Double Entry Journal Directions
A Double Entry Journal is an organizer you can use to write down your thoughts while you read.
On the left side, copy quotes or ideas from the text. On the right side, write your thoughts or questions that
go with those quotes or ideas. Below is an example. Make a larger one for yourself on a blank sheet of paper.
Book Title:
The City of Ember
Quote or Idea from the Text
(with a page number):
My Thoughts, Question, or Connection
(in my own words):
Examples:
Examples:
“Grown people did their work, and younger people, until
they reached the age of twelve, went to school. On the last
day of their final year, which was called Assignment Day,
they were given jobs to do.” (p. 5)
Text-Text Connection: This is exactly like The Giver. In that
story, kids get their job assignments at age 12, too.
“Someone tapped her on the shoulder. Startled, she
turned and saw Doon behind her… ‘Will you trade with
me?’ he asked.” (p. 15)
I am so glad that Lina is going to trade jobs with Doon! I
think this means that they might become friends as the
story continues.
