The Kendall Community Centre is a community initiative, run by the community for the community. There are many ways that you can become involved whilst doing something you are passionate about. Whether it’s a few hours in the community garden, serving up some hospitality, selling
creative wares at the market or providing great customer service in the centre . We welcome you
to come on in and give it a go. For those who are more passionate about writing and connecting the
community through story telling and current events please consider The Kendall Chronicle. The
Kendall Chronicle is currently going through some facelifts and setting up links to an online Facebook site entitled ‘Kendall Community Centre’. We are asking for interesting articles but also feedback on what you would like to see more of in this newsletter. Please go to our Facebook page and
press ‘like’ and inbox the editors with suggestions and ideas for future articles. If you are not on

Kendall Music Exchange

Wonderful music lifted the heart and soul of
quite a large audience on Friday 6th March. All
the walk up artists as well as the main guest
performers “TWO GOATS AND A FISH” made
it a really special night of music again.
In April, we will have a slight change of date:
Because the first Friday in April turns out to be
GOOD FRIDAY, we are holding the music exchange night on Friday 10th April instead. So please mark your calendar for that
one. Guest artists on the 10th April will be “JIM
AND SUE” from Bonny Hills. It will be fantastic
to hear Jim and Sue again.
Jim and Sue have been performing their heartfelt original songs, and carefully selected covers,
together for eight years now. Their style could
be described as acoustic folk, sometimes with a
dash of soft rock, sometimes with a hint of
country, blended with their beautiful vocal harmonies. Jim plays the acoustic guitar and Sue
plays the djembe (goblet shaped hand drum)
and percussion to accompany their lovely voices.
Then on Friday 1st May, the main guest
artists will be Kendall’s very own home made

Wonderful band “Up in Annie’s Room” will
have you up and dancing with their exciting
mix of jazz,
tango, Romany swing and
klezmer. They’re first class musos, the band are
a mix of locals and a few from Sydney. A range
of instruments from sax, clarinet, guitar, double
bass, accordion, violin and mandolin.
Kendall Community Centre will be presenting
the band as its second of four events, supported
by a Country Arts Support Program grant,.
The event is on the
Saturday 16 May from 7.30pm.
Yummy hot soup and bread rolls is included in
the ticket price of just $25. Bring your own nibbles and drinks and make up a table for a fun
night out in Kendall. Bookings are essential…

talented musicians Tommy Kennedy and Tahlia
Rose from Kundabung to accompany them on
1st May. At only 15 and 13 these young two
have just taken first place trophies winning a
sound recording award just recently!
Local musicians are always encouraged to
bring their instrument along and share a couple
of songs. And, of course you are most welcome
to just come and listen to some beautiful music
at the Kendall Community Hall.

Kendall Kettles Craft Group is a friendly group
of crafters who meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday
of each month in the Kendall Club from 9.00am
till around1pm. Cost for each meeting is $2.00.
Our members work on their own projects including knitting, crocheting, embroidery, patchwork, card making and many other crafts. Occasionally lessons for those interested are held
where we learn something new. Currently we
are making sensory mats for the elderly in
Lakeside Nursing Home. New members are
welcome to join us either on a casual basis or a
regular attendant.
Kendall Kettles also host the Kendall Village
Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea and this
year it will be held on Monday 25th May commencing at 10am. A lovely morning tea will be
provided as well as a display of our member’s
work and community projects that we support.
Entry is a gold coin donation and our craft stall
and raffle will help us raise some more funds.
All money raised on the morning will be sent to
the Cancer Council. The Bells of Haven will be
providing the entertainment and all are most

Neighbourhood Update

Eight years ago, the Kendall Solar Neighbourhood scheme installed solar panels on 90 houses. Householders received 60 cents kilowatt/
hour tariff for the solar electricity they fed into
the grid. This generous tariff runs out late 2016.
People who joined after the cut-off date only
received a paltry amount, between 6 and 12
cents a kw/h.
A high Renewable Energy Target encourages
investment, jobs, makes energy cheaper, and
lowers greenhouse gas emissions. Sadly, our
present government is addicted to fossil fuel
and resists raising the target.
The solar industry is expanding rapidly. It is
currently generating $2 trillion annually worldwide and may displace fossil fuels within the
next 15 years.

