Weavers Guild of Greater Kansas City www.kcweaversguild.org From the President This beginning of spring has been an exciting time of planning for guild members. Barrie Mason, our new workshop coordinator, is planning an overnight excursion to Des Moines to see the exhibit Fiber: Sculpture 1960-present in June. Barrie has worked hard to get a lot packed into our trip and is coordinating with the Des Moines guild to involve them also. Their guild is nowhere near as large as ours and they are thrilled that we are involving them. We have a reputation of talent and hospitality that YOU are a part of and I can't wait to share our great guild with them. Kudos to Barrie for dreaming up this unique opportunity! During the March Surface Design meeting we had visitors from the Nelson-Atkins Museum library. We will be part of a test group for the Nelson bridging community, creativity, and current art practices with their vast research resources. Not only is it exciting to be working with the Nelson but there is potential for further involvement. Thanks to Karen Neal for stepping up to be our "Care Connection". We needed someone to send an occasional card and Karen gladly stepped forward. When we pitch in together, it makes all of us better and what a great group we are! Don't forget that our April meeting will be our annual trip to the KC Art Institute, it's one of my favorite guild activities and we always get such interesting programs. We will meet at 10:00am, April 9th, in parking lot of The Warehouse, located at 4218 Walnut St., KCMO. Weave On! Becky Stevens President Webmaster Kansas City Weavers Guild Weston Silk Museum In July, the members of the Guild will have a chance to visit the Weston Silk Museum. Weaving Tips Our weaving tip this month is from Jacqueline Jacobson. I keep pre-measured warp guide strings wound around a cardboard holder which hangs on the wall. The strings are measured out in lengths. The measurements I use are often 2 yards, 5 yards, etc. Each string is labeled by length with a tag from my label maker. They are made from bright 3/2 cotton so they are easy to see and won't stretch. This saves time getting my warp onto the loom. I keep track of how much I have woven by using adding machine tape. I cut off 3 or 4 inches more than I need. For example, if I am weaving yardage, I use 40 inches. I mark out a yard on the tape. I pin this with two T pins on the left edge of my weaving near the breast beam. When I am ready to advance the warp, I move the pins to the fell line and advance. The tape does not wind up in the woven fabric. Every time I get to the one yard marker, I make a note,1 yd, 2 yd, etc. That way I always know how much I have woven and how much I have left to go. If I am weaving dish towels or something, I can plan out on the tape where a stripe would begin and end, etc. I reuse this for each towel so they all match. We will be learning damask and brocade with Carla Tilghman. Our first day will be damask, both loomcontrolled and pick-up. These would include flat damask as well as textured effects like pleats. Day two will focus on brocade/supplemental weft. We can look at techniques from the gorgeous Renaissance brocades to the huipiles of Guatemala. The same warp and threading can be used for both... it’s all in the tie-up. This workshop will require an 8 shaft loom. Don’t despair, think of borrowing a loom OR you can also take the class and share a loom with a friend. Don’t let a loom stand in your way of learning these fascinating and historically significant weaving forms. Cost for this two-day workshop will be $75 which includes supplied warp.
