John Taylor Collegiate held a Used Clothing Drive in support
of Earth Day, Sustainable Actions, and Awareness for our Free
the Children Campaign. If everyone recycled just one t-shirt, it
would save 210 billion gallons of water and eliminate 1 million
pounds of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere. Our JT clothing
drive brought in hundreds of kilograms of donations for the
Salvation Army. Our Free the Children campaign continues to
raise money for our March 2016 trip to Nicaragua.

The countdown to exam week, graduation and summer

writing their provincial math exams this week. Exam week is
June 18-24 and a copy of the exam schedule is attached
and on our Website. Preparation is the key to success.
With that in mind, it is never too early to start studying for
your finals and organizing your time. Reminder that students
who perform poorly on their final exams will be required to
spend time studying for the exam again and repeat either the entire exam or the components of
the exam that they had performed poorly on. Good Luck and prepare well.
Congratulations to the staff and students who performed at and organized a great week of
Visual and Performing Arts concerts last week. The student work/performances in Band, Choir,
Dance, Visual Art and Photography were brilliant. Thanks to Ms Carter, Ms Botincan, Ms Krahn,
Mr. Kutcy and Mr. Hamilton for organizing these event.
Congratulations to all our athletic award winners from our Athletic Banquet on June 3rd. There

Study Tips
The most important thing about studying is your attitude: Think Positively!
Plan your study
- Keep a planning agenda. Try to anticipate deadlines – don’t leave until the “last minute” - it’s easier on you. It’s easier
to do the next assignment after a class while the subject and your interest are still fresh.
- Be realistic.
- Decide what you are going to get done and the order you are going to do it.
- Prioritize your work to make sure you have time for the things that are most important.
- If something is overwhelming, break it down into smaller parts.
- Always allow more time than you think you will need.
The right study setting helps!
- Make studying your “business” do it efficiently.
- Keep regular study hours.
- Find a good place to study.
- Be comfortable; face away from and avoid distractions (TV, phone).
- Assemble needed materials (assignments, books, paper, pencil, pen) on cleared study desk or work table.
Know your learning style
- Visual learners learn best by seeing the material (take notes, use flash cards, charts, diagrams, form pictures in your
mind, and make use of color in your notes).
- Auditory learners learn best by hearing the information (read aloud, have discussions, listen to tapes, review information out loud, use memory tricks, use acronyms).
- Kinaesthetic learners learn best by hands on learning opportunities (role play, labs, hands on activities).
- As a rule, the wider variety of methods you use while studying, the more you will remember.
- Know when and how to take short breaks (get a drink, get up and take a stretch).
When studying for tests or exams:
- Know what is going to be covered.
- Have all your reading done ahead of time.
- Know the meaning of bold and italic print words in text.
- Write down names, dates, formulas, definitions on index cards for review practice.
- Pay close attention to the key information reviewed in class.
- Make sure you know the answers to all the review questions.
- Explain your understanding in your own words.
- Look for logical connections.
- Review often and review aloud to move information from your short term memory to your long term memory.
- When you have difficulty, ask your teacher for help.
Note-Taking
Note-taking is an important key to success in Studying and Learning. It’s your personal record of what you
need to know; helps you concentrate in class, includes auditory and visual learning, aids recall for review.
Taking notes in class:
- Keep alert and pay attention.
- Listen with a Purpose.
- Don’t try to write everything down; listen for key words (What is it all about?).
- Make sure you understand the words you hear and write.
- Listen for clues, such as “the 4 causes were” or “to sum up.”
- If class gets into discussion, note any major conclusions.
- If the teacher highlights a point (writes it on white board), put it in your notes.
Taking notes from text:
Have a plan to show importance (use point form, graphic organizer to show relationships).
- Take notes that are easy to read.
- Write clearly, date, and include headers that clearly identify material (source, page, chapter).
- Leave space (write on every second line or white space on graphic) to add to your notes.
- Leave margins to the right of your notes to identify key words in the margins for quick reference.
Get the big picture first - what does the writer have in mind?
- Pay attention to the headings, sub headings, graphics.
- Make summary statements or outline essential key points so what you are noting makes sense.
- List supporting details.
- Understand the why (relationships, connections).
- Do you have the information to explain your understanding?
Go over your class or text notes as soon as possible to make necessary revisions or ensure you understand what you have
written. If you do have some questions check your source or ask your teacher to clarify.
