Commencement 2015 The 44th COMMENCEMENT OF LARAMIE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE May sixteenth, two thousand fifteen at ten o’clock in the morning Storey Gymnasium Cheyenne, Wyoming TM Before We Part Words and Music by Deen E. Entsminger Between the now and then, where memories are born, I will find you and hold on to the joy in a promise we have sworn. Though time may seem to end, and distant voices call, In our journey may we both see that love is the greatest gift of all. Let’s say a prayer before we part, that we may always be friends at heart, A little prayer to bless the day, to give us courage along our way; No matter where our path may lead, our friendships will be true. Remember me my friend, as I will think on you, and tomorrow feel no sorrow And pray that our promise may come true. Let’s say a prayer before we part, that we may always be friends at heart, A little prayer to bless the day, to give us courage along our way; No matter where our path may lead, our friendships will be true. As we honor our graduates’ achievements, we respectfully request your cooperation. Please refrain from casual conversation during the ceremony and turn your cellular phones to the silent mode. Please remain seated and keep the aisles clear and safe during the processionals and throughout the ceremony as requested by the ushers. Thank you. Graduation photography provided by Lifetouch Photography. Graduates will be contacted after the ceremony with information on purchasing stage photos. In those times, and for hundreds of years thereafter, the heavy gowns and hoods were worn daily and served a very practical purpose; they protected scholars, cloistered in stone buildings, from the severe cold of European winters. Today, only a few European and American universities require students and faculty to wear such formal attire, except at important academic ceremonies such as commencement exercises. In 1894, American colleges, following Col. John James McCook of Princeton, founded the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume, which is located today in Albany, New York. Since that time, this organization has maintained and updated the original code that provided a standardization of color and design indicating the rank and authority of those in the educational world. With a few exceptions, faculty robes are black. The bachelor’s robe is worn closed in front; it has long, pointed sleeves. The master’s robe may be worn open or closed; its long sleeves are sewn closed with a slit near the elbow to free the hand and the forearm. The doctorate’s gown is also worn open or closed. Additionally, it has velvet panels that run down the front and three horizontal velvet bars on each sleeve. The original woolen gowns have given way to modern, light, synthetic fabrics because most graduations occur during warm weather. The square Oxford cap is worn for most degrees, with a black tassel (worn on the left side) for bachelors and masters and gold for doctorates. Some colleges use a smaller, square, soft velvet cap for added distinction. The hoods are most symbolic. For a degree in the arts, the border is white; for the sciences, the border is yellow. The lining of the hood is silk and is the color of the institution conferring the degree. Why do we wear caps, gowns and hoods today at Laramie County Com munity College? They draw together all of the unique individuals at our institution and all the separate educational disciplines, and for a brief, solemn moment we become one in a public representation of the unity of our college life. Yet we preserve our individuality through the different colors of our hoods—colors that indicate the kind of degree we have earned and the institution that awarded us our degree. 2 COLOR KEY FOR ACADEMIC HOODS Agriculture....................................................................................................... Students are involved in activities that address local, community-identified needs while developing their academic skills and commitment to their community. Faculty who have embraced this teaching strategy are honored by wearing the crimson stole with white lettering embroidered with the service learning logo and the Laramie County Community College logo. 3 THE MACE The mace, a great and splendid staff, is actually a club; it is a symbolic weapon. Medieval universities would not defend themselves with the sword. It was not considered appropriate for gentle scholars to draw blood, but they could defend, using a cudgel—and they did. The mace has come to stand as a symbol for two critical matters. First, it stands for the freedom to seek the truth and to teach it. It also stands for the authority of the college. This authority is best described by two traditional Latin terms: magisterium and auctoritas. Under the first term, magisterium, is included control of equipment, building and grounds, as well as the behavior of members and visitors — ensuring order and liberty. Under the second term, auctoritas, is included a defense of the liberty to do research, to