On Tuesday May 12th students from Lara Secondary College
attended the annual Wynspeak Competition run by the
Rotary Club. Ethan W and Tate E faced some impressive
competition in the senior division and performed admirably.
The first round involved speaking to a topic of their choice
and Ethan’s speech on global warming was very informative.
Tate chose to talk about the Federal Government’s June
budget and its impact on society and was very engaging.
The second round was impromptu and the boys received a
random topic four minutes before having to address the
crowd. Once again both boys spoke impressively, particularly
in the face of such pressure.
A big congratulations to both boys who showed
determination, initiative and bravery; public speaking is no
easy feat. We encourage students looking to extend
themselves and build confidence to seek out this opportunity
next year or sign up for debating later this term.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
College Annual Report
Our Annual Report for 2014 reflects the ongoing development
and strength of our work and is now available on the College
Website. The report outlines our achievements in a new format
with the inclusion of four sections: Student Achievement,
Student Engagement, Student Wellbeing and Productivity. If
you would like a hard copy of the report please don’t hesitate
in contacting our office.
Attitudes to School internal data
Our ATS survey data has been collated and overall is extremely
positive, reflecting above state average results. The leadership
team are currently analysing the data. This information, along
with focus groups led by the program leaders and a principal
team member, will result in the formation of action plans to
address areas in need of improvement – and of course to
celebrate our wide range of successes.

School Improvement Team professional learning day : Student
Free June 18th
The work we have undertaken with Insight SRC “coaching for
leadership teams” will culminate in a day of exploration of how
our school can work, even more collaboratively and
successfully, through the work of our staff nominate, School
Improvement Team. This group of enthusiastic staff have
worked with our external educational consultant/psychologist
Roger Dingle, to enable staff to determine their focus for the
“ideal school” and the means by which we can continue our
work, to continually review our work and processes to ensure
the very best outcomes for our students.

Parent discussion groups
It is important to ensure that we have parent input into our
school operations, not only through the formality of the work
of our College Council parent representatives but through a
more casual forum. I would like to invite parents who are
interested in meeting with me to chat about our school and
ongoing improvements to contact me via email. There are
currently two options for joining in for coffee and a chat
9.30am on Wednesday June 10th or 2.00pm on June 15th.
Please take this opportunity to meet with me to share your
thoughts on what we are doing well and areas in which you
believe we could be more supportive, of your child’s learning.
ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT
Already we are in the second half of Term 2 and quickly heading
towards the end of the Semester. Semester One terminates at
the end of Week 9, Friday June 12th. This is at the end of Exam
Week for all Year 9 to 11 students. Semester Two commences
for all students on Monday June 11th.
Transition : Improved Literacy and Numeracy Outcomes project
Reporting
Lara Secondary, Lara Primary, Lara Lake and Little River
Primary schools were recently invited to be a part of a state
wide research project to determine best practice in transition
of students from Years 6 – 7. Our selection with 5 other
clusters in the state was a result of the work we have already
undertaken as a cluster in coordinating teacher visits both to
the primary and the secondary school, extra curricular
programs we offer to primary schools and our collaboration via
connections, drama sport and SRC. This is a very positive
reflection on the work of the Lara Schools and an exciting
opportunity allowing us to work closely and in a structured
manner, to further the development of a strong transition
program, for the students in our community. This week we
held a cluster meeting with our new cluster leader, John
Hassett, with 17 representatives from the 4 schools.
You will receive your child’s Cycle Three progress report early in
the last week of term, then the End of Semester Report on the
final day of Term 2. Both of these reports will be available
through your Compass Parent Login. Remember that end of
Semester Reports will include descriptions of the content
covered in each subject for the semester, Grades that students
have achieved on Assessment Tasks and Exams, AusVELS levels
(for Year 7 to 10), Outcome results for Year 11 and 12 and Unit
Results for Year 10 to 12, but there will be no teacher
comments. Parents are encouraged to provide feedback on the
new reporting system by emailing Tania O’Callaghan or Faye
Smith at any stage. More formal avenues for parent feedback
will also be established.

