GENERAL NEWS & INFORMATION:

th
Moving?: If you are planning a summer move, please let the Registrar know by June 12 either via email at
[email protected] or by phone at 360-662-4046. If you have an unplanned move over summer please
email or call the registrar with your students name, birthdate, your new address or area that you will be moving to
and a phone number where you can be reached. Please be sure your student returns all library and text books
and pay any fines before the last day of school.

Absences: Parents/Guardians are asked to contact the attendance office to excuse absences within 48 hours.
Board policy #3122 states: "Parents/guardians have two school business days, after a student has
returned to school, to ask that a student's absence be excused. After this time, the absence will be
marked as unexcused." In addition to calling the attendance office during the school day a voice message may
be left after hours. Please state the student name, parent/guardian name, and the day(s) absent, and the reason.
If a student is going to be gone for an extended amount of time please call the attendance office or send a note
with your student at least three days before the first date of the expected absence. Please state the nature of the
absence and the date(s) absent. A form will be given to the student to inform teachers and to get homework
details.

October PSAT: This is a test which students take in the fall that helps to identify their college readiness, potential
ability in AP classes and strengths & weaknesses as they prepare to take the SAT. Who should take this test at
KSS in the fall?—nearly all Juniors (as they prepare for the SAT), most Sophomores (as they take the opportunity
th
th
to practice for the SAT AND think about college readiness & potential AP classes), and many 8 & 9 graders (all
rd
who MIGHT take an AP class at KSS in the following year). Have you hear the news that KSS is ranked 23 in
the State out of approx. 500 on the Washington Post “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” list? Check us
out at http://apps.washingtonpost.com/local/highschoolchallenge/schools/2015/list/washington-schools/klahowyasilverdale-wa/ . Students who take the PSAT receive specific feedback concerning their potential in various
Advanced Placement classes. Sign your student up during Flight Path in August!
ATHLETICS & ACTIVITIES:

Summer Sports: Attention all 8th-11th graders-- in order to participate in summer sports programs with Klahowya,
you must be cleared. All sports paperwork needs to be updated for summer. Once completed, you'll be cleared
for next year as well. Visit the sports page of the website to see the required documents for clearance.
Questions? See Mr. Winters or Mrs. Peeler at lunch.

Marching Band Fall Season 2015: Summer Band Camp begins August 17 -August 22 . We are looking for
percussion, instrumentalists, and GUARD (anyone can join guard and they don’t have to be a band student!)
th
Please get your registration in before June 12 to secure your spot in the 2015 Fall Marching Band Season.

Jazz Band: Mrs. Morgan is looking for guitar and bass players for Jazz Band next year. Please come see her if
you are interested in being a part of our jazz program.

Klahowya’s Vegetable Garden: Our students, teachers, parents, community volunteers and Seeds of Grace
th
built and planted a vegetable garden during our CK Super Saturday work day April 18 . The purpose of the
garden is to provide fresh vegetables to any student working the garden, families of Klahowya in need and to
donate to the Silverdale Food Bank. Our students are learning how to maintain and grow sustainable foods, how
they can help their community, a sense of accomplishment and what’s it’s like to be a part of something bigger
than themselves. Currently it has been the science classes and teachers working the garden, but the goal is for
any class to be part of this garden next year and the years to come. This garden wouldn’t be possible without the
generosity and help of Karole Johnson and the Seeds of Grace organization who organized and procured the
donated supplies and labor for this project. We are looking for Klahowya community members interested in being
a part of this garden project, imparting gardening skills to our students during the year and volunteering over the
summer to weed and harvest the garden. If interested in summer work, please go to my Klahowya Garden
Facebook page. I’ll be setting up a weekly summer schedule.

YOUR HEALTH:
Keeping Your Teen Drug and Alcohol Free This Summer
Summer break is right around the corner and most teens are looking forward to some rest and relaxation after a busy
school year. While our kids need some free and unstructured time to enjoy all that summer has to offer, research shows
that too much free time leads some teens to engage in risky behaviors such as experimenting with tobacco, alcohol, or
other drugs. This is particularly true for those with fewer responsibilities and less adult supervision during the summer
months.
A recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows that many teen’s first-time experimentation with substances
1
occurs in June and July.
 On an average day in June, July, more than 11,000 youths used alcohol for the first time; in other months, the
daily average ranged from about 5,000 to 8,000 new users per day
 On an average day in June or July, more than 5,000 youths smoked cigarettes for the first time; in other months,
the daily average ranged from about 3,000 to 4,000 new users per day
 On an average day in June or July, more than 4,800 youths used marijuana for the first time, whereas the daily
average ranged from about 3,000 to 4,000 in other months
What can you do to keep your teen safe and sober?
 Have frequent discussions about the harmful effects of using tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs with your child even if you don’t think they will try it.
 Set clear expectations and consequences regarding substance use
 Get to know your child’s friends and their families.
 Don’t be afraid to ask your teen the 5 W’s before they go out – WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and WHY.
 Be a good role model.
 Recognize or reward their positive choices.
 Provide your child with healthy, safe opportunities to stay busy and engaged.
Even though it may not feel like it some days, your teenager really does listen to what you have to say, especially when it
comes to the subject of substance use. In fact, research shows that 80% of children between the ages of 10-18 say that
2
their parents are the leading influence in whether or not they drink or don’t drink. Having frequent conversations about
alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use really does have an impact, so make some time to talk with your teen today.
Have a safe and healthy summer!
