Kāya NEWSLETTER Vol. 14

NEWSLETTER—APRIL 2015
A message from Koula
It’s Koula here, I wanted to share with you a few words before I
head off to what is going to be another life changing chapter in
our lives with our baby due at the end of May and my maternity
leave beginning at the end of April.
Kaya has been our life for the last 3 years and it has been the
most amazing yet challenging journey, but I wouldn’t change a
thing. The next few months will bring CRAZY moments of highs
and lows, but I have a saying that I live by “it always works out in
the end. “ I truly believe this and I know it will be okay because
Christian and I have overcome huge hurdles and know we can
do it again. But more importantly, we are very fortunate to have
the most amazing support and love from our family, friends and
team.– Thank you to all of you.
Being pregnant has its own emotional roller coaster. Again, I am
lucky to have people in my life who have experienced pregnancy
and most recently my sister who has a 3 week old little boy, so
I’m making the most of asking a million questions! The biggest
challenge for me was accepting that I, as a person physically and
mentally will change. When these changes began I didn’t know
how to deal with it, I thought I was invincible and could carry on
like the normal Koula does – ha ha – I was wrong. Acceptance was
hard, but I can finally say I have accepted them and am enjoying
this journey. My biggest lesson so far is DO NOT COMPARE
YOURSELF TO OTHERS. Your situation is different, you are
different as a person and your life is different to the person next
to you. With so many differences, why do we constantly try to be
the same? We are not!
For now, it is a short goodbye, as
I will be back and I can’t wait
to share with you the
arrival of our precious
baby!!!!
With our other baby (Kaya Emporium) due to open later this
year, there is so much going on that I’m not sure if I should feel
Koula
excited or scared! It’s hard to imagine looking after a little person,
not coming to work every day and letting go of my big baby…

Our well-loved Reformer beds
Our priority at Kaya is member safety and providing memorable
experiences.
You may have noticed that the state of the vinyl on our
reformer beds is not up to our premium standards. There
has been a prolonged delay in receiving the specialised vinyl
required to reupholster our beds. Over the coming months,
they will progressively be reupholstered. Thank you for your
patience
and understanding
Shoes or no shoes?
For the safety and hygiene of all our members, closed and
covered shoes MUST be worn in our cardio and weights area at
ALL times. This includes members stretching within the areas
pre or post class.
Rose Masters turned her Pilates passion into a profession after
gaining incredible benefits for her mind and body through her
practice, she now loves sharing these with our members whilst
focusing on technique and alignment.
Phoebe Waters discovered the joy that Yoga can bring to life
and has never looked back. She extended her Yoga training with
a bachelor of health science to enhance her understanding of
how the body works. She brings creative flow and a focus on
body alignment into her classes.

Tips to Enhance your Health and Wellbeing
We all feel busy, overwhelmed, snowed under
and a little stressed at times.
Everything moves so fast in this world, we sometimes feel as though we
are being pulled in different directions.
We find that these simple energising practices assist us in feeling calm,
relaxed, energised and ready to face the day ahead!
1.
Drink water when you wake up- this will stimulate your digestion,
try drinking 1 litre upon waking up and notice the difference in your
energy levels during the day
2. Breath- Take 10 deep, full breaths- give your brain more oxygen
and activate your relaxation response. Sometimes a short 5 minute
break where you close your eyes and shut out the world can make
you feel less stressed and anxious
3. Eat protein and plants- These can drastically increase your energy
levels and improve micronutrient intakes- leading to a healthier,
more energised you! Next time reach for a tuna salad instead of a
sugary or salty alternative
4. Move the body- try to incorporate some movement regularly
during the day- this could be a brisk walk outside, walking around
the office and taking the stairs or fitting in a workout at Kaya. This
will improve your respiration, promote healthy muscles and give you
an instant energy fix
5. Remove caffeine- Caffeine is a short term fix for fatigue which
can lead to poor health and sleeping patterns. If you are feeling the
need for a coffee then your body is telling you it is tired and needs
to rest! So rest, choose herbal teas or vegetable juices and enjoy
coffee as a treat and not as a solution
6. Stretch- A 5 minute stretch can immediately increase energy
within your body, you will begin to loosen tight muscles and fascia
which make you feel stiff, unenergised and unmotivated
7. Think about something that makes you smile- When you are tired,
you reinforce it by telling others how you feel- remember that the
mind and body are connected. This disempowering voice will make
you feel worse, so next time you yawn or are reaching for a sugary
snack, think of something that makes you smile
8. Sit up- Your posture can determine your mindset and energy levels,
fatigue and pain can sometimes be mistaken for a need to sit up
straight. 20 minutes of sitting straighter or standing can make a big
difference in your energy levels
9. Phone a friend or visit a colleague- We can instantly be energised
through human connection. If you are having a break, then phone a
friend for a chat or instead of sending an email, walk around to your
colleagues desk and discuss it in person
We’re introducing Pilates Feature Exercises
You may have been noticing certain exercises occurring regularly in classes and
asking why?
Our Pilates Reformer instructors have been focusing on a “Feature Exercise”.
This is a multi-layered exercise progressed through 3-4 weeks in majority of
classes, with options and progressions provided as members increase their
awareness and stability in the exercise.
They are aimed at providing members with a better understanding of mind and
body connection, stability within the body and spine and a sense of confidence
as progressions are executed correctly.
An upcoming Feature Exercise will be Teaser on long box with no straps.
The challenge of the exercise is to hold the alignment of the spine and
pelvis in neutral whilst developing some great core strength! This will also be
incorporated into Pilates Mat classes.