Grid parity means that the cost of renewable
energy is equal to (or less than) the cost of energy from the electricity grid (whose sources are
coal, oil, gas). When a source of energy reaches
grid parity, it becomes a viable contender as an
energy provider.
Germany reached grid parity in 2012 for its
rooftop-generated solar energy.
If electricity prices become too high, and the
feed-in tariff for our solar contribution is too
low, then people will opt out by choosing a
stand-alone system.
Here’s how it works:
In the past, the only way to store solar energy
was with expensive, heavy, lead-acid batteries.
These have been replaced by compact, lowmaintenance, lithium-ion batteries.
Through improved battery technology and
mass production, lithium-ion batteries will soon
be affordable to the average household.
Families and businesses with roof top solar
panels can invest in storage batteries which allows them to disconnect from the grid. After
initial costs, their electricity will be virtually
free. Each household becomes a type of microgrid.
There are other options. Some communities
have got together, shared the cost of batteries,
and formed a community microgrid.
In late 2016 when high feed-in tariffs end, the
electricity utilities and government will have to
decide on a new feed-in tariff rate for those who
contribute solar electricity to the grid.
If they pay too little for our solar electricity,
many people will opt for a stand-alone system.
The utilities will lose customers. To maintain
their profits, utilities would have to charge their
existing customers more. High electricity bills
would encourage remaining customers to purchase a solar stand-alone system, and the
downward spiral would accelerate.
Regardless of what governments and utilities
do, the renewable energy industry is surging
ahead. Technology and costs are changing in
our favour. Meanwhile, we will keep the community informed of options.

Only this week, The ‘Big 4’ banks have refinanced Whitehaven Coal, backing a massive
controversial expansion into an endangered
Woodland ecosystem. As major emitters of
greenhouse gases, the fossil fuel industries contribute substantially to human-generated climate change.
How refreshing, then, to be able to bank with
an organisation that does not invest in fossil
fuels!
Recently, my partner and I joined the
‘divestment’ movement – we closed our respective accounts with members of the ‘Big 4’, and
placed our savings with the Bendigo Bank.
The divestment movement is having a huge
impact overseas on banks which finance the
fossil fuel industry, and is gathering momentum in Australia. (You may have heard of the
powerful old Rockefeller family in the USA recently withdrawing all investments in the fossil
fuel industry.)
The move for us was easy – the bank even
manages the switch for you. And there are
many banks to choose from: just go to
www.marketforces.org.au/banks/compare to
find the one that best suits your needs.
It can be frustrating and disheartening hearing
about the inevitability of climate change. As
citizens, we feel powerless in the face of enormous vested interests.
The Bendigo Bank agency is a great asset to the
Kendall community. It allows us to bank locally
and employs local people. It works hand-in-glove
with the community centre: the more people use
the facility, the more the CTC benefits financially.
But the more often ordinary people vote with
their feet, the stronger is the message to our
politicians and banks: for the sake of the planet
and our children’s futures, stop financing the
fossil fuel industries and start supporting renewable energy.
It also specialises in financing small businesses,
community projects, student scholarships, and
supports organisations such as the Royal Children’s Hospital, RSPCA, Oxfam , emergency ser-

Ikew Update Report

Firstly we would like to sincerely thank the
Kendall Community Op-Shop for the grant to
enable us to have a more sophisticated alarm
system installed. Port Macquarie Hastings
Council has approved a further two year commitment for our continued operation of the
information centre and associated activities,
and negotiations are ongoing for maybe a further extension beyond two years. Council is
most impressed and very happy with the success of the centre and positive on the role the
centre is playing in attracting visitors to the
Camden Haven and surrounding communities.
We have been continuing work renovating the
amenities at the Information Centre. The roof
has been renewed and we have now moved
onto replacing partitions, painting and updating the Ladies toilet internally. A most rewarding comment was made last week when a
lady traveller called into the Information Centre informing us “that she would not stop at
any other Ladies toilet between Sydney and
Kew for cleanliness reasons” many thanks to
our dedicated Volunteers. Our next step is to
start on the Men’s toilets. The enjoyable part is
that the travelers who are calling into the information centre enjoy what we have and are
satisfied with the local knowledge of our volunteers. Great plans are ahead for the centre
and Kew, more details on that later.
Our next outing with the social club is in May

Kendall. The Wine Tastings were so enjoyable
many of the iKew volunteers decided to return. Plans are underway for a Soup and Slice
Lunch in June which should suit those who do
not drive of a night.
We now have over 40 Volunteers rostered
over the month. With Easter approaching we
are gearing up for the “Driver Reviver” influx
to start with the School Holidays and Easter
Holidays almost upon us. We would like to
thank the many Volunteers who have given
their time for this most important service to
road travellers.