study, to publish and to learn. The mace makes the statement that Laramie County Community College must protect and foster these educational values and ideals. Efforts to create the mace for LCCC were initiated in 1993 by the Associated Student Government in cooperation with Dr. Charles H. Bohlen, LCCC’s sixth president. Funding for the mace was made possible by Dr. Bohlen and the Student Fee Allocation Committee. The late Barry D. Pendley was commissioned to design and create the mace for the college. A golden eagle rests on top of a silver-plated metal sphere, which is surrounded by a gold metal band with the college’s initials pierced through it. The mace is attached to a slightly tapered oak staff. The oak stand that holds the mace was designed and created by the late Jim Albertson. The mace was first used at commencement in May 1994 and continues to be an important college tradition. The most senior faculty member carries the mace at the beginning and end of the commencement ceremony. Roz Schliske began her service to Laramie County Community College in 1976. 4 DESCRIPTION OF DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES AWARDED Associate of Arts Degree and Associate of Science Degree These degrees are designed for students who anticipate transferring to a four-year college or university and for individuals who are interested in a general nontransfer education. Associate of Applied Science Degree This degree is designed to prepare the student for immediate employment in a skilled or paraprofessional occupation or to upgrade and stabilize current employment. Certificates of Completion The certificate is designed for occupational programs that do not lead to an associate degree. The programs are one year or less in duration and prepare the student for immediate entry-level employment. 5 DESCRIPTIONS OF HONORS Many students receiving associate degrees will do so with the added designation of Distinction or High Distinction. Students wearing gold cords are graduating with High Distinction and earned a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher (on a 4.0 scale). Students wearing silver cords are graduating with Distinction and earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 to 3.74. A minimum accumulation of 64 semester credits is required to establish honors. Veterans are wearing red, white, and blue honor cords as recognition for their service to our country. LCCC HONOR SOCIETY Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of the two-year college, is an internationally acclaimed honor society serving institutions that offer associate degree programs. Phi Theta Kappa recognizes and encourages scholarship, leadership, fellowship and service among its members. Phi Theta Kappa was established more than 75 years ago, and the Alpha Omega Zeta chapter at Laramie County Community College was started in 1994. Graduates enrolled in Phi Theta Kappa wear gold honor stoles during this evening’s ceremony. The blue on the stole signifies scholarship, and the gold signifies purity. RADIOGRAPHY/SONOGRAPHY HONOR SOCIETY Lambda Nu is a national honor society for the radiologic and imaging sci ences. The LCCC chapter has the honor of being Wyoming’s first chapter of Lambda Nu and is therefore named the Wyoming Alpha Chapter of Lambda Nu. To be eligible for induction, a student must be enrolled in a radiologic or imaging sciences program as a full-time student for at least one term, have earned a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in the didactic professional curriculum, and have demonstrated professional commitment beyond the program’s minimum requirements. Radiography and sonography graduates inducted into Lambda Nu have earned the privilege to wear forest green and maroon cords and tassels or the gold honor stoles with the Lambda Nu insignia embroidered on them during this evening’s ceremony. Maroon represents the radiologic sciences, and green represents the health professions. 6 ACTIVE MINDS Active Minds is the only organization working to utilize the student voice to change the conversation about mental health on college campuses. With chapters throughout North America, Active Minds works to increase students’ awareness of mental health issues, provide information and resources regarding mental health and mental illness, encourage students to seek help as soon as it is needed, and serve as liaison between students and the mental health community. Active Minds at Laramie County Community College was established by students in 2009 as a service learning project. Graduates wear blue and green cords signifying membership in this organization. STALCUP GRADUATE EXCELLENCE AWARD The award is presented to a graduate who has made a significant commitment of service to the college and to the community of Cheyenne, as well as excelling in his or her academic or career pursuits. We are proud to present the Stalcup Graduate Excellence Award to William Dalles. He is wearing the award medallion in today’s commencement ceremony. 7 School of Arts & Humanities Bashiratu I.
