April 30th was an amazing day for our students as they were able to wear jeans to school if they
purchased a Jeans Day button. King Traditional raised $ 1895 for BC Children’s Hospital. Way to go! A
big thank you goes to Mrs. MacKenzie for organizing this important fundraiser for our school.

Volunteering
As a school of choice, we know that every parent in our school made a conscious decision to attend our
school. There are many reasons why parents choose King Traditional, but the reasons can be summed
up with the understanding that KTES has the reputation of being a great school. One of the main
contributing factors to our reputation is the enormous support and involvement of parents at King over
the years. We need this support and involvement to continue if we want to continue to achieve great
things at King Traditional. Imagine what great things could be achieved if the parents of each of our 385
students volunteered regularly. Wow! If you haven’t helped out at the school for any of our events this
year, we will be asking you to step up and help with yearend events like the Fun Fair, Sports Day, Track
and Field, Hot Lunch, and more. If you child’s teacher wouldn’t recognize you if you dropped by, now is
the time to get involved at school.

Congratulations to our April Students of the Month
At the beginning of each month, KTES holds a Student of the Month assembly to recognize students from our Grade 1 to
5 classes who show outstanding social responsibility. We also honour one primary and one intermediate student who
demonstrate outstanding citizenship while learning with Mr. Lainchbury. Specific virtues are taught in our classrooms and
reinforced at assemblies and throughout the school and grounds.

As well as acknowledging our SOM students monthly, students also have the opportunity to receive citizenship awards
that are placed on the “Knight” bulletin board for all to see. At the end of each month, these awards are placed into a
draw. Student names are drawn and these students get to choose a prize from the prize box.

Allergy Alert
A new type of candy, called “Sour Blast” is showing up at some schools. It’s a squirt gun so children
are not only consuming it, but spraying it on others. The main concern is the contents, which seem to contain
every major allergen possible. Contents listed include: tartrazine, various nuts, milk, eggs, fish, soya. These
could cause reactions if some children with related allergies come into contact with the product. Please do not
send this product to school with your child. Thank you for helping keep all of our students safe.
The Big Bad Musical
Thank you to everyone who was able to come out and see our Spring Production this year. I think you’ll agree that
it was absolutely wonderful. Thank you to all of the staff and parents who worked together to make it a great
success. Ticket sales raised $ 2403. This almost covers our Spring Production costs of approximately $2616.
Thank you for supporting our arts programming at KTES.
Grade 4 Unofficial FSA 2015 Results
Grade 4 students completed the Ministry of Education Foundational Skills Assessment in February. Parents should have received
their child’s results after spring break. We received student results in an unofficial format at the end of March. The unofficial results
for our school are indicated as follows in the subjects of Reading, Writing and Numeracy.
Students meeting or exceeding expectations in Reading 94%
Students meeting or exceeding expectations in Writing 97%
Students meeting or exceeding expectations in Numeracy 94%
Please note that we had one student absent for the FSA assessments so that student’s marks count as “not yet meeting”.

Heart to Heart-Haiti
Once again this year, Heart to Heart-Haiti will be collecting new or gently used school supplies to send to a school in Haiti. This
school supply collection program is organized by former Abbotsford School District principals. Helping with supplies is an easy way
for your child to help students in a less fortunate country have the supplies they need to learn. Collection boxes will be placed in the
foyer or MPR for the last two weeks of June.
If you would like to collect supplies here are the needed materials:

Ready, Set, Learn!
Ready, Set, Learn for 3 year olds will be held May 11th from 4-5pm.
Ready, Set, Learn for students who will be entering Kindergarten at King Traditional in September 2015 will be held in the gym on
May 4 from 4-5pm. Our Kindergarten teachers will be contacting you to invite you to this special opportunity.
All children in attendance will receive a bag of materials to assist them with their learning.
Our Kindergarten teacher is looking forward to meeting with parents and children to talk about what we can do as a team to help
prepare children for Kindergarten.

