Realising the shortcomings of relying heavily on centralised summative examinations, the Malaysian government made a move to decentralised assessments through School-based Assessment (SBA). In line with this, the SBA Kit is developed to help teachers of the primary and secondary schools improve their professionalism in carrying out discretionary judgments in this new assessment system. The SBA KIT contains DSK-DSP combo, The Dos & Don’ts of Assessment Format, Text Complexity Modules and Samples of Instruments to promote HOTS. This workshop aims to introduce teachers to the overall use of the SBA Kit. Exposure will be given on how to produce sample instruments accordingly apart from enabling the teachers to map evidences against the relevant skills and topics. 4 30th April 2015 SITC Hall, UPSI ESL ACADEMIC Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in ESL Learning: Inculcating and Assessing Guest Speakers PROFESSOR DATUK DR. To achieve this, the country’s education system is experiencing a paradigm shift where the focus of the education is no more to produce students who are able to restate facts. Instead, the prime intent of the Malaysian education system now is to develop and enhance students’ intellectual capacity. This can only be achieved through a system that aims at developing the students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). To achieve this, teachers play a crucial role in guiding the students, especially with the introduction of PT3 in schools. In line with this, this seminar is organized as a platform to further enhance teachers’ understanding of HOTS, especially those involved in the teaching of English as a Second Language (ESL). 1.
