Through the Gate - what it means to me

Outlook helps you to
understand your choices,
consider consequences and
take responsibility for your
actions.
Future helps you to
locate and secure work,
understand and take action
to improve your employment
chances such as through
training and education.
Home helps you to get
settled accommodation
and become part of the
community. It helps with
practical things, such as
securing a tenancy and how
to pay bills.
Support encourages you to
think about the impact of
your actions on your family
and loved ones and helps
you to maintain positive
relationships.
Money helps you to manage
your personal finances,
including debt, accessing
benefits, and budgeting for
the future.
Health covers ways in
which health care can be
accessed and helps you to
look at how to stay healthy,
the importance of exercise
and diet, as well as sexual
health issues.
Habit will help you to
understand the thinking
behind your addiction and
how to introduce steps to
help you regain control.

Through the Gate what it means to me
New laws mean if you’re in prison for
one day or more, you’ll be supervised
in the community for up to 12 months
on release. This is known as ‘Through
the Gate’.
Through the Gate
Through the Gate is designed to help you
settle back into the community and give
you rehabilitation support once you’re out
so you can turn your life around.
As part of this, you’ll create a plan and
be responsible for making the changes
you need to lead a different life – one that
doesn’t involve crime.
How does it work?
Your Problem, Your Solution
We’re the Kent, Surrey and Sussex
Community Rehabilitation Company
(KSS CRC for short). Staff from our
Resettlement team, based in offices near
your prison, will visit you and assess your
rehabilitation needs.
We believe you are the best person to
find solutions to your problems, but we
will help you find them. You can be crimefree and we will support your efforts to get
there.
Together with you, we’ll agree a
resettlement plan to help you develop
new skills and change the behaviour that
led you to offending in the first place.
This plan begins during custody and
continues on your release. If your period
of imprisonment is only a few days, the
plan will focus more on what you need to
do in the community.
Kent, Surrey & Sussex Community Rehabilitation Company Ltd
Registered office: 75-77 Main Road, Hockley, Essex SS5 4RG
Company registration number: 08802556
How this happens will be in your
resettlement plan and will be based on
My Solution Rehabilitation Programme
(MSRP for short). This programme
focuses on a number of key areas that
can be a problem and are linked to
reoffending. It is designed to challenge
attitudes, develop improved behaviour
and skills needed for a crime-free life.
Once you’ve been assessed, we’ll agree
which areas to focus on.
Working with partners to help
you succeed
As part of your resettlement plan we’ll
signpost you to organisations to help you
in areas such as the following:
• housing support
• employment and training
• money management
• substance misuse and addiction
We will also make sure that support is
available for victims of domestic abuse/
sexual violence and for sex workers.
What’s expected of me?
You’ll need to take responsibility for your
own rehabilitation and understand only
you can make the changes needed to
stay clear of crime. You need to do the
following:
• follow through with actions agreed
• tell us if there are problems
• be honest with us and yourself
Doing this will give you the best chance
to turn your life around. If you don’t,
enforcement measures may be required.
