SPRING BREAK March 30th—April 3rd
The month of March is a busy time in our JT office as we are preparing staff work loads and student timetables for the 2015-16
school year. Thanks to all those students and parents who
returned their registration form on time. Your assistance will
make timetabling and scheduling easier for the office staff.
Payment for many school activities including graduation, class
fees, student fees can be done on line through Schools cash
online, an online payment system that JTC is piloting this year. Visit our school website for more details of
how to register for School Cash Online.
Parent/teacher and student interviews take place March 24 from 3:40 -7:00 pm. Please check out our website
at http://johntaylor.sjsd.net for the online registration procedures.
Progress reports will be mailed home only for students with marks below 60% which will also include an
attendance profile and information on registering for parent teacher interviews. All parents can access the
Power School Parent portal by going to our website. If you have difficulty with your user name or password,
please contact our office at 888-8930.

On Friday, Feb. 20th, John Taylor’s Dream Catcher students, spent a day at this year’s 46th edition of the
Festival du Voyageur. Their day was filled with great music, amazing foods and wondrous sights, they had no
choice but to re-embody the spirit of the voyageurs, Métis and First Nations people.
The coming month will see our basketball and hockey teams heading into playoffs, come out and support the
teams in their run for a conference championships and bids to provincials. Several spring sport teams will be
starting or have started practicing for what we hope to be an early spring. Track and Field( after spring break),
Rugby (Monday nights), Handball (first week of March), Soccer (first week in March), ultimate frisbee, beach
volleyball, and badminton( first week of March) will all be getting started in the next two months. For more
info or tryout times and dates contact one of our PE staff for more information.
Grade 11 and 12 out of school physical education hours (75) are due May 15th and modules will also need to
be completed by this date. Grade 11 and 12 in school physical education has started their outings to
community venues that will include St. James Centennial Pool, Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club, Silver
Heights Archery Range and Academy West Bowling.
Upcoming intramural sports include badminton and floor hockey. A few up coming highlights of other PE classes will be cross-country skiing, table tennis, snowshoeing, skating, and combative games. The sustainable
wilderness classes will also be busy in the coming month with trips currently being planned for a variety of
outdoor adventures.

The grade 9 English teachers have been working with their students to better
prepare them for the workforce. This is being done by ensuring students’ social
media accounts and email addresses are professional in nature. As well, students
are also working on résumé and cover letter writing. This is a continuation of the
Career Life and Exploration credit that students’ math teachers started with them in
the first semester.
Additionally, grade 9 teachers will soon be administering the second of two diagnostic tests which
measures how students’ literacy has progressed throughout the year. There are a number of writing
contests that students can enter. If interested, see Mr. Marquart for more information.
Can't study math? Not true!
Studying for math is all about practicing!
Every student has math work in his or her binder. The actual work and
solutions can be covered, and the problems redone.
Parents can be most effective in asking their child to "show me how this math work is done”. When
your daughter or son shows someone else how to solve the problem much reflection and review
transpires! The very act of demonstrating math skills is a learning experience.
Students should regularly review their notes, continue to redo the questions, and seek extra help
from their teacher. Students can also check Edmodo to review past lessons on line. Teachers often
give out reviews before tests, as students complete them they are really studying for math at the
same time!

MARCH MATHLETIC MADNESS!
Attention all students signed up for Mathletics. March is Mathletic Madness!
For every correct answer on Mathletic lessons, tests and live competitions, you
earn points towards prizes (including a tablet) in the national competition. At
John Taylor we will have weekly draws for a $5 canteen credit, T-shirts, water
bottles and more. The highest point leader from JT at the end of March will
receive a grand prize of a TI-84 graphing calculator valued at $180.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
In response to feedback from parents, teachers and students we felt that it was time to develop our
own policy around what BYOD looks like at JT. We started the process by meeting with our Student
Advisory committee considering what is being done in other school divisions, provinces and
countries. We created a draft policy which we then shared with all school staff. Staff provided
feedback and the policy was refined further. The finished product will then be shared with our
Parent Council in April. Please feel free to contact the JT administration if you have any questions or
require further information.

Bring Your Own Device Policy
Rationale
BYOD is a privilege and not a right and is intended to enhance the curriculum.

John Taylor Collegiate recognizes the benefits to learning that a BYOD program can be. It is the
intention of this policy to facilitate and support the use of devices in school. As such, student use
of a personally-owned device must support the instructional activities currently occurring in the
school environment.

Students must ensure that personal-devices are charged. Devices may not be charged in the
classroom.

The use of a personal device is not to be a distraction in any way to teachers or students.
Personal devices must not disrupt class or private study areas in any way.

The BYOD policy falls under our internet acceptable use policy with which all students must
agree to and comply.

Students will be responsible for the correct care, security and safety of all personal devices when
in school.

Students shall not distribute or possess pictures, video or any other material relating to students
or staff. Distribution can be as small as emailing/texting to one person or as large as posting
images or videos online.

Consequences
First Incident
The student will receive a verbal warning and the device will be confiscated by the teacher
until the end of the period.
Second Incident
The device will be confiscated into the care of administration until a parent/guardian comes to
the school for a conference to review the school policy. Parents/guardians and students must
then sign a form stating that they understand that any subsequent violations will result in the
student losing BYOD privileges.
Repeated Incidents
Repeated incidents will result in a range of consequences that may include but are not limited
to further loss of privileges, an interview with an administrator, meeting with parents, and/or
suspension.
Students shall not distribute or possess pictures, video or any other material relating to students or staff. (Distribution
can be as small as emailing/texting to one other person or as large as posting images or video online). This behaviour
will result in an immediate referral to the office.
Students must complete any work that may be affected by the confiscation.
