July 2015 From Commodore Pat Join the Board. Each year, the Board of Directors turns over. Being a Board member is a great way to become involved in your club and get the most out of your membership. The time required is minimal and you don’t have to have special skills or experience. Our By-Laws require membership in the club for two years for a Board position. If you are interested, contact me, or any board member for more information. The nominating committee will be appointed soon and the selection process will begin shortly after in late summer. So maties’, this is a good time to explore your interests. Stay Cool In The Pool. The hot, humid days of July are upon us and it seems the only way to be outside is to submerge ourselves in the club pool. If you have a group of ten or more that would like to have your gathering at poolside, please let the office know and you will be assured of poolside service instead of ringing the lounge window bell. Mitchell The House Committee Resurfacing the Club Parkway--After showing signs of aged deterioration, the parkway was sealed with a bituminous material up to the Club House. A portion of the costs was donated by a generous club member. It is expected that the life of the parkway has been extended for another 3 to 4 years. The long-range plan for the replacement of the parking lot and parkway is under study. Promoting the Club—The Lake Beresford Yacht Club has joined the DeLand Chamber of Commerce. Membership in this organization allows the DeLand community to get to know “who we are”. The Club is looking forward to participating in the community activities of this organization. One or two club members are being sought to be the contacts for the Club with the Chamber. A promotional brochure showing off the Club’s dining and lounge area for entertainment and relaxation, the marina for boat docking, morning and evening views of Lake Beresford, the pool area where cooling off can be achieved on the blistering hot days in Florida, the parties and activities provided for the Club member and the beautiful natural wilderness of the Yacht Club Property. To capture these advantages of the Club, the House Committee is requesting camera photos that the club members may have taken of the last year. Please contact the Vice Commodore about the requirements of the picture quality for the brochure. The targeted date for completion for distribution is September 1. A Reminder of the Past There are few artifacts of the Yacht Club remaining after the fire and the hurricanes of 2004 & 2005. However, a pecky cypress door attributed to the “Old Covered Boathouse” has remained and been saved from continued deterioration. It will be installed in the pool area. A plaque is planned to be placed on the door. It will describe the door’s origin and its meaning to the Club. If anyone has any knowledge about the door, please contact the Vice Commodore. Casual Summer Attire in the Dining Room As a reminder the Board of Governors has updated the dress code allowing the members and guests to wear smart dress shorts (not cut-off or ragged, and shaggy in appearance) and collared golf shirts or better while dining in the Club’s Dining Room. Since these summer months can be the most brutal, this measure would run through Labor Day 2015. The “Anything That Floats Race” The 2015 version of the Anything That Floats Race that took place on May 30 was a resounding success. Even though the crowd was not as large, the races were more exciting and the boats were some of the most creative designs seen as yet. The Commodore for the event was Blake Rambo who did a great job entertaining the spectators. The Ladies of Lake Beresford Yacht Club sold food and refreshments. Dr. Patrick Alexander started each race with a “BANG” that could be heard across the bows of the boats. A thank you should be extended to Kay Krotzer and Emily Vaughn for “manning” the membership table “under the old sugarberry tree”. The Club is looking forward to the 2016 event. Wearing the Club Proudly Members have been asking for shirts and/or light jackets displaying the LBYC logo. A local firm has developed the official logo embroidered in the Club’s colors. Please submit your shirt or jacket to the Vice Commodore for sewing. The price is $10.00 (plus FL sales tax) per each embroidered item. (There is a quantity discount available.) The expected turn-around-time is about one week. Cont. next page House Committee, cont. The Next Full Moon The July Full Moon is called the Buck Moon. Be on the lookout for the Blue Moon on Friday July 31. It rises at 4:46 pm (EDT). The Entertainment Committee has organized a Blue Moon Party for the Club members. Please see the Entertainment Committee report. ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE The American Birthday July 4th 11AM-9PM 10++ Enjoy a swim and a poolside lunch from the regular menu from 11am to mid-afternoon.