Sending letters into the Editor is
currently under scrutiny .
We request public opinion, through channels
suggested on page 1, as to appropriate guidelines
for how ‘Letters-to-the-editor’ are used, or potentially removed from the chronicle entirely.
A recent article which asserted a position regarding the ‘Historic Wharf access’ may have unintentionally had concerning repercussions to the
surrounding landowners who were associated in
this debate. The landowners Megan and Basil reported that an act of trespassing and theft on the
property may have been related to this issue being publicised. Both parties involved in the debate have attempted to discuss this matter
through a third party i.e. ’Letters-to-the-Editor’.
It may be more productive and less publicly confrontational in the future for members of the
community to consider more direct forms of
communication regarding sensitive issues.
Megan and Basil have indicated shortly before
this went to print that they “have never stopped
access from the ‘town green’ to the ‘historic
wharf’ with many people using this access regularly.
The change to land surrounding the Historic
Wharf has concerned some and been of little interest to others. Through mutual respect and
open communication it is hoped that this issue
will resolve itself over time. The Kendall Chronicle will provide further clarity on how the Historic Wharf is accessed in the next issue.
We invite the community’s thoughts on appropriate guidelines in printing sensitive forms of
communication. If anyone has experience in
this area please make contact. Alternatively removing ‘letters-to-the-editor’ may be the best
option.

The number of entries for
fruit/veges and flowers into the Kendall Show
was not as many as previous years possibly as a
result of the poor weather conditions. Doug

Last Working Bee…
Sue, John, Richard,
Christine and Jim attended the working bee to
weed the gardens around the hall. Lorraine and
Berry provided refreshments for the workers.
The horticultural speakers day
will be on 25th July and speakers will
cover garden design, garden of the year, weeds
and grasses, and fungi. Bookings will be essential. Entry price is expected to be $15 and $12 for
lunch.

Volunteers are sought for manning the
Driver Reviver over Easter.
Lemon Scented Tree Tea Oil. She passed
around some sprigs and suggested rubbing
the leaves vigorously to generate heat and to
get the scent of the oil from the leaves.
Tienke and her husband Jeff hand planted
around 20000 trees. Pruning was done by
hand. Original sales was in bulk, but eventually began selling in smaller quantities and
continue to value add. The trees grow to
about 2.5 m and are then harvested down to
60cm. The leaf is collected into a barrel that
holds 700kg. 100kg of leaf is needed to produce 1 litre of oil. The harvested leaf is then
steam distilled for 2 hours generating about
36 litres of oil. Total produced each year is
around 130 t0 160 litres of essential oil. The
generated mulch is put back into the plantation. The trees continue to be productive after
17 years of harvesting.