Eliminating Bullying Behaviours (courtesy of the ATMS newsletter)
Here are some TIPS for parents and students
1. Take back the POWER
Bullies are “allowed” to continue their behaviour because the victim feels powerless. So take back the power by telling an adult
(parent, friend, teacher, or administrator) who will hold the bully accountable. "Bullying is about power. Once the balance of power
has been shifted and one party feels threatened, it goes beyond harmless teasing," says Rowe-Cosentino (Bullying Prevention Social
Worker).
2. SUPPORT each other
If your friend is being bullied, have their “back.” All individuals deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. Bullying, teasing, or
harassing another individual is NEVER okay. So we need to teach students to think before they speak or act. A student needs to say to
their peers, “Hey, that’s not cool.”
3. MONITOR online “stuff”
Parents can help by monitoring their child’s online stuff – check their phone, IPod for apps and how they are being used. Ask your
child, “Hey, what is this app for?” When in doubt, Google the app and you will find online reviews, and details. From an educator’s
point of view, the following apps are problems – KIK, ASK, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, and YikYak.
Summer School 2015
In May, we will be submitting the names of students we recommended for summer school to the district. Classroom teachers will be
sending home registration papers for you to sign. If your child is not able to attend the entire summer school program, please do not
register as it takes a spot away from students who will be there every day.

If your teacher has not sent home a summer school registration form by May 7 , and you feel your child requires the extra support
of summer school, please talk with your child's teacher. Please be aware that summer school is reserved for the students with the
greatest learning needs in the district.
Warm Weather Foot Wear
With warmer weather upon us many children will be wearing lighter clothing as well as thoughts of lighter footwear like flip-flops or
open toed sandals. Although, it is nice to wear these cooler footwear they do pose problems for children in regards to safety.
Younger children can trip easily when running about the school playground area. As well, open toed footwear can also lead to toes
being injured due to hitting objects that may be sticking out. With this in mind we ask that students not wear flip-flops or open toed
footwear. Please stick with runners outside so children can run and play safety. Thank-you for your support.

Emergency Preparedness week is ideal time to talk with your family about the broader importance of emergency preparedness at
home and within the community. One simple step is to prepare an emergency kit with your family with information found at get

Once again, this year our main school goal is centered on reading comprehension.
According to the BC Performance Standards for Reading:
By March/April in Grade Four "fully meeting expectations" in Reading Comprehension means the student “is able to independently
read, understand, and respond to simple and direct stories, novels, and poems. Provides support when prompted. Work is generally
accurate and complete."
The student:
-produces work that is accurate, complete; provides some detail and support
-accurately describes main characters in some details
-retells main event in the correct sequence
-makes some logical inferences about characters’ feelings
Students in Grade 4 use the following strategies:
Before
• Based on the cover, title, illustration(s), and/or author, what do you predict this novel is about?
• What questions do you have about this story/picture/video/topic?
• What connections can you make to something you already know about this book or subject?
• Preview the book. How is it organized? Are there any features that might help you understand
the content?
During
• What strategies can you use to figure out words you don’t know?
• If the book doesn’t make sense, what strategies can you use to check on the meaning?
• Which part is most challenging? Read it for me and we’ll talk about some of the harder parts.
After
• How did the headings, diagrams, and illustrations help you make sense of the information?
• What strategies would you use to summarize what you just viewed?
• Which sections or features help you access information quickly?
Fun Fair
We need your help!
Please help us in getting these items:
• Items for our Silent Auction-visit the stores and restaurants that you visit frequently and ask for donations. We have a letter
at the office that you can hand out.
• Stuffed Animals-these can be new or used. This is a great way to encourage your child to be generous and donate their used
stuffies.
• Candy and prizes-we need small candies like you would get at Halloween and small prizes. Any help you can give with this is
much appreciated.
We will also need parents to sign up to run one of the games on the day of the Fun Fair. Shifts are generally 45 minutes. We can’t do
it without you!

Incident: Immigration Fee Fraud
Abbotsford – April 21, 2015
In the early afternoon of April 20, 2015, an Abbotsford man received a call purportedly from Citizenship and
Immigration Canada. The caller advised that the man was required to pay $4280 within seven hours or he would
face deportation. He was instructed to purchase pre-loaded credit cards and await a call back. The conversation
between the victim and the caller took place in both English and Punjabi.
The victim checked the caller’s number and it did appear to be associated with Citizenship and Immigration
Canada. This added legitimacy in his mind and he went to purchase some of the pre-loaded credit cards at a local
business. After sharing the credit card information with the caller at call back, a demand for the balance was
made. An employee of the business where the credit cards were purchased became suspicious and contacted the
Abbotsford Police Department. APD patrol officers met with the victim. Officers quickly determined that the man
had been the victim of a scam where a spoofed telephone number had been used. The incident is still under
investigation but the victim is currently out almost $2000.
The APD wants people to be aware of this scam and always to be suspicious of any contact where money is to be
immediately paid or transferred in order to stave off repercussions from authorities. Variations of this type of fraud
are plentiful.
