Internship: Programming & Communications ______ Organisational Context The Abbotsford Convent Foundation (ACF) is a not-for-profit organisation that owns and operates the Abbotsford Convent on behalf of the public. Just four kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD, its 11 historic buildings, gardens and car park are spread over 6.8 hectares in a sweeping bend in the Yarra River and are surrounded by the Collingwood Children’s Farm and Yarra Bend Park. With a focus on creativity, culture and learning, the Convent is now home to over 100 artist studios and offices for small businesses, a radio station, four eateries, an open air cinema, food and craft markets, two galleries, an extensive program of events and venues for rehearsals, performances, classes, workshops and conferences. The site brings with it a significant heritage challenges that underpin the manner in which it can develop as well as multiple, varied stakeholders with differing needs and expectations. Over the past few years the ACF has increased its cultural programming function and activity. After a successful relaunch of the popular event in 2014, Music in the Round (MitR) will return to the Abbotsford th Convent with classical musical performances programmed across the heritage site on 6 September 2015. This large event is held across several ticketed venues with additional free concerts & exhibitions throughout the day in the Convent’s beautiful outdoor spaces. The program has been designed to highlight local and national classical music performers from around Australia presented in a contemporary way. The musicians have been selected to bring together a crosssection of Australian performers including exciting emerging talents, through to artists whose reputation ranks them amongst the finest of Australia’s established performers. Organisational Relationship This position will be split between the Marketing and Communications department and the Programming department with additional support from the MitR Producer and Volunteer Coordinator. • The position reports directly to the Communications Manager for the first 6 weeks • The position reports directly to the Programming Manager for the second 6 weeks About the Role The Programming & Communications Intern will play a central role in assisting with the organisation of MitR, including marketing and event coordination. The internship is approximately 3 months with a commitment of one day per week for the duration of the internship. The ideal start date is the first week of June 2015. This is a voluntary position. Abbotsford Convent Foundation 1 Key Outcomes for Successful Applicant The successful candidate will gain practical, hands-on experience in Marketing and Communications and event planning and production experience of a large-scale event at one of Victoria’s most unique arts and cultural and learning organisations. This is a rare opportunity to work closely with two departments, gaining valuable and practical experience in the arts. This position is ideally suited for an Arts Management or Marketing and Communications student, or someone who is considering a future in the arts.
