SUPPORTING INFORMATION
TEACHING FELLOW IN DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND CREATIVE CODING
Norwich University of the Arts is a specialist art, design and media University numbering
2000 students and 50 academic staff organised across its Arts and Design, and Media
faculties. Throughout its 170 year history the University has maintained its commitment to
undergraduate teaching with strong links to the creative industries.
In the most recent National Student Survey (NSS) NUA scored higher than all other
specialist HEIs in providing creative arts-focused degrees, and topped the national
university average in all eight categories, with particularly positive results for its ‘learning
resources’, ‘teaching’ and ‘academic support’. Course application rates have exceeded the
sector average for the past 5 years, testifying to the academic reputation of the University
and the quality of its staff and facilities and to the vibrant culture associated with Norwich
and the surrounding regions.
The University is looking to appoint a Teaching Fellow who will champion innovation in
learning and teaching and maximise and exploit the transformative benefits of creative
coding for arts, design, architecture and media pedagogy within the context a specialist arts
University.
The Teaching Fellow will work closely with the Pro Vice-Chancellor, the Deans, Business
Director and colleagues across the University.
During the two year duration of this role, the post holder will be expected to deliver the
following key outcomes:
Year 1
The post holder is expected to work towards professional recognition in the form of an
appropriate level HEA Fellowship subsequent to taking up the appointment.

Conduct a SWOT analysis of current NUA digital provision.

Develop and implement the first phase of a two year plan for digital transformation
and creative coding at NUA based on the preceding analysis.

Successfully lead and manage two Faculty-based staff training projects as part of
University Development Days.

Deliver 260 hours of digital skills teaching across a range of courses at
Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate level.

Deliver 100 hours of training activities for academic and professional services staff
in relation to digital transformation and creative coding in relation to curriculum
delivery.

Deliver 30 hours of practical workshops for Course Leaders on the possibilities and
potentials of emergent technologies and social media to enhance course
organisation and management.

Deliver 30 hours of practical workshops for students on the possibilities and
potentials of emergent technologies and social media to enhance creative practice
and employability.

Develop and deliver a lecture series on the themes of digital transformation and
creative coding for arts, design, architecture and media higher education.

Lead a programme of digital development to include appropriate bespoke content
for all University courses and train staff in the content management and futureproofing of these assets.

To foster the exploration of digital art, design, architecture and media scholarship,
methods, tools and networked forms of communication through a series of lectures
for staff and students.
Year 2

Implement the second phase of a two year plan for digital transformation and
creative coding at NUA which will focus on sustainable development in digital and
code-based skills.

Successfully initiate and manage two cross-Faculty staff training projects as part of
University Development Days.

Deliver 260 hours of digital skills teaching across a range of courses at
Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate level.

Deliver 75 hours of training activities for academic and professional services staff in
relation to digital transformation and creative coding in relation to curriculum
delivery.

Deliver 30 hours of practical workshops for staff on the sustainable use of emergent
technologies and social media to enhance course organization and management.

Deliver 30 hours of practical workshops for students on the possibilities and
potentials of emergent technologies and social media to enhance creative practice
and employability.

Review digital course content for all University courses and mentor staff in the
content enhancement and future development of these assets.

Conduct a SWOT analysis and summarise progress made against targets identified
in relation to digital transformation and creative coding at NUA; This summary, with
recommendations to be presented to the Senior Management Team of the
University.
JOB DESCRIPTION

Based primarily in the Digital Design area which
comes under the direction of the Pro ViceChancellor (Academic) while also working with
students from across all subject areas of the two
University Faculties of Arts and Design and Media
REPORTS TO:
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic)
JOB PURPOSE :
Champion innovation in learning and teaching and maximise and exploit the
transformative benefits of creative coding for arts, design, architecture and media
pedagogy within the context a specialist arts University.
Consult, contribute and help implement a strategic vision for digital transformation and
creative coding at NUA.
Support academic and professional services staff in understanding and utilising the
combined opportunities offered by creative coding in order to focus evolutionary and
revolutionary approaches to teaching and learning across a range of platforms and
media.
Contribute to curriculum development and engage staff in the debates relevant to
sustaining contemporary teaching and learning across a range of established and
innovative practices, including online learning and teaching technologies appropriate to a
specialist HE context.
Work with others to develop and enhance the delivery of enterprise and
entrepreneurship within courses and liaise with the Ideas Factory to contribute to digital
projects as required.
Work with others to develop and enhance research and scholarly activities, encouraging
networked forms of communication and digital arts scholarship, methods and tools.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic and managerial duties
Under the direction of the line manager, the job will entail the following:
Project Development





Lead and manage projects within the specific area of responsibility.
Contribute to and help to implement a strategic vision for digital transformation
and creative coding at NUA.
Explore new ways for NUA staff and students to develop their practice through
emergent technological and social media tools.
Consult with staff on digital scholarly projects.
Encourage the exploration of digital art, design, architecture and media
scholarship, methods, tools and networked forms of communication.
Teaching, Tutorial and Assessment responsibilities





Teaching responsibilities will include participating in tutorials, seminars, group
critiques and development and delivery of a development programme for
undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Participation at all levels within the University community.
To ensure dissemination of good practice within the University in relation to
teaching, learning and assessment within the context of creative coding.
Initiate and participate in tutorials, seminars and group critiques
Development and delivery of technical workshops.
Administrative responsibilities



Participation in administration on a day-to-day level as directed by the line
manager.
Attend meetings within the area or within the University as required.
Identify and pursue funding opportunities to enhance learning and teaching at the
University.
Budget, finance and resource responsibilities



Manage relevant budgets in accordance with the Financial Regulations.
Work collaboratively with central resource managers, ensuring value for money
and a high quality student experience.
Provide budgetary and resource information to the line manager, Faculty and
other managers, relating to the post holder’s areas of responsibility.
Committees


Participate as a member of course approval and review panels as required.
To attend institutional committees and working groups as directed by the line
manager, with particular emphasis on the University’s Learning and Teaching
Committee.






GENERAL INFORMATION
Terms and Conditions of Appointment
On appointment, the successful candidate will receive a full statement of terms and
conditions for Academic staff.
Duties:
The duties and responsibilities are outlined in the job description contained in the post
details pack.
Starting Date:
This post is available as a two year fixed term post from 1st September 2015.
Hours of Work:
The standard hours of work for academic staff is 35 hours per week. The hours of work for
this post are indicated on the job description.
Salary:
The salary will be on an incremental scale at Grade 8 from £38,511 to £45,954 per annum.
Please note that it is the expectation that candidates will be appointed at the bottom of the
salary scale.
Annual Leave:
There is an annual holiday entitlement of 35 days, plus 8 statutory. In addition, the
University may grant up to 4 concessionary days leave per year when the University is
closed.
Superannuation:
This post is superannuable under the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.
Interview Expenses
Reasonable travel and incidental expenses incurred in attending the interview will be
reimbursed, subject to prior approval. You will be required to provide receipts for expenses
claimed. If you are offered the position and decline the offer, expenses will not be
reimbursed.
