Dear King-Westwood Jaguar Families,
As I listened to the sweet voices of our first and second
grade students at their spring musical last Friday, I was
reminded of how very fast our children grow and change
into adolescents, teenagers and then young adults. Having
two children of my own, now 23 and 16, I know firsthand,
there have been times when I wish I would have had more
time or could have slowed down the clock. Unfortunately
we cannot turn back the hands of times, and there is a
window of opportunity available to us to assist our children
in acquiring certain skills. Many of the foundational skills
in reading and math need to be mastered before moving on
to the higher-level skills.
Now is the time! Elementary school is the time to solidify
the foundational skills and make sure our children are
strong readers and mathematical thinkers. Please help your
child in this endeavor by ensuring they have a library card
for the Kalamazoo Public Library, and making sure they
visit the library on a regular basis this summer. Please also
make sure your child is reading each and every day. If you
have a computer at home, give your child the opportunity to
experience and practice his/her math skills on websites like
Khan Academy and others. If you do not have a computer
at home, children may use the computers at the Kalamazoo
Public Libraries for this purpose.
Our goal at King-Westwood is for ALL of our students
to have a Kalamazoo Public Library card and to use it
frequently! Please join in our commitment to make this
happen!
Thank you to our wonderful PTO and parents for spoiling
our staff during Staff Appreciation Week! We appreciated
the surprises, treats and food. Thank you so much for your
continued support of our staff.
I’ve got spirit, yes I do! I’ve got spirit, how about you? I
remember that cheer from my high school cheerleading
days back in Aurora, NE, but today I am encouraging our
families to show their school spirit for King-Westwood
and Kalamazoo Public Schools by putting a sign in their
yard. If you would like to show your school spirit, please
stop by the school office and pick-up a sign, or ask one of
the adults on duty outside in the morning or afternoon and
they will save you a few steps and give you one of the
signs in our front yard. Thank you for your support! 
As always, I am available to meet or talk with parents at
any time. Please don’t hesitate to call, e-mail or stop by.
I look forward to seeing you around school.
Best Regards,
Sandie Lundquist, Principal
VISITORS - Please
remember all visitors MUST
identify themselves at the door to
be buzzed in and then stop in the
office upon entering the building.
Visitors who will be going beyond
the office will require a name tag, even if a teacher is
expecting you. This is for everyone’s safety and to
keep track of who is in the building in case of an
emergency. Thank you!
The mission of our school, a partnership of family, staff and community, is to ensure that each student develops an
academic foundation and unique talents; students will become lifelong learners and responsible citizens through
inspired, personalized, innovative instruction in a safe, creative and caring environment.
Reporting your child’s
absence from school is
easy!
You can call and leave a message at our
absence line at:
269-337-0610, then press 2.
You can send a note to school with your
child.
You can also e-mail us to report your child’s
absence from school.
Please e-mail our secretary at
[email protected] to report
your child’s absence.
In all cases, please include your child’s
name, teacher, the date your child will
be/was absent and the reason for your
child’s absence.
All absences are considered “unexcused”
unless we receive a phone call, note or email from the parent/guardian.
Please do not call if your child will be tardy.
We are looking for parent volunteers to help stuff
the Jaguar folders every Monday morning. Whether
you can make it some Mondays, once in a while on a
Monday, or every Monday, we would love to have you.
Please contact the school office at 269-337-0610
with questions or e-mail Ms. Lundquist at
[email protected] or just show up at
9:15 a.m. on any Monday and check in at the office.
We will also be looking for volunteers for the 2015-16
school year, as well! We hope you can join us!

Parents are welcome
to attend!
Please meet at KCHS.
Please make sure your child knows the afterschool plans in the morning before they come to
school. Our school office gets extremely busy at
the end of the day and a last minute call for
changes increases the chance we will not be able
to make the change before the child leaves the
building for the day.
Thank you! 

Market Day Pick Up
Thursday, May 21
5:00-6:00 p.m.
King-Westwood Cafeteria
Any questions, call
Stacie Querfurth 269-720-8847
During the week of May 26th, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade
students will be learning about fiber and creating
their own Tie Dye t-shirt in Art.
Kindergarten – 2nd grade will be working on art
games and working at different centers.
I am asking each student to bring in one plain
white t-shirt on their art day that week. The shirt
does not have to be new (cotton t-shirts work best).
It is also helpful if they bring their shirt in a plastic
bag.
Thanks,
Mrs. DeNoon
