Oh what a night
Thank you to all our wonderful supporters who came along
to Karinya House’s annual Mother’s Day Ball or sent a
donation in lieu of attendance. What a fantastic night! Our
new home will soon be a reality thanks to the generous
support we have received, raising $26,174.
Expertly emceed by Michael Cooney and with over 300
people in attendance, we were particularly pleased to have
representatives from all the political groups currently serving
the Canberra community in the ACT Legislative Assembly. We
also had great support from the following corporate entities:
the Canberra Southern Cross Club, Icon Water,
PricewaterhouseCoopers and Bellchambers Barrett and of
course and most valued by us, are our ongoing members,
those of you who have been with us from the beginning and
continue to support us consistently.
The food was outstanding this year, we mixed it up a bit with
antipasto platters on the tables when guests took their seats
and for dessert, sweet petit fours with tea and coffee. The
feedback so far has indicated that this was well received. Our
live entertainment, The Stilettos, sang and danced to
everything from the Andrew’s Sisters to Nina Simone to the
Village People. It was a great night all round!
For the first time this year we had a multi-media
presentation, following Karinya’s theme of Home, Hope,
Horizon. It was created for us by ‘Cry Havoc’ and facilitated by
Stewart Brooker from the PCYC. We are so grateful for this, it
made such an impact. It showed the original houses and how
we started, followed by one Client’s personal journey and
finished with our plans for the future: Home. Hope. Horizon.
Our Director, Marie-Louise Corkhill, spoke eloquently about
our building project and we announced our newly re-branded
Project 1000 as ‘Friends of Karinya House’.
Our auctions as always, were a highlight of the evening, with
several outstanding items with great diversity, including a
custom made surfboard and a welding helmet. The painting
by Elizabeth Corkhill Knight of mother and baby, entitled
‘Eternal Bond’, created a buzz and went under the hammer
at $2,000. This year’s offering from Clonakilla was a magnum
of the renowned 2013 Shiraz Viognier, apparently known in
the industry as the ‘Epic’, it created a stoush between two
tables and was finally obtained, with a tour and tasting
thrown in, by one of our fabulous Volunteers for $2,200.

our Management Committee
Dear friends of Karinya House,
The days are becoming cooler but the warmth and
generosity of the Canberra community continues to be
witnessed. This is a fact that I continue to be inspired by
and am so very grateful for. I hope you, and those near to
you, are well as we head into our coldest season and often
the hardest time of year for our Clients.
I am thrilled to report that the 2015 Mother’s Day Ball was
our most successful to date! It is always a great opportunity
to socially connect with our wonderful supporters. The Ball
was, of course, a success in terms of fundraising, however
it was also a great opportunity to raise our profile. There
were many people present who were being introduced to
Karinya House for the first time, as well as many old friends
and long term supporters whom we rely on and value for
their ongoing friendship and support. May I thank Michael
Cooney for giving his time and being our special emcee,
and our live entertainment, The Stilettos, who were a
fantastic addition to the evening.
Given we have just celebrated Mother’s Day, this Karinya
News has a strong Mother’s Day theme. I would like to take
this opportunity to thank our varied supporters for their
generosity in contributing to our annual Mother’s Day
Appeal. The Appeal garners more support from year to year
and the donations to date have been so very generous. As
this newsletter goes to print, the Appeal has raised a total
of $17,250. This is an overwhelming result! Our sincere
gratitude.
As well as the financial support we receive around Mother’s
Day, I also acknowledge the practical support we receive in
the form of gifts, food and hampers for our Clients. These
items are donated each year by the wider community and
are distributed to our grateful residential and outreach
Clients. We thank all those who have contributed in this
way. Our mothers felt truly special on Mother’s Day thanks
to your practical generosity.
We are entering a new era for our organisation as we
embark on the next chapter in our history; our purpose built
facility becoming a reality. This is both an exciting and
daunting project! We look forward to keeping you updated
on the progress of the new Karinya House; the opportunity
to house a greater number of Clients in an environment
more conducive and productive for both Clients and Staff. I
am very grateful for the assistance to date from private and
government bodies that have aided Karinya in getting us to
the point of “turning the soil”.
of moving away from these violent situations with their
unborn baby and seek the support from us. 60% of Karinya
House’s Clients have experienced domestic violence. They
are truly among the most vulnerable and at risk women in
our community and without the advice, counselling,
practical assistance and support services that Karinya
provides, they and their babies would face a very uncertain
future. The need has never been greater and the challenge
is ongoing to provide an effective and sustainable service
which really makes a difference in their lives.
May I encourage you to visit our website at
www.karinyahouse.asn.au if you have not done so recently!
It has been updated to reflect our rich history and engage
the community online as we move forward. It will provide
necessary information and updates on our service and also
details of how you can continue to support our work. It is
also timely as the end of financial year is upon us and your
online donations via the website are tax deductible. Please
give as generously as you can as we plan to accommodate
and support our Clients in our exciting new premises.
As always, a Friends of Karinya House (formerly Project
1000) donation form is included in this issue of Karinya
News to pass on to friends and family. Existing Project 1,000
subscribers will automatically become a Friend of Karinya
House.
Alternatively, you may wish to take advantage of our new
online donation facility on the website. On behalf of the
Management Committee, Staff and Volunteers, I express
our deepest appreciation to you. As you are well aware,
your financial support is vital and ensures we are able to
continue on our life giving journey.
Karinya House Home for Mothers and Babies, is simply
three words.

Warmest regards,
Sarah Kelly

As you are aware, the prevalence of domestic violence in
our society is both sickening and devastating. We care for

End of Financial Year
We need you!
Karinya House’s values of respect, compassion, integrity,
community, excellence, courage and passion have guided
our organisation for more than 17 years of service to some
of the most vulnerable women and children in the Canberra
community and surrounding regions. The women that seek
support from Karinya, experience life’s struggles, that are
often beyond their control…they push their limits…and we
are privileged to journey along the way.
During each and every year since Karinya House began in
1997, we have been unable to accommodate all those who
have contacted our service. In recent years, we have been
working with the ACT Government to develop our vision for
a new Home for Karinya House, to expand the services,
particularly in the availability of accommodation. This new
facility is now under construction, and you can read more
about it on our website: www.karinyahouse.asn.au
Did you know that Karinya House is a not-for-profit
organisation, endorsed by the ATO as a deductible gift
recipient? This means that all donations of $2 and over are
tax deductible.
As we are approaching end of financial year, we are
appealing to you, individuals and businesses, to make a
donation to Karinya House. Karinya House values every
donation received and we guarantee that we use every
dollar we do receive ‘within an inch of its life’, to provide
excellence in service to our Clients, to be welcoming,
compassionate, versatile, respectful, generous and
optimistic…to be a place where our Clients can be at Home.
Where they can see and find Hope. And where they can
seek a new Horizon.
You can donate immediately online via our website:
www.karinyahouse.asn.au. A receipt will be emailed to you
immediately upon making your online donation.
Alternatively, you can use the enclosed ‘Friends of Karinya
House’ donation form. To claim your tax deductible
donation in the 2014-2015 financial year, we must receive
your donation by June 30th 2015. A receipt will be posted
once your donation has been processed.
