Safety & Design Tips From the Window Covering Safety Council Parents and parents-to-be have a million things on their minds when it comes to raising their children. But every parent needs to be aware of child safety, and this begins in the home. Children's rooms are the best place to start. According to child-safety experts, one of the typical focal points for decorating a child's room -- the windows -- holds the greatest potential danger to a child's safety. To make sure your child's room is a safe one, consider the following: Window Areas: Never place a crib, playpen, bed or any type of low-standing furniture near a window. In exploring their surroundings, young children can accidentally fall through an open window or window screen, or become tragically entangled in a nearby window cord. Whenever possible, place cribs and furniture on a non-windowed wall. The Window Covering Safety Council recommends you make the right choice and only use cordless window products in young children's bedrooms and play areas. Owners and renters should replace all window coverings in the home made before 2001 with today's safer products. When it comes to choosing window treatments, most consumers consider color, style, and even privacy. If young children are around the home, then cord control should be another important factor in selecting your window treatments. Motorized Window Treatments The vision of one man and a dream that he never saw himself doing. With the vision of owning his own cabinet building and finishing shop, Matthew T. Kandl graduated from DePaul University with a degree in Marketing and a degree in Communications. After starting and successfully running his own home renovation business for five years, Matthew wanted to change his work hours and career direction to focus on using his marketing degree more than his brawn and labor skills. So, he slowly closed the doors of his business and went to work for a window treatment company. Then in 2004, Matthew began working for an independent Hunter Douglas window treatment fabricator. He started off managing the Measure and Installation department, then the Customer Service department. He then became the company's Training and Education Manager, helping to introduce and sell new Hunter Douglas window treatments to dealers and designers across the Midwest. "Becoming the Training and Eduction Manager was the best thing that could have ever happened to me!" - Matthew T. Kandl This training and education position gave Matthew the ability to see and train designers on the latest Hunter Douglas products. This included the motorization and integration of Hunter Douglas window treatments into various home automation "Smart Home" systems. With this training, Matthew left Hunter Douglas to work for an independent window treatment company as their resident motorization expert. There he honed his motorization skills and became versed in multiple brands of window treatments. Recognized by Somfy as an expert in the motor industry, he submersed himself in finding the best ways to work with integrators and integrate window treatments in with all sorts of "Home Automation Systems." He then began to measure and install most of the manual and motorized treatments he sold before branching off on his own in 2009. Now, with his future still being written, Matthew's goal for Motorized Window Treatments (MWT) is to find any and every way to make life easier for his clients. For example, if a parent is worried about cords injuring their child, he wants to remove all cords to bring them peace of mind. If a disabled or elderly person wants to gain their independence back and feel safer in their home, he wants to help. If a designer is worried about making a mistake when measuring or installing or wants assistance with a motorized project, he wants to help.
