Description:
The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, cultural patrimony of our country, is a non-profit organization accredited
by the American Alliance of Museums. The MAPR mission is to enrich the lives of its diverse audiences by
making and promoting the knowledge, appreciation, and enjoyment of the visual arts, of Puerto Rico and the
world.
“Interconnections: Curatorial readings of the MAPR collection” aims to display the permanent collection in a
new way, following current curatorial criteria. It is not a chronological view, nor does it attempt to offer a
univocal interpretation of the history of Puerto Rican arts. “Interconnections” is a thematic exhibition, or
better said, an exhibition with many themes. Its thematic route will allow our visitors to witness the birth and
development of that icon of painting on the island, the plantain; to discover how José Campeche’s religious
paintings influence portrait painting; to follow the reaction of Puerto Rican painting to the academic art of
Europe; to analyze artists’ portraits and self-portraits through time; to contrast the production of four graphic
workshops; to detect similarities in past and present printmaking; to compare contrasting trends in local
painting; to observe Puerto Rican cultural syncretism in modern and contemporary art; to relate the island’s
folkloric imaginaries to the urban imaginaries of Puerto Ricans in New York; to recognize the body metaphors
present in some works; to examine an aspect of conceptual art as collective creation; to find underlying
figurative patterns in pictorial abstraction; to see a master work with new eyes; to consider contemporary
interpretations of transitoriness; to explore the influence of technology in video art; to understand current
interpretations of travel and distance.
The achievement of the highest museologic and muesographic standards established by the American Alliance
of Museums has given the MAPR the distinction of being selected in 2001 as a Smithsonian Institution affiliate.
