Arts. We have served and educated the College of Charleston campus and greater
Charleston community for the last 30 years through the presentation of adventurous and
high quality contemporary art exhibitions. We provide a multidisciplinary laboratory for the
production, presentation, interpretation, and dissemination of ideas by innovative visual
artists from around the world.

Section 4 – Primary Purpose of the Proposed Funds
Brief Description of Primary Purpose (3000 character limit including spaces and punctuation)
The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art is embarking upon securing a $2.5 million endowment that
will 1) ensure financial stability of a rich cultural resource whose goals are to perpetuate
contemporary arts programming for Charleston, the region and visitors for generations to come; and
2) enrich the program excellence for the benefit of all College of Charleston students, and the
greater Charleston community.
We are asking the Joanna Foundation to consider an investment in our endowment to support the
Halsey Institute's four strategic priorities:
1. Arts programming that strengthens our role as a vital cultural resource for our community.
2. High quality documentation of all exhibitions, many of which have traveled to museums and
galleries around the country. We produce catalogues, videos, educational brochures, and a
comprehensive online feature for each show.
3. Looking to See program, the flagship of the Halsey Institute's education activities, which
provides free guided tours of each exhibition with a focus on K-12 students.
4. Artist-in-residence program, which builds a platform for the international exchange of different
cultural traditions. Our commitment to originality and innovation is indeed one of the hallmarks of the
Halsey Institute's reputation.
The Joanna Foundation's support of the endowment will ensure that future generations will have the
opportunity to experience world class contemporary art in this beautiful historic city. Our endowment
will ensure that the Halsey Institute is well positioned both within the College of Charleston and
within the community to remain as an articulate advocate for adventurous contemporary art. It will
also fortify the Halsey Institute's leading role among contemporary art museums within colleges and
universities in the US as we further scholarship and appreciation of the art of our time.
The endowment for the Halsey Institute is an integral part of BOUNDLESS, the College of
Charleston's $125 million comprehensive fundraising initiative. We are working closely with the
College of Charleston Foundation to grow and manage the endowment. We have a close working
relationship with both the Foundation and the senior administrative leadership at the College of
Charleston. Our goal is to secure pledges and commitments of $2.5 million by the end of 2018, with
some of the money coming in over time as multi-year and planned gifts.
