This question has dogged designers and their clients for years! While there are no definite rules about curtain and drapery length, we do have some guidelines to help you decide what is best for your fabric, your window and your room. Decisions about drapery lengths are not just a matter of personal preference; it's also about what suits the functionality of the window and the style of the room. Here are a few guidelines to help you decide the best drapery length for any given window: 1. Brushing the floor Drapery panels that just clear the floor create a clean tailored look at the window (at HomeFabrics and Rugs, we make panels 1/2" short of the floor). This is a good length for curtains that will be opened and closed frequently. It's also a great length for showing off a contrast band of fabric at the bottom of a drapery or an inset band or braid. Use tightly woven, stable fabrics for this look, such as medium-to-heavy cottons and linens, twills, ducks or light velvets. For floor length window treatments, avoid fabrics with a rep weave (horizontal rib) such as moiré and faille or open weave casements or linens. These fabrics react to humidity and sudden changes in temperature, causing them to yo-yo, or go up and down. Yes, "yo-yo" is a technical term in this industry — and it's not a fabric defect! It's a natural reaction by natural fiber fabrics. Specifying a drapery that breaks or puddles on the floor will insure that your draperies won't ever appear too short, like a man wearing high-water pants. 2. Breaking on the floor Like a trouser, draperies that break on the floor by 1” or 2" have a more relaxed, softer appearance at the window. They also have a little more play in length, in case of a fabric reaction to changes in humidity. This length of curtain or drapery is best suited to banding or trims that run down the leading edge, rather than across the hem. Most any style of fabric is suited to draperies that break the floor. 3. Puddling on the floor For those who like a little drama at the window, draperies that puddle 6” to 8" on the floor create a more formal look in a room. This voluptuous use of fabric is best suited to homes that are vacuumed regularly, without little children or pets that like to play in the window treatments. Puddled draperies are appropriate for dressier fabrics with crisp body. They look best in longer panel lengths in more formal rooms with high ceilings and crown moldings to balance out the puddling. This length of window treatment is best suited for window treatments that don't need frequent opening or closing. Flip this page over and you’ll discover a window measurement worksheet. Although not required to order your window treatments, please feel free to use this worksheet to help you understand how the measurements may affect the final product. Measuring Hints: 1. Use a metal measuring tape, not a ruler or cloth tape measure. Write your measurements in the spaces provided and double-check them! 2. Measure all windows, even if they appear to be the same size. The differences may surprise you. Note the location of each window, using multiple forms as needed. 3. With decorative rods and curtains hung by rings, start measuring from the bottom of the rings. 4. For the desired finished length, please fill in section E, F, G or H.
