HOW A NEW LEAGUE IS BRINGING PRO BASEBALL BACK TO THE BEACH
Brad Michals | Director of Baseball Operations
Brad was the Director of Baseball and Player Development for the Worcester
Tornadoes (2005–2012) making the playoffs all 7 years and winning the league
champioship in 2005. Brad has close ties with many major league teams including
the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, and Toronto Blue Jays. He is constantly
on the lookout for prospective baseball talent and is well noted for his player assessment and evaluation skills. Brad brings over 25 years of business experience
- as the president of Michals Insurance Agency, Inc. (offices in Boston and Portland), he works closely with individuals and businesses to provide competitive
insurance programs, financial planning, and financial services products. Brad is a
graduate of the University of Maine, Orono with a degree in Public Management.
Alex Markakis | General Manager
Alex is a Massachusetts native and attended St. John’s Prep in Danvers, MA. He
was a four-year standout for Saint Joseph’s College of Maine. Primarily a third
baseman, he also logged time in the outfield and as a designated hitter while
helping St. Joe’s claim a GNAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in each of his four seasons on the diamond. He graduated in May of 2014
with a Business major. Cousins with MLB veteran outfielder Nick Markakis, who
played nine years for the Baltimore Orioles and signed a four-year deal with the
Atlanta Braves during the 2014 offseason. He is now giving back to his Alma Mater serving as an assistant coach of the Saint Joseph’s College baseball team.
Alex also recently became a liaison to an Area Scout for the New York Yankees.
Professional baseball in Old Orchard Beach has had
its share of twists and turns over the last 30 years,
but a new American-Canadian league and a pair of
Maine collegiate alumni are ready to change that.

The first time my Dad brought me to the Ball Park, my
most vivid memory was how big the place seemed. Walking
through the gate that night, the concrete grandstand looked
positively enormous to my 10 year old eyes. Growing up in New
Hampshire, this was the closest thing to the big leagues around
- I might as well have been walking into Fenway Park.
Fast forward almost thirty years, and I’m not only stepping into the Ball Park again, but I’m hopping down onto the
field from the stands - something 10 year old me would’ve been
geeking out over. And I realize something - the place is still big.
When the Old Orchard Beach Surge take the field for
the first time on June 2nd, they won’t just be filling out a lineup card, they’ll be writing a new chapter in history. The story of
baseball in this seaside town has never been easy to classify, but
it hasn’t been a boring read either. From the arrival of the Maine
Guides in 1984 (relocating from Charleston) to their departure in
1989 (to Scranton) to the Ball Park suffering years of neglect to
everyday citizens bringing the park back to life to college players
beginning their careers with the Raging Tide - it’s a story full of
drama, tragedy, love, and waiting. Lots of waiting.
That’s all over now - because Old Orchard Beach... this
is your team.
In late February, the newest independent professional
baseball league in North America announced the Surge as their
newest team - bringing the community full circle and putting
them back on the map where pro baseball is concerned. The
East Coast Baseball League (ECBL) is an established Canadian-based organization with 6 teams - 3 teams in the US, 2 in
Canada, and one traveling road team. The equivalent of Class-A
minor league baseball, the ECBL means that Old Orchard Beach
will have professional baseball after a layoff of 26 years.
At the heart of the new team is GM Alex Markakis and
Director of Baseball Operations Brad Michals. Both are graduates of Maine universities (see their bios on the opposite page).
They have a passion for baseball and are dedicated to fielding a
competitive team while also providing a fun, family atmosphere.
Every seat for games all season will be $5 each with children 7
and under getting in free. Another advantage to heading out to
ballgame in OOB? Two words seldom heard in connection to
professional sports: free parking.
Through the years, the Ball Park has remained in OOB,
patiently waiting - and now, it can finally be said... professional
