These are the trips and events of various organizations and individuals that are currently planned as of Jujy 1,
2006. Deletions and/or changes to this schedule may be necessary at any time. Additional trips or events will be
posted during the season. Please review this page often for additional trips or further information.
Each trip or event has a trip leader’s or organization’s name and telephone listed with it. Pre-registration
is required for all trips. The number of participants may be limited. Those trips or events that have an
associated cost are so noted. Since our shop may not have the details of each trip or event, please call
the person or organization listed for the information and to register for each trip.
Please note that in order to enhance your paddling enjoyment and safety, skill levels have been assigned to each
group trip. See “Explanation of Skill Level” for description of each level.

20th BLACKBURN CHALLENGE: A 20+ mile open water circumnavigation of Cape Ann.
Participants may row or paddle small boats. Water conditions can vary dramatically. Occasionally
the water can be very rough with strong winds and high waves. Participants should have solid
paddling skills and experience in difficult conditions and the ability to be fully independent in open
water. The deadline for entries is 7/8/06. Registration in person required, 6:00 am. Entry fee. For

novice to racer. Non-motorized vessels including canoes, kayaks, and rowboats may participate in
the race piloted by people of all ages. (Participants 16 years and younger must be accompanied by

BILLINGTON SEA KAYAK
Explanation of Skill Levels
Level One
No previous experience is necessary.
Level Two
Paddler should feel comfortable paddling 6 miles in a day, performing a wet exit, an assisted deep water
rescue, maintaining a heading for short distances without the use of a rudder, and turning a kayak using
forward and reverse sweep strokes.
Level Three
Paddler should be able to perform all skills designated as level two. In addition, he or she should be
comfortable paddling 10 miles a day and have the skills and stamina to paddle in 5-10 knot winds and 23 foot waves.
Level Four
Paddler should be able to perform all skills designated as level two and level three. In addition, he or
she should be prepared to paddle 15 miles a day and have the skills and stamina to paddle in 20 knot
winds.
Level Five
A level five paddler is one with advanced skills who has extensive experience in challenging conditions.
A level five paddler should be able to paddle 30 miles a day and paddle in 25 knot winds with 6-8 foot
seas. The paddler should be able to launch and land through surf and be familiar with the Eskimo roll or
a reliable self-rescue technique that will serve in rough conditions.
