Welcome to the 18th Annual
Two Harbors Kayak Festival!
In your hands, you hold information about the most unique,
family friendly event to take place on the beautiful shores of Lake
Superior. In it’s 18th year, the Two Harbors Kayak Festival features
the Nationally renowned John Abrahams 18-Mile Marathon, the
Ellen Anderson 10-Mile Race, the Betty’s Pies 5-Mile Race and
Youth Sprint Races.
In addition to the races, you can participate in kayak and standup paddle board (SUP) demos, tours, clinics, and youth activities.
You don’t have to paddle to enjoy this event. There is plenty of
food, fun and more to be found! There is something for everyone
at this one of a kind paddling festival.
Participant Check-in and Reception
Participants can begin check-in and register on Friday, August 7th
at 5:00 pm. All Events Begin at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors,
MN. This is your last chance to pre-register for kayak and SUP
races. All sponsors, racers, tour participants and clinic participants are invited to enjoy a reception at the registration tent on
Friday. Food and beverages will be served.

each age class in the John Abrahams 18-Mile Marathon, the Ellen
Anderson 10 Mile Race, and the Betty’s Pies Race. All racers will
receive a t-shirt and a finisher medallion. Please see the official
race rules regarding cash awards for the John Abrahams 18-Mile
Marathon. All John Abrahams, Ellen Anderson and Betty’s Pies
racers must attend the MANDATORY race meeting Saturday, August 8th, at 8:00 am. If you are not checked in at this meeting,
you will be disqualified from the event. Your registration fees
will not be refunded.
John Abrahams 18-Mile Marathon: Racers paddle from
Burlington Bay to Encampment Island and back in a single or
tandem kayak. A Pro Class is available.

founder! Racers paddle from Burlington Bay, 5 miles to a buoy
marker for the Ellen Anderson Race and back to the Bay.
Betty’s Pies 5-Mile Race:
Paddle from Burlington Bay, 2.5 miles to a buoy at Stewart River
and back to the Bay. Finishers will receive a free slice of pie from
Betty’s Pies!

a buoy. Compete with other paddlers your age. In this race, every
one wins! All youth racers will be recognized during Saturday
evening’s award ceremony.

Races
Major Sponsors
Racers must be 16 years old to participate in the John Abrahams
18-Mile Marathon, the Ellen Anderson 10-Mile Race, and the
Betty’s Pies 5-Mile Race. The John Abrahams 18-Mile Marathon
is NOT open to Stand-Up Paddleboards. Racers must bring the
boat type they selected on the race registration form, along with
Coast Guard approved rescue equipment (i.e., PFD, paddle float,
and bilge pump). If wind speeds exceed 20 mph on Saturday,
August 8th, all on-water Festival events will be held Sunday,
Paddle Clinic for Women: (Saturday only, 2 hours) This clinic is
designed specifically for female paddlers. You’ll learn tips and
techniques to make kayaking safer, more efficient and more fun.
We’ll cover a range of topics on shore and on the water, including outfitting your boat, how to safely enter and exit a kayak
on the beach, paddle stroke techniques and an overview of the
safety equipment needed for kayaking (including a demo of an
assisted rescue.) Come away with more confidence and skills for
all levels of kayakers.
Safety and Rescue Clinic
This clinic is an introduction to basic rescue skills that all sea
kayakers should know and develop. What safety gear should
you carry? How do you use it? Want to learn some “go to” selfrescues and know how to perform an assisted rescue? We will
discuss and demonstrate safety equipment and demonstrate several self-rescues and assisted rescues. Dress for water immersion!
This is your chance to learn, share and practice in a controlled,
but cold, setting!
Festival Activities
No pre-registration is required to participate in festival activities.
For a modest fee of $10, Festival Activities offer something for
everyone! Festival Activities are FREE with a paid registration to
races, clinics or tours.
Kayak & Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Demos: Now is a great
time for adults (16 and over) to try out kayaks and SUPs from a
variety of manufacturers. Kayaks and SUPs will be available for
sale throughout the weekend, with pick-up on Sunday, August
9th.
Brown Bag Fundraiser
Don’t miss the Annual Brown Bag Fundraiser held Saturday from
10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Buy chances to win great prizes donated
by local merchants. All proceeds from the Brown Bag Fundraiser
support the Two Harbors Kayak Festival. The Brown Bag winners
will be announced at 4:15 pm at the Registration Tent. Winners
must check the board and pick up their prizes by Sunday at
noon. Any unclaimed prizes will be re-used for the 2016 Festival.
All proceeds from the brown bag fundraiser go to support the
Two Harbors Kayak Festival, Lake county Rescue Squad and the

SUP Instructional Tour: Explore the very Bays that gave Two Harbors its name. Enjoy Paddleboarding and instruction in the
shelter of Burlington Bay. Once we find our sea legs, it’s off to the
CN loading docks at Agate Bay. Venture out to open water, and
if the conditions are right, feel Lake Superior swells slip beneath
our boards. Experience the activity of a working harbor as we
paddle by ships from around the world.

Sponsored by CN, the THKF has a wide variety of activities to
keep the kiddos busy while mom and dad are playing with the
grown-ups. All Youth Activities are FREE with a paid Festival
