6. Previous Minutes
Motion #19-2015 … Grand Knight WAGNER declared that the minutes of the
previous meeting dated February 16, 2015 be adopted as presented. Carried
7. Report of the Admission Committee and Reading of Applications
Nothing new to report.
8. Grand Knight's Report
As always, we are encouraging all Knights and parishioners (and anybody
else for that matter) to sign up for the Father J. McGivney Guild. Please
sign up people and give out blessed rosaries to those who join. If you need
more rosaries, pamphlets and other informational items, please see your
Grand Knight.
Anyone wanting to be inspired should have been at our Basketball Free
Throw on Sunday, March 8. Aside from the wonderful sportsmanship and
skill demonstrated by all the youngsters, the inspirational moment of the day
was when a completely blind boy (Matthew Furnell) participated and made
two baskets to the loud cheers of all those assembled. It was a very proud
day for him and his mother, Patty. Matthew may not be able to see, but, as
his mother states, “His determination makes up for it …. There is nothing he
will not try.” What a wonderful example and inspiration for the rest of us!
Thanks Brother Andrew Gallagher and all the volunteers who made this
such a successful event! A submission has been made to Columbia
Magazine for the Knights in Action section.
Thanks to all those who helped with the Spring Fling Ticket Sales at the
Co-op and Superstore. Some individuals had as many as five shifts. It is
always my dream that we have enough Knights volunteering that no one
should have more than one shift. Perhaps this is a conversation for another
day. Collectively we need to look for positive ways to engage our
membership.
This year, I had several people comment on having a meeting on Family
Day. While this is not the first time we have had a meeting on a holiday,
perhaps this is a consideration we need to take seriously given that we are
a family oriented organization. Let’s keep this in mind when we set our new
calendar in August of 2015.
Please promote the upcoming Dinner Theatre that Father Lawless is hosting
in partnership with St. Margaret School. Thanks Marcel for all your
groundwork on this. Please reserve April 24 on your calendar. This is one
you will not want to miss. See poster attached.
Thanks to all those who helped with the Recruitment Blitz, Pancake
Breakfasts and selling of Spring Fling Tickets, etc., etc., etc. Many hands
make for light work.
I realize that it may seem very early to be talking about our Awards Night
and Installation of Officers scheduled for Friday, June 19, but experience
tells me that the best way to guarantee a good turnout out is to encourage
members to get the date on their calendars early. This is our annual
opportunity to celebrate our Council and hopefully develop new leadership
potential.
On March 15, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI approved a decree recognizing the
heroic virtue of Fr. McGivney. The Pope's declaration significantly advanced
the process toward sainthood. The declaration allows Catholics to refer to
McGivney with the title "Venerable Servant of God". You can help with this
cause by signing people up for the Guild. Check out the Guild by clicking
on this live link: http://www.fathermcgivney.org/en/index.html
9. Chaplain's Message
Fr RICK spoke about eulogies.
Our bishop has said that it is not proper form to have eulogies at Masses
for funerals. The funeral liturgy focuses on the fact that Jesus died and rose
again. We should focus on what he has done for us, and our participation
in this death and resurrection. It should not be about a person's
achievements or legacy, but their faith, and our faith.
Eulogies were never a part of the Mass, so it is wrong to think that it is
traditional. We adopted it from the protestant churches.
While it is something good, a funeral Mass is simply not the appropriate
place for it. Fr RICK believes some people need it, and it's helpful to them,
but a better place would be at the reception.

