GENERAL INFORMATION
The United Nations Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination
and Wider Appreciation of International Law was established by General Assembly
resolution 2099 (XX) of 20 December 1965 to contribute towards a better knowledge
of international law as a means of strengthening international peace and security and
promoting friendly relations and cooperation among States. The Codification Division
of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs conducts international law training courses
under the Programme of Assistance.
The Codification Division is organizing the International Law Seminar for Arab States
in cooperation with the Government of Egypt and the League of Arab States.
OBJECTIVES
The International Law Seminar for Arab States will provide high-quality training by
leading international law scholars and practitioners on various subjects of international
law that are of particular interest to the countries concerned. In addition, the
interactive nature of the training will allow the participants to share experiences and
exchange ideas, which promotes greater understanding and cooperation on legal
matters. The International Law Seminar for Arab States will constitute an important
contribution to the furtherance of United Nations rule of law programmes and activities.
The International Law Seminar for Arab States is intended to enable qualified
professionals, namely government officials and lawyers working with the League of
Arab States, to deepen their knowledge of international law.
COURSE CONTENT
The International Law Seminar for Arab States will consist of seminars given by
eminent scholars and practitioners in international law from different regions and legal
systems. The curriculum will include seminars on the following subjects:
Introduction to International Law, The Importance of International Law for Arab
States, Self-determination in International Law, International Human Rights Law,
International Humanitarian Law and International Criminal Law.
METHODOLOGY AND TRAINING MATERIAL
The International Law Seminar for Arab States will be conducted in the form of
interactive seminars and discussions to allow a maximum exchange of views. A
comprehensive set of training materials will be provided for each participant at the
beginning of the training course. Certificates are awarded to those participants who
have completed the training course in its entirety.
PARTICIPATION/QUALIFICATIONS OF APPLICANTS
To qualify for the International Law Seminar for Arab States, candidates should be
between 24 and 45 years of age at the beginning of the training course. They must
have a legal background with professional experience in the field of international law.
The International Law Seminar for Arab States will accommodate up to 35 participants.
The International Law Seminar for Arab States is open to government lawyers from
Member States that are also members of the League of Arab States, and the Nonmember Observer State of Palestine. Lawyers working with the League of Arab States
may also submit applications for this training course.
SELECTION PROCESS
When selecting participants for the International Law Seminar for Arab States, due
consideration will be given to the candidates' qualifications, to the scope of their
professional duties, to the relevance of the training to their professional duties and
gender balance. Applications from qualified female candidates are encouraged.
Preference will be given to those candidates who are already present in Cairo.
Participants, whether based in Cairo, or requiring travel to the location, will bear all
costs associated with their participation. Training materials and lunches during the
Seminar will be provided to all participants.
VENUE AND COURSE LANGUAGE
The International Law Seminar for Arab States will be held at the Institute for
Diplomatic Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Cairo, from 15 to 19 November
2015. It will be conducted in English. Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
