During the 2008/2009 campaign, Hajduk Split of the Croatian First League sacked their head coach after a series of poor play and intense management, fan and media pressure. The situation and environment was quite difficult. I was named Head Coach and immediately made positive changes in all areas. The team responded with 10 consecutive victories, which is still a Hajduk Split record today in its 102 year history. We turned a bad situation into a very successful season, finishing the 2008/2009 Croatian First League in 2nd place, League Cup Finalists and Winners of the Croatian First League Indoor Championships. How has working with distinguishedcoachessuch as Leo Beenhakker and Henk ten Cate, while playing 3 years in the Netherlands for SV Vitesse, helped develop you as a trainer today? When I look back today, my 3 years in the Netherlands were extremely important not only as a player but also for all of the things I have learnt and incorporated into my coaching philosophy today. We all know that the Dutch Football School is one of the most respected in the world, if not the most respected, especially when we talk about young player development and a modern, offensive team football that is necessary today to succeed. I had the privledge to work with great coaches such as Leo Beenhakker and Henk ten Cate. I learnt a tremendous amount not only from the training sessions but also how to deal with other players, club management and the media. We had the utmost respect and professionalism towards each other. I played in over 70 games in 3 years with SV Vitesse in the Dutch top league and was named team captain in several games, quite an honor for a foreign player. In my training philosophy today, I have incorporated an Offensive Style that Dutch teams practice. I also have to mention several great Croatian coaches I have worked with. They are also much respected in the football world and include Tomislav Ivić, Stanko Poklepović, Josip Skoblar and Miroslav "Ćiro" Blažević. JPA World, 2nd Floor, 17 Waterloo Place, London, SW1 Y4AR T. 00386 40 511 974, E. [email protected] JPA WORLDWIDE Can you talk more about your playing style? I believe in Offensive Football but most importantly maximising the individual qualities of all players and then adjusting and developing tactics, team formations and a style of play according to strengths. I also believe in high-pressure, high-paced football. The defence is positioned high towards the centre circle whilst the forwards and midfielders apply an intense team pressure on the opposing club. Excellent physical conditioning , team execution and timing is vital for this type of football. How can a coach influence a game? This is the difference between a winning coach and an ordinary coach - the ability to read the play and make quality and timely decisions during a game with your coaching staff. Correct player substitutions, tactical changes and motivation can dramatically change the course of a game and lead to excellent results. You are a Scout for the Croatian Senior "A" National Team that is qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Can you talk about game preparation, tactics and knowing an opponent? It is crucial to know the opponent. Only then is it possible to develop a tactical game plan that will take advantage of an opponents weaknesses and eliminate their strengths including details such as set pieces (corner and free kicks) during a game. How has playing at the highest level such as UEFA Champions League and Croatian Senior "A" National Team matches developed you as a trainer? It is the most valuable and precious honour that few players experience, playing with and against the best players in the world, led by the best coaches in the world, at the highest elite level. There is much to learn from these matches. What are the best ways to continuously learn and keep up with the changing and developing modern football tactics and training methods today? I follow new tactical and training methods by visiting other European club training sessions, communicating with other international coaching colleagues, attending coaching seminars and most importantly I am in constant contact with Croatian players in big clubs such as Luka Modrić at Real Madrid, Darijo Srna at Shakhtar Donetsk, Ivan Perišić at Borussia Dortmund, Danijel Pranjić at Sporting Club Portugal, Stipe Pletikosa at FC Rostov, Nikola Kalinić and Ivan Strinić at Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. JPA World, 2nd Floor, 17 Waterloo Place, London, SW1 Y4AR T. 00386 40 511 974, E. [email protected] JPA WORLDWIDE How is it best today to communicate, motivate, discipline, lead a club? One of my main advantages is the psychological approach I take with players. Open communication, discipline and mutual respect are vital when leading a team. It is also important to remain calm and dignified when winning and to learn lessons and correct mistakes from losses. How do you develop a game plan for the season? A detailed plan is essential. The goal is to play Offensive Football. The focus is to win each game, to be the best, develop team play by maximising each player and also having alternative plans. How is it best to deal with the pressures and delicate relationships between players, coaching staff, club management, fans and the media? Knowledge creates authority which is important when leading a big club. It helps with the pressures in the game. What is best about being a top level coach? Developing players, the people, competition and winning. What can you bring to a club? The highest level of professionalism, organisation, expertise, Offensive Football – an attractive playing style, maximum individual playerand team quality, football education for all players especially young players, and results.