13.4 Men's Spiritual Weekend 2016 - Br ROSSLER
Br ROSSLER was not present, so Grand Knight WAGNER spoke on
his behalf
Some of the speakers have been confirmed. A reminder that this is not
only for catholic gentlemen, but any man who wishes to attend.
13.5 Publicity - Br BONAR
There will be a pancake breakfast on Mar 29, and we will hold the
draw for spring fling at same time.
The next Knights of Columbus Mass at St. Joseph's will be on Apr 11.
The next council meeting will be Apr 20.
The dinner theatre hosted by our council will be on Apr 24. Posters will
be distributed, and announcements have been sent to the Moose Jaw
Express, Times Herald, and Shaw Cable.
13.6 Church & Parish Director - Br BONAR
The last parish meeting was not well attended, but there was discussion
about setting up a fundraising meeting. This will not happen until after
the Easter season.
13.7 Admissions Chairman - Br ELLIS
Br ELLIS was not present.
13.8 Membership Director - Br GAGNON
We had our blitz, though it was not very successful. We need to talk to
people more. Don't bug them, but get the conversation started. Plant
the seed. Perhaps we have been too timid. Just one quick mention to
every man in our parish would help.
13.9 Moose Jaw Knights - Br GAGNON
They will be discussing the family picnic that is put on by both councils
at their next meeting. That meeting will likely be in April.
13.10 Community Director - Br HARRISON
Br HARRISON was not present.
13.11 Culture of Life Director - Br L'HEUREUX
A new list of calendar items was distributed, highlighting various pro-life
related events and activities.
There was also discussion regarding a resolution for state concerning
Parental Consent, but that is highlighted later in these minutes.
13.12 Basketball Free Throw - Br GALLAGHER
Br GALLAGHER expressed his thanks all knights, including those from
council 9760, with special thanks to Marcel, and Dale.
It was a great event, with more students participating this year than last
year.
13.13 Retention Committee - Br TONI
There was a meeting just before our council meeting, with some tough
decisions being made.
There are currently 20 knights still un-paid. One of them is a senior
knight who is not in good health. His dues will be paid for by the
council, and he will be sent a card.
The committee members believe they can get most of the other
members to pay.
13.14 Program Director - Br TONI
Nothing new to report.
13.14 Dinner Theatre - Br GAGNON
The plays that the school puts on are normally only done once. He
thought it would be a good idea to fundraise and get more use out of
them.
We will sell 150 to 160 seats max. Br GAGNON has already had lots
of help from some of our knights (Craig with his art, and Al with his
carpentry)
Tickets are on sale, with 30 being sold already. They will be sold at all
masses, and are also available at the rectory and Church of our Lady.
14. Old Business
14.1 Sponsorship of Knight to attend SPLA Convention (Apr 24-25)
A reminder that any brothers wishing to attend will be provided funds
previously set aside.
14.2 Sponsorship of bus to transport students to March for Life (May 7)
Travel to and from the march site will be provided to those who want it.
14.3 Letter to MPs (Re: Assisted Suicide issue)
This issue still needs our attention and our voice, so please send
letters.
14.4 Support for Heartland Hospice Moose Jaw
Grand Knight WAGNER re-iterated the state of this organization, and
will leave this item on old business to keep it fresh in our minds.
Perhaps in the future we help the organization out, whether it be
monetarily or with our time.
He and Br TONI mentioned their recent meetings, issues, and advances
of the organization.
14.5 Request from CWL to partner with Knights on purchase of new tables
Fr RICK mentioned that it may be too early to make a decision, and
that more research and discussion should take place. There is certainly
a need for them, but there are more pressing needs within the church
at the moment.
It sounds like the CWL were hoping to acquire new tables for their
upcoming convention, but it is now too late to order and have them
arrive before then. Perhaps we will put this on hold to take time to
figure out what we need.
It was also mentioned that some of the tables could be made
respectable again, with only minor maintenance (new screws) and
some table-clothes.
14.6 Ideas to pursue from Building the Domestic Church document
The was discussed earlier during the Grand Knights report. Please keep
this in mind, and perhaps distribute it to potential brothers, or at the
back of the church.
15. New Business
15.1 Nomination of delegates for State Convention
Br GAGNON nominated Al Rossler for the Past Grand Knight position at the 2015
Knights of Columbus State Convention.
Br GAGNON nominated Gerry Gieni as an alternate for the Grand Knight position at

Gagnon as Past Grand Knight Alternate delegate for the 2015 Knights of Columbus

15.2 Rock the Mount funding request
We receive two letters from them, asking for funds for this year's event,
which takes place on August 15.

15.4 Moose Jaw Right to Life banquet and presentation (Apr 17)
Grand Knight WAGNER mentioned that council 9760 usually presents
their donation check at this event, and asked if we should be doing the
same.
Motion #24-2015 … It was moved by brother L'HEUREUX; seconded by brother
GOTTSELIG that we donate $1000 to the Moose Jaw Right to Life Banquet.
Carried
15.5 Nomination committee: Election of officers for 2015-16
Grand Knight WAGNER will build the committee, and names will be
put forward by them.
Brs DUNCAN, TIEDE, and BONAR have volunteered to join this
committee.
15.6 Call for resolutions from state
Br L'HEUREUX suggested that parental consent should be officially
endorsed by the Knights of Columbus. Perhaps this could be a
resolution.
Br GAGNON agreed, but said should not use language that is forceful.
Motion #25-2015 … It was moved by brother L'HEUREUX; seconded by brother
GERRY GIENI that our council will draft a resolution, requesting that State will
support the Parental Consent initiative. Carried
15.7 Camp Monahan
Br BONAR states that we had over $200 in the sales of shamrocks,
which was $100 more than last year.
Motion #26-2015 … It was moved by brother BONAR; seconded by brother
DUNCAN that we top up this year's shamrock sales from $212.85 to $300, and
donate it to camp Monahan. Carried
15.7 Camp Lemieux
We received a letter requesting funds, with a suggested donation of $5
per member of our council. Br DUNCAN mentioned that we do not
normally give a per capita request, as we were not part of the district
when it was implemented.
Motion #27-2015 … It was moved by brother GAGNON; seconded by brother
TIEDE that we postpone this item until the next meeting. Carried
15.8 State Convention Delegates Cost
