Business and Civic Leaders Agree
As Louisiana employers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, we are invested in the future of this state. That means
we are equally invested in the future of Louisiana’s higher education system. It is the foundation for economic development,
innovation, research and technology transfer, workforce growth at all levels through education, and ultimately, a healthier and
stronger Louisiana.
LSU’s many campuses – those with classrooms and labs, as well as those with specialized agricultural, medical, and
biomedical research missions – have sustained heavy losses over the last few years. And when faced with an additional $608
million potential budget cut at the beginning of the 2015 session, leaders rose from within the legislative ranks to say enough
is enough and announced their commitment to protecting higher education.
They are working to fulfill that promise by identifying solutions and making difficult votes. So far, the House of
Representatives has approved a budget that protects Louisiana’s two- and four-year colleges and universities. For that, we
cannot commend them enough. Difficulties still remain in the form of several funding gaps for our health science and research
centers related to hospital transition costs and long-term sustainability. The budget now sits with the Senate, and we hope
leaders there will continue their previously stated prioritization of higher education by returning bills to the House with the
funding necessary to fill those gaps.
This continues to be a challenging session, but history has proven that the darkest days often produce the strongest
leaders. We stand behind those legislative leaders and support their continued efforts toward prioritizing LSU and higher
education in Louisiana.