Minutes from the Quarterly Community Networking Report
Held March 2015 Minutes Recorded by Elizabeth Watson
Alan Hudson opened the meeting and commented on the recent grant to the Kendall Tennis Club. Everyone
agreed that they were happy to hear some progress at last.
LANDCARE- Barry Barr reported completion of: river bank near the Kendall S & C club, opposite boat
launching ramp. Lorne Rural Fire Service has offered to help if a suitable date can be negotiated. Sullivan
Road work is still continuing. One Landcare member has taken on the responsibility for improving the entrance to Kendall near the bridge and has made a big difference to this area.
KENDALL COMMUNITY BOATSHED- Barry Barr reported that improvements at the boatshed had been
done using op shop 2014 grant. Currently there are 28 financial members – Membership cost $10.00 pa. Open
day last year was very successful. Public Liability Insurance costs continue to be an ongoing issue and are
looking at maybe associating with other organisations and sharing their public liability cover. There is no
cover for people while on the water. The club is also exploring options to reduce the electricity costs. Girl
Guides and Sea Scouts are now using the facilities.
IKEW CENTRE- Barry Barr reported that the centre is working very well with the Driver Reviver well used
during holiday periods. Volunteers monitor visitor numbers at different times to gauge when to open in the
future. Use is increasing as word gets out that the centre is open. The Flagpole is currently being restored by
the Kendall Men’s Shed.
KENDALL KETTLES-Elizabeth Watson advised the group has 2 new members and now regularly had 28-29
members attend. Currently planning Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea at the club on Monday 25 th commencing at 10am. The Bells of Haven will be the entertainment. All welcome. The group are also making fiddle quilts for dementia patients in the local nursing homes.
CWA – Sue Carter reported CWA will be having lamingtons for sale at the next State Election on 28 th March.
Their International Day is being held on 31st March at the Kendall Club. The country for study this year is
Italy and Kendall Public School students have been compiling projects for display at the luncheon. They will
be judged on the day with students attending for part of the morning.
KENDALL GARDEN CLUB- John Carter reported a successful Christmas Party held at Cattai Wetlands and
recommends a visit to the wetlands. Open Fri, Sat, Sun and Monday 8am-3pm. There will be another Horticultural Speakers Day to be held on Saturday 25th July in the Kendall Community Centre. Cost $15.00 includes morning tea. A hot lunch provided by retired Meeting Place staff will be available for $15.00 for those
who want to partake. Booking for the day can be made to John Carter or Richard Cullen or at the Community
Centre. Limited number of seats available.
LORNE RFS – John Carter said that it has been a reasonably quiet summer with not many call outs thankfully due to the rain. Permits to light fires are not required at the moment but please advise your neighbours
and phone Wauchope Control Centre on 6588 9000 if you are planning to burn off.
KENDALL HERITAGE SOCIETY - Betty Boyd reported that the society were unsuccessful in their application for a
grant for various reasons to restore the Henry Kendall wall mural. They are disappointed as they have an appropriately
qualified artist lined up. They are currently looking at other avenues of funding.
Heritage week this year runs from April 10th till May 2nd. Kendall Public School students will be asked to
submit poems to be judged by CWA members. The Heritage Society will be providing guided tours around
The Heron’s Creek Cemetery on Saturday 2nd May and a working bee will be held on Saturday 21st March to
help clean up the graves. If you have a family member buried in this graveyard could you please contact Betty Boyd, Ron Haswell or Martin Parish so permission can be given to clean up around the gravestones? Martin Parish also advised that Stage 2 of the Heritage Trail was in planning stages and they are looking at funding options.
STEERING COMMITTEE FOR THE WORLD WAR 1 MEMORIAL RESTORATION at IKew – The gardens around the memorial have been cleared and red gravel or crushed bricks will be laid . A flag has been
provided by David Gillespie. A plan of action is required to ensure completion before Anzac Day.
The flagpole is being restored by the Kendall Men’s Shed members.
KENDALL COMMUNITY PRE-SCHOOL – Susan Crowie reported that the revamp of their sandpit
(funded from an op shop grant) is now complete. Students will be taking part in the March and service on
Anzac Day. The pre-school provided sponsorship for the creative arts section of the Camden Haven Show.
The enrolment has increased from 20 to 25 students from the start of this year and the centre caters for 35year olds. The fundraising ideas for 2015 include a Mother’s Day raffle and barefoot bowling event at the
Kendall Club, Christmas in July Trivia Night at the club and in October they will be holding their Spring Fair.

2015 SHOW, 21st/22nd February – Bill Boyd mentioned most activities were cancelled due to bad
weather but the racing pigs where very popular as were the pavilion displays. A mini show to be
held on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th March. Mention was also made of the Comboyne Show, held
the following weekend was a success with increased exhibits.
KENDALL S & C CLUB – Allan Hudson reported that at the end of January 2015 the club was trading better than last year. The Wine Club and the Restaurant continues to be successful. A survey of
members was completed recently. Suggestions and ideas are being implemented with the call for
more live entertainment. More renovation at the club to be completed by the end of June.

The Service will commence at 10am Sharp, at the Cenotaph in the Kendall War Memorial Park,

This year being the Centenary of ANZAC’s landing at Gallipoli the sub-Branch will be holding a
Commemorative Lunch at the Kendall Services and Citizens Club.
We are offering members of the Kendall Community the opportunity to join us at the Luncheon. There
is alternate served mains, desert, tea and coffee with included beverages, soft drinks, beer and house
wine only available during the lunch service.
