilst there seems a lot of information here, once you have been to the first event it will be clearer. Don’t forget everyone is happy to help and offer advice if you have any concerns or questions – just ask. 6 dates - Each couple is asked to commit to the 6 dates throughout the year although we do understand that there is life outside of dancing and where possible we try to work around this. Tickets - Remember to buy your tickets before you go, for everyone attending including the dancers and spectators. They are approx. £10 each. Venue – Check the venue location for each event and parking details. Times – check doors opening times to make sure you are there in plenty of time. Jacket - Remember to take your JanSu jacket for the team parades. Hair - Make sure girls hair is gelled and sprayed up in tight bun before you go; boys just need to be neat and tidy. Refreshments - Make sure you take plenty of drinks, snacks and even a packed lunch. There is often a café in the leisure centres but it is not always convenient to leave the hall and queue, plus they are often more expensive than taking your own! Outfits - Don’t forget the dance outfits, dance shoes and white or black socks for juveniles, plus safety pins for numbers. Small dancers may benefit from time occupiers such as a book or game device for gaps between their dances. 2015 dates 15th March – 1st Match Newbury 17th May – 2nd Match Andover 14th June – 3rd Match Reading 13th Sept – 4th Match Andover 11th Oct – 5th Match Split Division - Reading 1st Nov – Presentation 5th & 6th Dec - Finals Weekend Blackpool Supdance Guide Page 3 of 3
