ARTS AND CULTURE IN CUBA Travel. Explore. Learn. After being virtually closed off from the U.S. for more than 50 years, Cuba and its people capture our imagination. Join the University of New Mexico’s Division of Continuing Education and Latin American and Iberian Institute on a journey to Cuba where we’ll learn about the art, culture and ways of life of Cuba as we meet and interact with its citizens. During this 7-day trip, we’ll visit museums with stunning collections, meet with grassroots organizations working on literacy, environmental and agricultural initiatives, attend artists’ studios, dialogue with community members about contemporary life in Cuba, explore Habana Vieja, the oldest and most historical district of Havana and a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. We’ll rest in the evenings at the El Presidente Hotel. A four-star establishment located minutes from Habana Vieja, the hotel was built as Havana’s first skyscraper in the 1920s. ABOUT PEOPLETO-PEOPLE TRIPS In 2011, President Obama authorized people-to-people programs in Cuba, granting licensed organizations the ability to oversee educational exchanges not involving academic study pursuant to a degree program. In 2013, the UNM Latin American & Iberian Institute (LAII) became one of the few institutions of higher education in the U.S. licensed to oversee People-toPeople programs to Cuba, a privilege normally reserved for travel agencies and chambers of commerce. This license supplements the academic license that the LAII has managed for over three decades. As a result, the LAII is pleased to partner with the UNM Division of Continuing Education to oversee a series of programs which allow U.S. citizens the opportunity to travel and experience firsthand the arts and culture of Cuba.
