I cannot be more proud of the boys. We were playing against an undefeated team who had two of the best Under 12 players that I have ever seen. To come that close was unreal, with the hardest part being we should have won the game, needing only five runs from the last over with four wickets in hand. Batting last in finals is always difficult and to their credit, Marcus who bowled the last over was fantastic. All year there were three key messages that the team followed 1. Bowl full at off stump, 2. Be aggressive when batting and 3. Field well. I thought we executed 1 and 3 perfectly, we could have been a bit more aggressive with the bat, particularly in the last few overs but their bowling was very good which made it difficult. The tale of the game, was we lost the toss and they elected to bat. Our bowling and fielding was magnificent, all of the boys were switched on and bowled and fielded as well as they have all year. Keeping Kensington to their lowest score all year was a great effort. I thought everyone bowled well and lifted their performance when required. We started slowly with the bat, but the plan was to keep wickets in hand for the later overs. At the 20 over mark we were in a good position, but there good bowlers came back on and restricted us. In the end we only need five runs off the last over, but lost 3 wickets for 3 runs. That’s cricket. It was a great grand final and I would like to thank all of the people that turned up to watch and support the team. Keilor supporters outnumbered Kensington significantly which shows what a great supportive and family club that we have. Participation was a big factor for our team this year, the key being to make sure all of the players improved and will continue to play cricket in the future. I can sit back and proudly say that everyone improved significantly during the year and will be extremely good cricketers for Keilor and perhaps even for district cricket teams and beyond. I would like to thank many people for helping this year, Mick and Louie for scoring, Andrew and Albert for helping at different times and Nigel for assisting with motivation in the finals. A special thank you to our Team Manager BJ who did a great job. Also a big thank you to all of the parents who were there every week living each ball bowled or batted. Thanks for a great year, it’s a shame we didn’t bring home a premiership, but our boys now have good experience at playing in finals and there is always next year.
