The final weeks of the school year are upon us but things are
not slowing down at John Taylor. There are so many things
taking place in the next few weeks including preparing for
final, provincial, and school based exams and assessments.
Good luck to our Advanced Placement students who started
writing their exams this week and continue next week as well.
Most students are confident with their skills and indicated that
they were well prepared for the first week of exams.
Well done grade 12 AP students.
Congratulations to the cast and crew of John Taylor’s musical Guys and Dolls. Approximately 70
students took part in this production which is a fantastic school initiative that connects students to
our school, develops new friendships, breaks down grade barriers and adds to an already great
school atmosphere at John Taylor. Special thanks to Ms Carter and Ms Botincan for their leadership
in directing and producing their first musical. To Ms Morris, your contributions and long hours do
not go unnoticed, thank you. A huge thanks to Mr. Hamilton for conducting the pit band and to Ms
Krahn for designing and creating the sets. A great team effort.
Thank you Ms Peters and Ms Paragg for organizing the Earth Day community clean up. Forty JT
students collected the remnants of the winter. Dozens of bags of garbage were collected and seeing
a clean school ground and community should give every person a great sense of pride.
A reminder to all grade 12 students, that they must complete their physical education credit in order
to graduate. We have a small list of students who have not completed their course work yet. All
physical education out of school course work must be completed by May 15h.
Have a great spring!

Heritage Fair
Ms. Armistead, Ms. Peters and Mr. Hamilton would like to congratulate all
second semester social studies students on their hard work with Heritage Fair
this semester. Projects were encouraged to be on the topic of Canadian Social
Justice and students demonstrated a wealth of in-depth research on this
important topic. Winners from both semesters were awarded a gold ribbon and
will be provided an opportunity to attend a filed trip to the Canadian Museum of Human Rights.
Congratulations to all participants!
MUNA
Model United Nations is an International simulation activity of the
United Nations Assembly organized by the Rotary Club. Monica M.
and Gwen M. were selected to represent Malaysia and participated
in debate on major issues such as the fight against ISIS, The Ebola
epidemic, disarmament of nuclear weapons and a the movement
toward a New International Economic Order. MUNA was an excellent
learning experience for our students.
The dates have been set for the grade 12 provincial exam (June 1st to 4th)
and the school based exams for grades 9-11. Those not in grade 12 will
commence their English exam on the 11th of June and complete the first section the following day.
The second section of the exam will start on June 15th and conclude on the 17th. The first section
requires students to read a variety of texts and respond to questions about them in extended paragraphs. The latter section requires them to write an essay or alternative form, if in grade 11, about
the chosen theme of the exam. The exams are modelled after the provincial to better prepare them
for it.
The English department has also organized a field trip, as part of the Career Life and Exploration
credit, on May 13th to the Red River Exhibition Park for a construction expo for 38 grade 9 students.
Several student permission forms are still outstanding, which may result in them not being allowed
to attend.

At the end of February, close to 100 students wrote national math contests. For the Pascal contest
(grade 9), Katia M, Michaela G, Sam H and Mackenzie H scored the highest marks. For Cayley
(grade 10), Colin J, Emanuel A, Michelle G and Taylor S were our highest achievers. Gwen S, Jack
W and Kevin Olson were John Taylor’s best in Grade 11 (Fermat). We are still awaiting news on the
Grade 12 contest. Many thanks to all participants.
Congratulations to grade nine students HAILEY B.
and IRELAND V. who represented John Taylor at
the SJSD Science Fair on Wednesday April 8. Their
project titled "Math Through the Ages" explored
different learning modalities in mathematics and
how age can influence learning via those methods.
Well done, ladies! We are proud of you!
Want something exciting to do this
summer?
Let’s Talk Science is a group from University of
Manitoba that works to deliver a wide variety of
meaningful science, technology, engineering and
mathematics (STEM) learning experiences in both
school and community settings. This summer (July 8th-10th) they are offering their first mini-camp for
Grade 11 & 12 students. Participants will get a glimpse into the world of forensic science doing
hands-on investigations using university equipment. This is a great opportunity that you do not
want to miss! Do not hesitate to register, because there are only 80 spots available for students
across the province. You can get more information from Mr. Wiebe or Ms. Shepherd. You can also
go to the Let’s Talk Science site at http://outreach.letstalkscience.ca/umanitoba.html. Please see the
brochure (page 7) and a link to the google doc registration form attached to the newsletter.

John Taylor Collegiate Students Raising Awareness of Distracted Driving
On Wednesday , May 20th at 1:30 p.m., the students from the T.A.D.D.
group at John Taylor Collegiate, located at 470 Hamilton Avenue, will
be enacting a mock vehicle crash to raise awareness on the dangers of
distracted driving.
To make the event as realistic as possible, the mock crash site will
utilize a damaged vehicle provided by Manitoba Public Insurance, as
well as student actors from the John Taylor drama class.
Members of the Winnipeg Police Service School Resource Unit, along
with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service will be in attendance. A
simulated emergency response exercise will be performed to
demonstrate how quickly a tragedy can occur when drivers make the
choice to utilize their phones while driving.
Following the exercise, emergency services responders will address
the student body on the importance of safe driving to prevent the
wide-spread devastation and consequences that occur when drivers
are distracted.
