April 2015 Donate Now Werner drawing in ACBA’s collection The Byrne-Diderot Library is pleased to announce the acquisition of an original drawing by Christopher Werner. Werner was a prominent and successful ironworker in the mid-19th century, whose contributions in iron are recognizable throughout Charleston. They include the Sword Gates at 32 Legare St., porticos at the John Rutledge House, spear-headed railing at Porter’s Lodge, and ornamental ironwork enclosure at Bethany Cemetery and many others. The drawing in pen and pencil depicts designs for two fences and gates. 19th Century drawings such as this are rare to find due to the ephemeral nature of paper and the fact that they were considered part of the working process towards a final product. However, they are uniquely valuable primary resources for students of the built environment. The drawing is currently at the shop of L.L. Biggs where it is being professionally conserved and appraised. The next step will be to procure protective framing, so that the drawing can be on display for students and visitors. The library is asking for donations to accomplish this. Please contact Jennifer France at [email protected] to make a donation. I was recruited by John Paul Huguley, who came to me with an idea for a new school he was starting. I was hooked immediately! What is your favorite memory of ACBA? There are so many, but the one that stands out most would have to be the day we awarded diplomas to our first graduating class in 2009. Which trade do you wish you could perfect? All of them! But if I had to pick just one, it would be ironwork. If you could tell a new ACBA student one thing, what would it be? You have made a brilliant choice in selecting ACBA. You will graduate with a first-class liberal arts education and a mastery of artistic building skills that are vitally important, relevant and rare in today’s world. Prof. Jordan Finch coordinated carpentry and timber framing students from every class to participate in the trip. These community service projects near Lexington, VA give complete novices, capable apprentices, and experienced professionals an opportunity to network, learn from one another, and build something truly special for communities in need. This year’s project was to create a new wing to a local domestic violence shelter. Upon arrival, our students quickly set to work and were given the chance to work on some of the more challenging and complex portions of the project. Students from every level were welcomed in to lay out complex posts, compound hips and rafters, and run fit-up teams as final assemblies were made. In every case, our students proved to be more than capable, exceedingly knowledgeable, and possessed a great attitude as they approached their work. Needless to say, this event is a great opportunity to arrange potential internships or employment. Hopefully, this will be the first of many trips to VMI for ACBA’s excellent woodworking department.