Student Leadership
Student Leaders are busy organising events for later this term.
The House Captains and Vice Captains are working with the
House Leaders to create a Family Feud House Competition. This
will run over the last two weeks of term, and will involve teams
from each house at various year levels, competing at
lunchtimes. The School Captains and Student Leaders are
organising a special day on June 18th to celebrate Cultural
Diversity at Lara Secondary College. Year 7 and 8 students will
be involved in a range of multi-cultural activities, and students
are producing a film to highlight and celebrate diversity in our
school. There will be an assembly on this day with a range of
performances.
Learning Support and Extension
As part of our commitment to successful learning outcomes of
all students at Lara SC, we have recently implemented an
Intervention Team. Teachers are able to refer students to the
team, should they not be displaying progress in their schooling,
despite the best efforts of the child’s teachers and immediate
support team. This team takes a holistic approach at looking at
each case, drawing all information together and creating a plan
that will best meet the needs of each student. Parents will be
informed of the plans to be put in place and will meet regularly
to reflect with teachers and support staff on the success of the
interventions put in place. Our journey to providing a positive
and successful learning environment for all students is a very
challenging one that will require high levels of collaboration
between teachers and with parents. We know that developing
the culture of our school so that failure for students in not an
option will take time and effort, but the rewards are significant
for all involved.
On Wednesday, Smiling Mind came to Lara Secondary to talk to
Year 7 and 8 students about the Smiling Mind Research Project
and the importance of practising mindfulness. Bianca Chatfield,
Captain of the Melbourne Vixens, came as an ambassador of
Smiling Mind and shared what mindfulness has done for her.
Students enjoyed hearing from a Commonwealth Games gold
medallist and practising mindfulness!
For more information on Smiling Mind mindfulness please feel
free to contact School Counsellor Ellie Prior, or go to their
website at www.smilingmind.com.au.

We are also looking to support learners who are showing that
they can perform at levels beyond their current year level.
Extension programs for Year 7 and 8 students in both English
and Maths are being established and offered to some students.
This will add to the extension being offered by teachers in
individual classes.

Student Achievements
Planning to Save Lives
The inaugural Linking with Ambulance Victoria program was
a huge hit. Tate, Year 10, was one of the lucky students who
was offered a place in the week long program. Students were
advised about a range of job roles as well as paramedics, and
also learnt about leadership, teamwork, appropriate risk
taking, communication, and health promotion.
Tate’s Report
On the 27/4/ 15 myself and 13 other students from
completely different schools came together to see what it
was like at a branch.
Fourteen people with not much in common became great
friends learning skills, especially how to use an Automated
External Defibrillator correctly. At the end we taught Grade
5&6 from Clairvaux PS the 4 Steps for Life Plus Program we
had learnt. I would recommend this program to everyone.
Thank you Kate, Scott, Jake, Marie and the paramedics who
taught us, and finally everyone else I’m glad I met.

JOURNALISM AT LA TROBE – Journalism can be studied at
most universities, however, at a recent conference, Career
Practitioners were told about journalism at La Trobe
University. It was pointed out that there are still jobs in
journalism, but not in traditional media. However, there
are more TV channels, more radio stations seeking staff. It
was pointed out that the first job in
journalism is often easier to obtain than
the second or subsequent position, as
promotion can be difficult. Graduates
often start as a digital content producer.
Journalism skills can be used in arrange
of jobs because journalists learn to
synthesize, present, package and process information.
Why study at La Trobe? Journalism there has a broad
approach, transferrable skills are taught, all senior staff
work in the industry, and there are great industry links.
Attempts have been made to create real-world assessment
tasks such as attending press conferences and writing
reports; there is a genuine student focus, aspiration is
fostered, and efforts have been made to see that all
assessments don’t came at the same time.
