MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
CELEBRATING STUDENT SUCCESS
Congratulations to our Year 10 People and Places central
studies class for their outstanding leadership and organisation
of the Anzac day centenary commemoration which was held
on Friday. The whole school assembly was attended by a 14
members of the Lara RSL and two representatives from
Tuckers Funeral services. All were highly impressed with the
presentation by students and the manner if which all of our
students conducted themselves on this most significant
occasion.
Further congratulations to our newly elected Year 7 leaders ,
Blayze 7D and Jade also of 7D. Blayze and Jade have already
joined in with the work of the Student Representative Council.
The work of the SRC is extremely important and a means by
which all students can have a voice and impact on student
engagement and school improvement. We look forward to an
upcoming culture day which is currently one aspect of the work
being undertaken by the SRC.

Uniform
Adhering to uniform expectations is an important part of
presenting to the community the high standards of Lara Secondary
College as well as fostering a sense of community within the
school. Please ensure, with the change to our winter uniform, that
students are in correct clothing. Socks are to be plain with no
slogans or branding, and can be either black or white in colour.
Girls wearing their kilts need to also be wearing either black or navy
tights that are 60 denier. It is very important students also have the
correct footwear. Staff will be following up on students who are
repeatedly wearing incorrect items of clothing.
Immunisations
Next Tuesday, 5th May, students in Year 7 & 10 will be receiving
their Diptheria, Tetanus and Pertussis immunisation. Year 7
students will also be immunised against Human Papillomavirus
(HPV).
NAPLAN
From Tuesday 12th May to Thursday 14th May students in Years 7
and 9 will be completing their NAPLAN assessments. These tests
assess each student’s skills in Writing, Reading, Language
Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.
These results form part of our collation of data which helps us to
monitor the learning growth of each student and reflect on our
teaching and learning process to ensure we are optimising the
opportunities of every student.
On Friday the 24th of April, John and I attended the Geelong and
District Schools’ Anzac Commemoration Ceremony at the
Peace Memorial in Johnstone
Park. Special guests began the
ceremony with earnest words,
which honoured the legacy of the
ANZACs. This was followed by the
presentation of wreaths, where
each of the students represented
their school by offering a wreath
in respect and remembrance of
the soldiers who fought for our
country. A moment of silence,
the playing of the Last Post, a
prayer, the National Anthem and
the raising of the flag concluded the ceremony. Afterwards,
everyone got the opportunity to admire the wreath display in
the centre of the memorial and the Mayor also presented a
speech during lunch in the City Hall.

ANZAC DAY ASSEMBLY
On Friday the 24th of April, Lara Secondary College held a very
special ANZAC assembly, to commemorate 100 years since our
troops landed at Gallipoli and went
to fight for our country. Our
student Cadets created the
atmosphere of the assembly by
making an official entrance led by
Ashleigh Mc. Congratulations to
the other cadets Avril-Lee B,
Cameron B, Abbey S and Chloe Y who were very professional on
the day. We had special guests such as Bruce, Ken and other
members from our local Lara RSL, representatives from Tuckers
Funeral Home who presented our school with a flag, and parents
in attendance. At the assembly, we had Mr McInnes play an
amazing and very moving version of ‘And The Band Played
Waltzing Matilda’. Bruce Challoner from the RSL spoke to our
school and kindly donated a gift of an ANZAC picture for all Lara
Secondary College has done for the RSL. This picture can be viewed
in the main entrance of our school office. Christine and I ran the
assembly, which was a huge honour on such a special day. After
the assembly ended, our special guests were invited to have some
scones, coffee and tea, hosted by our Year 10 People and Places
class. Well done the People and Places class for their organisation
of such a moving assembly.

The Lara Dawn Service
It was the first ever dawn service held at the Lara RSL. As you
walked into the service there were 16 crosses laid out in
the rose garden, for the men and women from the Lara district that died during the First World War.
The service was to start at 6am and even with the rain trying
to break through it didn’t stop us from proceeding with the
service.
First Ken Simons, the RSL president, spoke about the ANZACS and their stories, then he passed it on to John Snow, he
then lead the Lord’s Prayer.
LSC’s Ms Newman sang the song ‘They call him the ANZAC’. After that Mr Simons welcomed LSC students Teagan
S, Tate E and Lachlan J to the microphone to read some letters that were written by the soldiers and sent home to their
loved ones. Two were sent from a hospital ship while the
soldiers were off from the front line. The other one was from
a soldier, written at the front line, in the trenches, during the
Gallipoli campaign. Mr Simons then thanked the Lara students for helping out and proceeded to speak and called
up a member of the RSL to play a song on the bagpipes.
Then Mr Snow returned to the stage, this time to say the
Ode of Remembrance. We then had select people place
wreaths in honour of the ANZACS and their sacrifices, then
to finish off the moving ceremony the Last Post was played
followed by the one minute of silence.
It was a privilege to be part of the ceremony, honouring the
ANZACS. We were proud to know that we got to represent
our school at the 100th Anniversary Dawn Service

BACHELOR 0F SCIENCE/BACHELOR OR MUSIC – At
Monash University you can now combine your passion for
music with a solid foundation in the sciences with this new
double degree. There is a wonderful synergy between the
passion for creating music and a love of scientific
knowledge. Choosing between the two can be difficult, so
why not consider making the most of your talents and
study both music and science in a double degree. Physics,
maths and music are related to the art and science of
acoustics; however their links are much more extensive.
The latest developments in physics, psychology, human
biology, materials science, information science and
statistical analysis all give us new answers to ancient
questions about music – what it is, why we make it, how
we make it, why we listen to it and how it is changing.
Research into the possibilities of music is ongoing, creating new
jobs dedicated to the many effects of music, music
perception and the performance and technical
underpinnings of instruments. Alternatively, you could
combine your knowledge of physics, mathematics and
computing to become a sound engineer.
